Book excerpt: In 1946, Richard Ogg carried out experiments that appear to provide evidence that sodium-ammonia solutions rapidly frozen in liquid oxygen are superconducting up to ~ 180 Kelvins for sodium concentrations on the order of 3 mole percent metal (MPM). The reason for the rapid cooling is that it would otherwise phase separate into a low-MPM phase and a high-MPM phase, neither of which is superconducting. Many tried to reproduce Ogg's results, but only a few succeeded. It is still an open question whether sodium-ammonia solution is superconducting at such high temperatures. We hope to avoid macroscopic phase separation by confining the solution in porous glass. We report on attempts to imbibe sodium-ammonia solution in porous glass as well as electrical resistance measurements.

The properties of of chalcogenide glasses and non-silicate oxide glasses are also discussed. The next chapters focus on the viscosity of molten glass; the electrolytic conductivity of silicates; the specific volumina of glass melts; and specific applications of infrared spectroscopy to solving structure problems. The physical properties of glass, varied by thermal actions in the transformation and annealing ranges, are considered as well. The final chapter is devoted to miscellaneous additional constitution problems, with particular reference to the volatilization of lead silicate glasses from glass melts and vitreous semiconductors of chalcogenide glasses. This book will be of interest to mineralogists and crystallographers.

About 220 participants from 25 countries enjoyed a very successful meeting with 32 lectures and 155 poster presentations. The Symposium started with a highly stimulating lecture by Sir John Meurig Thomas, Cambridge, highlighting the recent developments in engineering of new catalysts. The following two full sessions were devoted to theory, modelling and simulation which provide the basis for the interpretation of pore structural data of adsorbents and finely dispersed solids. Sessions 2 and 3 focused on the advances in the synthesis and characterisation of highly ordered inorganic adsorbents and carbons. Sessions 4 and 5 addressed important questions with respect to the characterisation of porous solids by sorption measurement and other related techniques. The intensive three-day programme provided a stimulating forum for the exchange of novel research findings, concepts, techniques and materials which are collected in this volume.
