Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inductive Studies in Theology: Including the Doctrines of Sin and the Atonement In no field of thought is the feebleness of human intellect more manifest than here. In none has our progress been so slow. In none has it been so difficult for succeeding generations to retain the conquests of the past. These are not treasures which can be catalogued in museums, or which can even be formu lated for keeping in books and in the memory. We can understand an Augustine, a Luther or a Wesley only as we live over again their spiritual life. Kant lies neglected on the shelf in a materialistic age, and few can follow the thoughts of such a spirit as T. H. Green. In the brief span of human life we must first live up to the measure of the past before we can step into the new beyond. It 1s not surprising, therefore, that the Christian world has moved so slowly. If these studies will help my younger brethren to grasp more of the treasures of the Divine wisdom, they will have served their purpose. This is the divine mission for which Christ was sent into the world. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. But what is the divine method of saving the world by Christ? Was the salvation of the human race to be purely an intellectual process, requiring only a divine teacher of the truth? Is the production of this great mental, moral, and spiritual change a function of the reason only, when it has been taught by Christ; or was the process of man's salvation to be ethical as well as rational, dc manding a perfect moral law, illustrated by the. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Atonement: A Brief Study To write a small book on a great theme, which has been the subject of learned and able debate for centuries, is not an easy task. I have undertaken it because of strong per suasion that some one ought to do it. Methodist writers have ably handled the subject of Atonement in large volumes, and in standard works on Systematic Divinity, so that the existing need is not for scientific and critical treatment, but for a plain state ment of the doctrine, which will serve to guide and help those who do not read the more elaborate discussions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Atonement The Atonement is certainly the greatest topic that can occupy our thoughts, because it is the central feature of God's Fatherhood, the central purpose of the life of Jesus Christ, the central object of the ceaseless and unsleeping energy of God the Holy Spirit in the Church. We will begin with the plain meaning of the word. I know no cause to doubt the simple derivation that Atonement is At-one-ment - the removal of all hindrances to perfect unity. That is the problem God has set before Himself to solve. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethics and Atonement The attempt to add to the many books that deal with the Atonement needs some excuse. Although, however, the subject has been so widely discussed, there is one side from which it has not often been approached, the side of those who arc not greatly concerned with theology, but arc keenly interested in morals and in life. Yet it is from this side that most people come to the consideration of the Atonement. Hence questions are often asked which treatises on the Atonement do not appear to answer, and the Atonement itself, instead of being the illuminating centre of theology, becomes a stumbling-block in the way of any real acceptance of religion. In the following pages I have endeavoured to maintain that the doctrine of the Atonement is not an artificial theorem or an inexplicable or unethical dogma, but that it has its roots in the foundations of all human life, and is really the highest expression of the law of all moral and social progress; and that ethics itself is of little use, as a practical science, unless completed by the Atonement. I have to thank Professor Palmer of Harvard University, the Rev. J. S. Lidgctt, M.A., Warden of the Bermondsey Settlement, and my colleague, Dr J. G. Tasker, for valuable advice in connexion with large portions of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Ideas of Atonement: Their History and Significance The aim of the following chapters is to set forth the content of the biblical teachings upon the subject of Atonement, and to suggest the point of view from which these conceptions may profitably be studied at the present day. The attitude assumed toward the records throughout is that of historical interpretation rather than of theological systematization. Consequently the effort is to discover precisely what ideas of atonement are reflected by the biblical laws, institutions, and utterances.
