Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Philosophy of David Hume Hume's attitude at the end of his career: he confesses to belief in some form of theism, and yet he justifies his conviction by a naturalistic view of human life and knowl edge the cosmic aspect of which seems utterly incompatible with any religious belief. In April 1917 I presented to the Faculty of Princeton University a portion of these studies as a dissertation in candidacy for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The dissertation was en titled An Introductory Study of Hume's Dialogues concerning Natural Religion, and comprised Chapters XI, XII, and XIII of this book, together with the sections from Chapter II dealing with Cicero, Bayle, Francis Bacon, Berkeley, and Malebranche (pp. 31-57) which followed immediately after the discussion of Part One of the Dialogues (p. Book excerpt: Reconsiders the centrality and legacy of Hume’s economic thought and serves as an important springboard for reflections on the philosophical underpinnings of economics. Although David Hume’s contributions to philosophy are firmly established, his economics has been largely overlooked. A Philosopher’s Economist offers the definitive account of Hume’s “worldly philosophy” and argues that economics was a central preoccupation of his life and work. Margaret Schabas and Carl Wennerlind show that Hume made important contributions to the science of economics, notably on money, trade, and public finance. Hume’s astute understanding of human behavior provided an important foundation for his economics and proved essential to his analysis of the ethical and political dimensions of capitalism. Hume also linked his economic theory with policy recommendations and sought to influence people in power. While in favor of the modern commercial world, believing that it had and would continue to raise standards of living, promote peaceful relations, and foster moral refinement, Hume was not an unqualified enthusiast. He recognized many of the underlying injustices of capitalism, its tendencies to promote avarice and inequality, as well as its potential for political instability and absolutism. Hume’s imprint on modern economics is profound and far-reaching, whether through his close friend Adam Smith or later admirers such as John Maynard Keynes and Friedrich Hayek. Schabas and Wennerlind’s book compels us to reconsider the centrality and legacy of Hume’s economic thought—for both his time and ours—and thus serves as an important springboard for reflections on the philosophical underpinnings of economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hume On the most cursory examination of his writings, two things are noticeable. First, they contain few references to his philosophical predecessors. They are neither enriched nor burdened with learning. Secondly, they enter very little into controversy with contemporaries. Hume deals mainly with the perennial aspects of the problems he discusses, and hence the abiding value of his treatment of them. The delay in the issue of this. Volume has been a matter of regret. It is not only that the subject has grown larger, the longer it has been studied; but, in collecting materials for another work on the philosophy of Hume, the desire to do justice to both - neither to anticipate the larger by the smaller, nor to lessen any interest the smaller may possess by the reservation of materials for the larger - may explain it. Book excerpt: This volume provides a new and nuanced appreciation of David Hume as a historian. Gone for good are the days when one can offhandedly assert, as R. G. Collingwood once did, that Hume “deserted philosophical studies in favour of historical” ones. History and philosophy are commensurate in Hume’s thought and works from the beginning to the end. Only by recognizing this can we begin to make sense of Hume’s canon as a whole and see clearly his many contributions to fields we now recognize as the distinct disciplines of history, philosophy, political science, economics, literature, religious studies, and much else besides. Casting their individual beams of light on various nooks and crannies of Hume’s historical thought and writing, the book’s contributors illuminate the whole in a way that would not be possible from the perspective of a single-authored study. Aside from the editor, the contributors are David Allan, M. A. Box, Timothy M. Costelloe, Roger L. Emerson, Jennifer Herdt, Philip Hicks, Douglas Long, Claudia M. Schmidt, Michael Silverthorne, Jeffrey M. Suderman, Mark R. M. Towsey, and F. L. van Holthoon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an introduction by Charlotte R. Brown and William Edward Morris. David Hume (1711–1776) was the most important philosopher ever to write in English, as well as a master stylist. This volume contains his major philosophical works. A Treatise of Human Nature (1739–1740), published while Hume was still in his twenties, consists of three books on the understanding, the passions, and morals. It applies the experimental method of reasoning to human nature in a revolution that was intended to make Hume the Newton of the moral sciences. Disappointed with the Treatise’s failure to bring about such a revolution, Hume later recast Book I as An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding (1751), and Book III as An Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals, which he regarded as ‘incomparably the best’ of all his works. Both Enquiries went through several editions in his lifetime. Hume’s works, controversial in his day, remain deeply and widely influential in ours, especially for his contributions to our understanding of the nature of morality, political and economic theory, philosophy of religion, and philosophical naturalism. This volume also includes Hume’s anonymous Abstract of Books I and II of the Treatise, and the short autobiographical essay, ‘My Own Life’, which he wrote just before his death.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of David Hume: Written by Himself My very slender fortune, however, being unsuit able to this plan of life, and my health being a little broken by my ardent application, Iwas tempted, or rather forced, to make a very feeble trial for enter ing into a more active scene of life. In 1734, I went to Bristol, with recommendations to eminent mer chants; but in a few months found that scene totally unsuitable to me. I went over to France with a view of prosecuting my studies in a country retreat; and there I laid that plan of life which I have steadily and successfully pursued. I resolved to make a very rigid frugality supply my deficiency of fortune, to maintain unimpaired my independency, and to regard every object as contemptible, except the improvement of my talents in literature. During my retreat in France, first at Rheims, but chiefly at La Fleche, in Anjou, I composed my Treatise of Human Nature. After passing three years very agreeably in that country, I came over to London, in 1737. In the end of 1738, I published my treatise, and immediately went down to my mother and my brother, who lived at his country-house, and was employing himself very judiciously and success fully in the improvement of his fortune.
