Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " The Mellah of Marrakesh] captures the vibrancy of Jewish society in Marrakesh in the tumultuous last decades prior to colonial rule and in the first decades of life in the colonial era. Although focused on the Jewish community, it offers a compelling portrait of the political, social, and economic issues confronting all of Morocco and sets a new standard for urban social history." --Dale F. Eickelman Weaving together threads from Jewish history and Islamic urban studies, The Mellah of Marrakesh situates the history of what was once the largest Jewish quarter in the Arab world in its proper historical and geographical contexts. Although framed by coverage of both earlier and later periods, the book focuses on the late 19th century, a time when both the vibrancy of the mellah and the tenacity of longstanding patterns of inter-communal relations that took place within its walls were being severely tested. How local Jews and Muslims, as well as resident Europeans lived the big political, economic, and social changes of the pre- and early colonial periods is reconstructed in Emily Gottreich's vivid narrative. Published with the generous support of the Koret Foundation.

Book Synopsis Trade and Industry in Tudor and Stuart England by : Sybil M. Jack
Download or read book Trade and Industry in Tudor and Stuart England written by Sybil M. Jack and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-07-25 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1977, this book investigates the controversial question as to whether England has seen two industrial revolutions, whether economic changes in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in England deserve to be distinguished as a period in which an economic ‘revolution’ nearly took place, but eventually aborted. The book considers the changes that took place in the most important industries in the period and estimates the significance of these changes for the overall structure of the English economy. It also assesses the attitudes of the various historians involved in the debate and the nature of the evidence on which their arguments have been based. The combination of critical assessment in the introduction and the evidence of the 34 original documents will guarantee a wide readership of the book among students and teachers of economic history.

Book Synopsis England Under the Tudors by : G.R. Elton
Download or read book England Under the Tudors written by G.R. Elton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Anyone who writes about the Tudor century puts his head into a number of untamed lions’ mouths.’ G.R. Elton, Preface Geoffrey Elton (1921–1994) was one of the great historians of the Tudor period. England Under the Tudors is his major work and an outstanding history of a crucial and turbulent period in British and European history. Revised several times since its first publication in 1955, England Under the Tudors charts a historical period that witnessed monumental changes in religion, monarchy, and government – and one that continued to shape British history long after. Spanning the commencement of Henry VII's reign to the death of Elizabeth I, Elton’s magisterial account is populated by many colourful and influential characters, from Cardinal Wolsey, Thomas Cranmer, and Thomas Cromwell to Henry VIII and Mary Queen of Scots. Elton also examines aspects of the Tudor period that had been previously overlooked, such as empire and commonwealth, agriculture and industry, seapower, and the role of the arts and literature. This Routledge Classics edition includes a new foreword by Diarmaid MacCulloch.
Book Synopsis The Age of Elizabeth by : D.M. Palliser
Download or read book The Age of Elizabeth written by D.M. Palliser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This famous book was the first up-to-date survey of its field for a generation; even today, when work on early modern social history proliferates, it remains the only general economic history of the age. This second edition, substantially revised and expanded, is clear in outline, rich in detail, stressing continuity as well as change, balancing the glamour of privilege with the misery and privation of the poor, and dealing with the dark side of Tudor life -- vagabondage, starvation, superstition and cruelty -- as well as its heroic achievements.

Book Synopsis England's Treasure by Forraign Trade by : Thomas Mun
Download or read book England's Treasure by Forraign Trade written by Thomas Mun and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-08-10 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "England's Treasure by Foreign Trade" is the best example of mercantilist commitment to a national project to increase production and wealth through trade. It also most effectively demonstrates the moral value that mercantilists place on such a project. In this book, Mun begins by arguing that trade activities are superior - both economically and morally - to the idle life of landowners who live off rents. In this sense, trade is the path to civilization. 'There is more dignity and financial gains in an Industrious life than in a great inheritance that was wasteth for want of virtue,' he writes. The author of this book concludes by asserting that no currency changes, trade restrictions, or other restrictions will ever prevent the following rule from being followed:'so much Treasure only will be brought in or carried out of a Commonwealth as the Foreign Trade doth over or under balance in value.' Foreign trade is more than just "the sinews of our wars" and "the means of our treasure." It is also referred to as "The School of Our Arts," "The Employment of Our Poor," and "The Improvement of Our Lands." This is why foreign trade must be safeguarded against our adversaries.
