Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Terrestrial Magnetism A short statement seems desirable as to the object of the present book. The volume does not aim at being a text-book of Terrestrial Magnetism, or at summarising existing knowledge in those branches of Terrestrial Magnetism with which it deals, but is intended to give a connected account of my own original work in that subject, referring to the work of others only so far as is necessary for intelligibility. It is hoped that other investigators will understand that the absence of reference to their work implies no lack of appreciation of its value. Again, while I have worked at several of the more important branches of Terrestrial Magnetism, there are other branches which I have scarcely touched on, if at all. The subject of Terrestrial Magnetism is very large and ever-increasing; and the contributions made to it by any one individual must form but a small fraction of the whole. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earth’s endemic life exists on an active planet, and its physical characteristics shape its development by affecting it in many ways. The planet’s magnetic field plays its part in that scenario. In this new book, the author concentrates on this little-understood aspect of terrestrial life’s existence. In an all-pervasive way, Earth’s natural magnetism imparts a pulse to the life forms that exist on the planet. From the very simplest to the most complex, organisms cannot ignore their natural magnetic environment. A lot of recent research into this phenomenon has been collated and reviewed by the author. In this book, he appraises the evidence from that research in a scientific yet interesting manner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COSPAR Colloquium on Solar-Terrestrial Magnetic Activity and Space Environment (STMASE) was held in the National Astronomy Observatories of Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC) in Beijing, China in September 10-12, 2001. The meeting was focused on five areas of the solar-terrestrial magnetic activity and space environment studies, including study on solar surface magnetism; solar magnetic activity, dynamical response of the heliosphere; space weather prediction; and space environment exploration and monitoring. A hot topic of space research, CMEs, which are widely believed to be the most important phenomenon of the space environment, is discussed in many papers. Other papers show results of observational and theoretical studies toward better understanding of the complicated image of the magnetic coupling between the Sun and the Earth, although little is still known little its physical background. Space weather prediction, which is very important for a modern society expanding into out-space, is another hot topic of space research. However, a long way is still to go to predict exactly when and where a disaster will happen in the space. In that sense, there is much to do for space environment exploration and monitoring. The manuscripts submitted to this Monograph are divided into the following parts: (1) solar surface magnetism, (2) solar magnetic activity, (3) dynamical response of the heliosphere, (4) space environment exploration and monitoring; and (5) space weather prediction. Papers presented in this meeting but not submitted to this Monograph are listed by title as unpublished papers at the end of this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introductory guide to global magnetic field properties, Earth Magnetism addresses, in non-technical prose, many of the frequently asked questions about Earth's magnetic field. Magnetism surrounds and penetrates our Earth in ways basic science courses can rarely address. It affects navigation, communication, and even the growth of crystals. As we observe and experience an 11-year solar maximum, we may witness spectacular satellite-destroying solar storms as they interact with our magnetic field. Written by an acknowledged expert in the field, this book will enrich courses in earth science, atmospheric science, geology, meteorology, geomagnetism, and geophysics. Contains nearly 200 original illustrations and eight pages of full-color plates. * Largely mathematics-free and with a wide breadth of material suitable for general readers * Integrates material from geomagnetism, paleomagnetism, and solar-terrestrial space physics. * Features nearly 200 original illustrations and 4 pages of colour plates

Book excerpt: This book offers a collection of papers presented in the International Conference on Geomagnetism, Paleomagnetism and Rock Magnetism held in Kazan (Russia) in October 2017. Papers in this book are dedicated to the study of the geomagnetic field through most of the Earth's history as well as planetary and meteorite magnetism, and magnetic signatures of terrestrial impact craters. Recent studies, summaries, and reviews include: 1 - theory of the geomagnetic field, its generation and variations; 2 - experimental data on the geomagnetic field changes; 3 – studies of rock magnetism; 4 – paleotectonic reconstructions and paleoceanography; 5 – magnetostratigraphy; 6 – extraterrestrial magnetism. Summary reports and reviews will be presented by the world’s leading experts in the field of geomagnetic studies. Such workshops held by Academic Council have become traditional. They are always attended by leading professionals from Russia, CIS and non-CIS countries. In addition to discussion sessions focused on recent studies and findings, lectures on some basic concepts of geomagnetism will be delivered by leading Russian and foreign scientists

Book excerpt: The articles in this volume provide a detailed review of all aspects of the main magnetic field of the Earth produced within the Earth’s core: its past history, its long and short term changes, the way it is generated. The book contains the combined knowledge of geomagnetism coming from paleomagnetic and archeomagnetic data, centuries of terrestrial observations and from the past few decades of intensive space observations. There is considerable emphasis on the phenomenology and the physical processes of the evolution of the geomagnetic field on different timescales. The book reports fully on our understanding of the present state of the magnetic field and its expected evolution in the future.
