In his reaction against Schleiermacher and the Romantic School, Hegel ignores the great import ance of feeling in the religious consciousness. If the feeling of dependence were the essence of religion, then, he remarks scornfully, the dog would be the most religious of creatures. The animal, we are told, feels, but it is the characteristic of man to think. True, but man also feels, and he does not feel as the animal feels. It is safe to say that if man were a purely thinking being, he would not be the religious being that experience shows him to be. Occupying the standpoint of an all-embracing idealism, Hegel gives no adequate psychological analysis of the religious consciousness. He does not treat of faith in its specific character; and though he indicates the dialectic movement by which feeling passes into representation, he fails to recognise how essential the interplay of sentiment, emotion, and idea is in the maturest spiritual experience. Man at first interprets the phenomena which, for some reason or other, largely practical, attract his attention, according to his crude experiences. He projects his own nature into them, fashions them after his own image, animates them, regards them as somehow alive and ensouled. Among many peoples, such vague and indefinite animistic notions are trans formed into clear and distinct conceptions of personalities, of a higher order than human beings, but yet essentially resem bling human beings (polytheism). None of these mythological creations, however, can be regarded as the work of single indi viduals or as the product of logical thought; they are expressions of the collective soul, in which imagination and will play the most important role. A universal history of philosophy would include the philoso phies of all peoples. Not all peoples, however, have produced real systems of thought, and the Speculations of only a few can be said to have had a history. Many do not rise beyond the mythological stage. Even the theories of Oriental peoples, the Hindus, Egyptians, Chinese, consist, in the main, of mythological and ethical doctrines, and are not thoroughgoing systems of thought; they are shot through with poetry and faith. We shall, therefore, limit ourselves to the study of the Western countries, and begin with the philosophy of the ancient Greeks, on whose culture our own civilization, in part, rests. We shall follow the customary classification of universal history and divide our field into Ancient Philosophy, Medieval or Christian Philosophy, and Modern Philosophy. I can only plead in my own excuse that an Oxford college tutor can only undertake Work such as belongs to the Lectureship Which I was privileged to hold from to 1914, if he is prepared to accomplish less than might reasonably be demanded from a lecturer able to devote the Whole or even the major part of his time to the duties of the lectureship. The present work was written before Professor Burnet's Greek Philosophy from Thales to Plato had appeared, and was already in print before I had an opportunity of reading that very important contribution to the study of the philosopher with whom my second course of lectures is con cerned. It seemed out of the question at so late a stage to attempt the task of remodelling what I had said, in View of the new light there thrown upon the subject. But I am on the whole disposed to think that, had such a revision been practicable, no very substantial changes would have resulted. In speaking, as I have often had occasion to speak, of the legacy of Veneration for the heavenly bodies bequeathed by Plato and Aristotle to the Natural Theology of the Middle Ages, I should no doubt have taken more pains to dissociate Plato from the Aristotelian contrast of the quintessential heavens and the sublunary world of grosser matter. But I had nowhere attributed to Plato this contrast as an express doctrine; and, on the other hand, the important fact, to which Professor Burnet has called attention, that Plato reckoned the earth as itself a planet - a fact from which it follows that his recognition of a divinity in the starry heavens did not imply a disparagement of the earth as being of a quite different and inferior nature - had so little influence upon the tradition with which I am here concerned that his authority went after all, though not by his own fault, to reinforce the authority of Aristotle in encouraging a notion equally injurious to the progress of religion and to that of natural science.
