The latest developments of philosophy demand a revision of the whole problem, from a shifted standpoint. Since 1917 realism has gained in solidity and a certain intricate precision. The Critical Realists have discovered a flaw in its theory of perception and tried to mend it (not, I think, with conspicuous success); Professor Whitehead has laid down its first principles once for all; and Professor Alexander has built it up into a system among systems. Realism is ten times more formidable than it was in 1917. And since 1917 the issue has been narrowed down to the field of Space and Time, and it is there that the battle between realism and idealism must be fought. That issue is very clear. For, however realists may differ among themselves, whether they say with Professor Alexander that Space-Time is the ultimate reality, or with Professor Whitehead that the ultimate entities are events, they are all agreed that mind is not the ultimate entity and must be kept out of the problem. It began in an inquiry into the signification of the term imagination in earlier English writers. This was found to be a trustworthy index of the several philosophers' po sitions in psychology. Interesting light was thrown upon the beginnings of idealism. With the English germs of idealism so completely laid bare, it has been thought worth while to retrace the study with especial reference to that move ment. In tracing this gradual development of and continued emphasis upon the synthetic func tion of mind, it has been thought relevant to the study to keep watch upon the formal explanation of union as well as the explanation that must underlie the description given by each author. Hence the importance of and attention given to the principle of association in these studies. In range and depth, however, they surpass the chronicle of the same period in the earlier volume. There we have but a brief recital of the mam phases of post-kantian doctrine, here an examination of its his torical foundation, its logical roots, its human as well as its technical motives. The selection of topics is here more rigorous and the interest more prevailingly theo retical. Moreover, what is here deliberately avoided is the familiar and conventional reproduction of post-kant ian thought. The usual method of the usual textbooks is here not repeated. In vain do we here look for the hackneyed themes of a hundred histories of philosophy. Royce does not seek the successors of Kant in the obvious tracts of ideas. He searches for them in the neglected aspects, ' the buried documents, the forgotten theses. These reveal to him the true meaning of their teachings; these disclose to him the spirit of the post-kantian move ment. In the early works of Schelling, for instance, Royce finds the pulse of the dialectical method, and in the Phenomenology rather than in the Logic he discovers the soul of Hegel. And, though the present' study is wanting in completeness, there is no shirking of the most difficult problems but rather a choosing of them and a discussion of them with a power, adequacy and clear ness which, as we look about, Royce alone seemed able to summon to such a task.
