Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of the Man Paul These studies have for their subject the character of Paul, not so much his life or work or thought as the man. Of course it is only by his life and work and thought that the character of the man is revealed. But the aim of this little book is to study as far as possible the man himself, the personality of Paul. In some measure certainly what he did shaped and moulded him. In truer sense what he was determined and explained what he did. The various chapters are divided into sections and numbered divisions for the convenience of Bible classes. They were prepared for Bible students, and have appeared in part, in the Record of Christian Work for the use of a mid-week Bible class. The simple name Paul, rather than Saint Paul, is used in conformity with the invariable usage of both the Authorized and the Revised Versions. The references throughout are to the Revised Version. Almost the whole of F. W. H. Myers' Saint Paul has been quoted in these studies. I wish that every one who reads this book might possess and study that exquisite poem. These simple studies are sympathetic, not critical. Their purpose is wholly practical, and they pass by in the main the questions with which criticism is concerning itself. Even in such practical studies, however, it is impossible to avoid statements which involve judgments of one sort or another on these questions. Yet the whole purpose has been to set in the foreground Paul himself and not any secondary interests, and in some richer and fuller way to understand him. In a sense, such a study is disappointing after a study of the character of Christ in the Gospels. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of Paul and His Gospel These Studies have appeared in the pages of The Expositor, and are reprinted with the kind per mission of the Editor. The intention is not to give an exhaustive or systematic account of Paul's theology, but to present the man and his message as distinctly as the writer himself has been im pressed by them. In one oi the Century Bible Handbooks, published by Messrs. T. C. E. C. Jack, the writer has already dealt with The Life and Teaching of Paul; but necessarily in the briefest possible way. In this volume he attempts to discuss in greater detail, with more constant reference to modern difficulties, the main features of Paul's Gospel. While not unacquainted with what scholars have written on the theme, he has not thought it necessary or desirable to confuse the reader by the reproduction of a mass of con flicting Opinion; but having gone to the sources. Book excerpt: NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS Bible Studies In The Life Of Paul: Historical And Constructive This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paul the Man, the Missionary, and the Teacher Ince the beginning of serious biblical study a pro found interest has been felt in the personality, life, and teachings of the great apostle to the gentiles. This interest is not confined to Bible-students, but has extended to the large number of persons who are attracted by the history of civilisation and of liberty and by the study of the causes which have effected the enfranchisement and progress of human thought. Its highest degree and its widest extent are amply justified both by the wonderful character and genius of the man and by the epoch-making force of his thinking and his religious insight. It is not to be put to his credit that he emancipated Christianity from Judaism. To have separated it from what is best in the Jewish religion and ethics would have been to render it a great disservice. That he liberated it from bondage to externalities and formalism, and gave it to mankind not only as a doctrine, but also as a power of the Spirit and as an ethical life, is his indefeasible merit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paul's Joy in Christ: Studies in Philippians These lectures were first prepared as expository talks from the Greek text for the Northfield Conference for Christian workers in August, 1913. They were delivered in Sage Chapel and their publication was requested by the hearers. The addresses have since been repeated at Winona Lake, Indiana, Columbus, Ohio, Virginia Beach, Moody Bible Institute, and to various other assemblies and churches. The Greek text is kept in foot-notes so that the average man can read the book with comfort without a knowledge of Greek. The volume is essentially popular in style and purpose, while the latest researches of modern scholarship are utilized for the illustration of this noble Epistle. Nowhere is the tender side of Paul's nature better shown than here, his delicacy, his courtesy, his elevation of feeling, his independence, his mysticism, his spiritual passion. My book is not so much a technical commentary, though it covers all the Epistle, as an interpretation adapted to modern needs on the part of all teachers, preachers and students of the New Testament. Nowhere does Paul have more "charm," to use Ramsay's phrase, than in Philippians. Nowhere is he more vital and more powerful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Many-Sided Paul: A Study of the Character of the Great Apostle as Unfolded in the Acts and the Pauline Epistles I deem it unnecessary to justify myself for adding another to the almost endless list of essays-upon this noble subject. It is one of the best evidences Of the divine source of the apos tle's power and grandeur of spiritual stature that the world never tires of our theme. The study of St. Paul is like the study of life itself, - so long as men recognize as features of human thought and character the struggle with guilt and sin, and the aspiration after holiness and God and a blessed immortality, so long will the Christian consciousness gladly welcome new trib utes to the wondrous personality of this slave Of Christ; so long will the last word concern ing him yet remain unsaid. I am not unfamiliar with many of the radical and unsympathetic treatises on the general sub ject that have appeared in English and German during the past three decades; but I do not deem it necessary here to name even a partial list of them. A good bibliography of the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Life of Paul: For Bible Classes and Private Use These outlines are mainly the notes on "The Life of Paul" as they appear in the author's note-book. They were not written for publication, and are only permitted to see the light now in response to a general demand by college students for a course which has proved itself adapted to the needs of a college community. This course was taught by the author, assisted by Mr. William Sloane, to the senior class at Yale University, as part of the work offered by the Young Men's Christian Association, in 1894- 95, and at the same time to a class of business and professional men at Bridgeport, Conn., under auspices of the Association. It was presented in a modified form at the College Students' Conferences at Northfield, Mass., and Knoxville, Tenn., in 1895, and by request of the College Committee repeated at Northfield in 1896. It was also given before the Conference of Young Women's Christian Associations at Northfield, in 1896. The note-book of Mr. Anson Phelps Stokes, Jr., who taught it to the senior class at Yale in 1895-96, has been freely consulted. The course has been adopted as part of the Yale Association's system of permanent and progressive Bible study. Its object is to study the character of Paul rather than his work - to emphasize what he was more than what he did. Paul: In the Light of Modern Research This is a companion volume to the Old Testament and Gospels in the Light of Modern Research, but it runs on other lines. Perhaps I should strictly have called this book 'S. Paul in the light of Modern Thought.' In my previous works I dealt mainly with the present attitude of the Higher Criticism towards the origin, composition and historical trustworthiness of the books of Holy Scripture. The scope of this work is different. Every topic is still approached from a severely critical standpoint in the full light of recent research, but the main theme is Paul's own message, not questions of literary criticism, although these are at times unavoidable. My one wish and aim is to bring the mind of Paul and the modern mind into vital relation with each other, and, if possible, to help readers to understand and love the Paul whom I my self so deeply love and revere. Every day convinces me more and more that Paul is the Apostle of the present, still more of the future, and that - with a few important reservations - his solution of the deep problems of life is abreast of the best modern religious thought, often ahead of it. In the words of Matthew Arnold: 'Paul's reign has only begun, and his fundamental ideas, disengaged from the elaborate misconceptions with which ecclesiasticism has overlaid them, will have an influence in the future greater than any which they have yet had.' For us to-day, Paul is essentially the Apostle of Christ, His best interpreter, and it is through Paul, if at all, that we are to get 'back to Christ.' In our Bibles, Paul's gospel comes after the other four; but, in point of time and intrinsic value, it is avowedly the first. A true instinct prompted the Church to add the words, 'the Apostle, ' to the title of his Epistles and to no others. The skeleton-framework of this book is simple. Part I. opens with an appreciation of Paul's true place and influence in the history of Christianity. Several chapters are next devoted to a psychological review of Paul's early life and conversion. This is the key to the man and his work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
