Book Synopsis Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names by : Urs Eggli
Download or read book Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names written by Urs Eggli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-03-11 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Names are important elements to handle the diversity of items in daily life - persons, objects, animals, plants, etc. Without such names, it would be difficult to attach information to such items and to communicate information about them, and names are usually used without giving them much thought. This is not different for plants. When dealing with plants, however, it soon becomes apparent that the situation is somewhat more complex. Botanists use Latin names to bring order into the vast diversity, while everyday usage resorts to vemacular or "popular" names. As practical as these vernacular names are (it is not suggested that you should ask your greengrocer for a kilo gram of Solanum tuberosum or Musa paradisiaca subsp. sapientum), their most important draw back is the fact that they vary widely, not only from one language to another but also from coun try to country, even from region to region within a large country. More importantly, vemacular names in any given language are usually only available for the plants growing locally, or for plants of some special importance, such as crops and vegetables, medicinal plants, or important garden plants. For all other plants, the Latin names used by botanists and other scientists have to be employed. Such names often appear complicated or even awkward to the ears of those not accustomed to them.
Book Synopsis A Practical Field Guide to Weeds of Rice in Asia by : B. P. Caton
Download or read book A Practical Field Guide to Weeds of Rice in Asia written by B. P. Caton and published by Int. Rice Res. Inst.. This book was released on 2010 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weed infestations are a concern for every farmer . Depending on the type of rice production system, farmers across Asia often contend with the same or similar weed species. This group of species is relatively small, but of great importance, and includes many of the "world's worst weeds." In this guide, we have tried to collect practical information about some of the most common weeds of rice in Asia. The guide contains information about the botany, ecology, herbicide resistance, and cultural control of these species in a short text that should be easy to use in the field. In addition, it includes pictures to aid in early and accurate species identification.
Book Synopsis Economic Plants of Porto Rico (Classic Reprint) by : Orator Fuller Cook
Download or read book Economic Plants of Porto Rico (Classic Reprint) written by Orator Fuller Cook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Plants of Porto Rico This paper includes miscellaneous information on the principal cultivated plants of Porto Rico, brief notes on many of the minor economic plants, and a list of all the native names of plants which have thus far been recorded from the island, with references to the scientific names of the species to which t-hev are applied as far as these have been determined. As there are no botanical publications in either English or Spanish which give an even approximately complete treatment of the flora, it is believed that the present list of names and the brief notes accompanying will be found of use both to visitors and to residents of the island. Book Synopsis Bioremediation and Biotechnology by : Khalid Rehman Hakeem
Download or read book Bioremediation and Biotechnology written by Khalid Rehman Hakeem and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-26 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toxic substances threatens aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and ultimately human health. The book is a thoughtful effort in bringing forth the role of biotechnology for bioremediation and restoration of the ecosystems degraded by toxic and heavy metal pollution. The introductory chapters of the book deal with the understanding of the issues concerned with the pollution caused by toxic elements and heavy metals and their impacts on the different ecosystems followed by the techniques involved in monitoring of the pollution. These techniques include use of bio-indicators as well as modern techniques for the assessment and monitoring of toxicants in the environment. Detailed chapters discussing the role of microbial biota, aquatic plants, terrestrial plants to enhance the accumulation efficiency of these toxic and heavy metals are followed by remediation techniques involving myco-remediation, bio-pesticides, bio-fertilizers, phyto-remediation and rhizo-filtration. A sizable portion of the book has been dedicated to the advanced bio-remediation techniques which are finding their way from the laboratory to the field for revival of the degraded ecosystems. These involve bio-films, micro-algae, genetically modified plants and filter feeders. Furthermore, the book is a detailed comprehensive account for the treatment technologies from unsustainable to sustainable. We believe academicians, researchers and students will find this book informative as a complete reference for biotechnological intervention for sustainable treatment of pollution.
