Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Field and Forest The descriptions of the phases of the year, included in this volume, were first printed in the years 1839 and 1840, in the "Boston Weekly Magazine," published by D. H. Ela and John B. Hall, The author afterwards, for several years, devoted himself entirely to the political press. Finding at last, that to keep along with his party, he must be prepared, on the arrival of every new era, to repudiate, if not to execrate the opinions and measures-which he had formerly defended, he renounced all connection with politics, and in 1853, resumed his occupation in that department of literature which he had so long neglected. The pieces now presented to the public are a selection from the contributions of the author to the periodical press, with the addition of several new ones. A large portion of these appeared originally in Charles M. Hovey's "Magazine of Horticulture," and a few others in the "Salem Gazette," in which the descriptions of the months were likewise reprinted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of Field, Forest and Park No man or woman of the coming generation can lay claim to a broad education who does not have at least a speaking acquaintance with the wild birds and animals of the country. Public sentiment will demand this. We all know persons who are skilled in belles lettres, who know the languages of various peoples, and have wide familiarity with the history of what man has done; persons who have travelled much and acquired learning in the various fine arts, but who have no knowledge of the names or habits of any of the fourteen hundred kinds of wild birds found in North America. Their knowledge is replete as to the things man has done, but regarding the works of Nature they are ignorant. They know nothing of the soil formation; of the history of the rocks over which they walk. They cannot name the trees in whose shade they stand, and their ears are deaf to the songs of the birds that reach them from the fields and roads. Such a person, if left alone in the country for a day without human companionship, or a book to read, is usually miserable until relief arrives. The wild life of the open means nothing to him. Today, in every State of the Union, thousands of intelligent teachers are mingling with their daily tasks some instruction regarding the habits of wild birds and their value to mankind. Half way across the two animal trails were aug meated by two more, - the big footprints of two men. From all appearances, the trail was getting warm and would soon terminate. Sure enough, it did, - at the stone wall bounding the farther side of the field. Here a large pile of stones (pulled from the wall but, as usual, not re placed) showed where bunny had taken refuge from his f our - legged pursuer, only to be pulled out by the two - legged ones. From this spot two pairs of shoe prints and one hound - trail led away as the owners went off in search of more game. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Familiar Life in Field and Forest: The Animals, Birds, Frogs, and Salamanders One can never tell at what moment some surpris ing demonstration of wild life will occur at one's very doorstep. What with two deer, nine weasels, and a performing bear, all of which appeared in one day last summer close to my studio, I concluded that our tame mountain retreat had relapsed again to the wild and happy conditions of the primitive forest. But I was forced to change my mind a few days after, when an Italian with his organ ground out Johnny, get your gun within forty feet of the spot where the wild deer had stood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flowers of the Field and Forest These articles are from the pen of a well known botanist of high standing and are accurate and trustworthy in every detail. The drawings and descriptions of the various flowers are in most cases trom actual specimens, and where these were lacking the works of recognized authoriti. Have been referred to. The ar ticlea constitute a calendar of plant life from early spring to late autumn, and the numerous illustrations and detailed descriptions will enable any one to identify a large number of the lion-om commonly met with in a ramble through the fields. The articles are written in pleasing style and an endeavour is made to set forth some of the more striking scientific truth in t. Mection with plant life in such a way as to be under stood by all. Botuny is not the dry uninteresting science that many imagine, it does not consist merely oi t: nming, claseilying, and comparing a collection of plants; the essen tial problem is to understand the life of the plant, to comprehend its functions, to in quire what is the use to the plant of its root, stem, leaves, its flower and fruit. This thought has been kept in view by the writer of articles in this book and if those who happen aerou it should be led to a better understanding of some of the problems of nature it will not have been published in in.
