Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Christianity The Essays have not been written for special ists, nor for professional unbelievers, but solely to relieve some of the difficulties under which popular religious thought labors because of misunderstanding. Indeedl the entire volume might be described as _an aid to progressive or thodoxy, or as_a_n to combine the new theology with the __old religion. That the future as well as the past belongs to the old religion I am perfectly sure. This religion has often been ignorantly and inadequately conceived, and even caricatured at times by its disciples, but it has the advantage over all its competitors and proposed substitutes of being alive; and life counts for much in organic history, spiritual as well as physical. At the same time the old religion may need a new theology for its better expression and formulation, and in this sense a new theology may be a valuable aid to the old religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Life of Christ T hese Studies in the Life of Christ were originally prepared as a series of Sunday evening discourses, while the author was a minister in Aberdeen. This is stated, partly, that he may connect them with a city and people he will always love, and, partly, that he may thus most simply define their real character and limits. They are not exhaustive and critical discussions on the Gospel History, but, at most, attempts at orientation - at reach ing points of view from which the life of Christ may be understood and construed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Early Church History The period of which these studies treat extends from the time of Christ to the reign of Constantine, the first Christian Roman Emperor. This era has been called, The Heroic Age of the Church It was during these three hundred years that Christianity encountered the bitter hostility of the Roman and Greek religions and systems of philosophy and was under the ban of the civil power. It was then that it formulated its doctrines, set forth its principles, wrote its New Testament books and endured its fiery persecutions. In the enthusiasm and freshness of their faith, its converts dared all things; no tasks were too hard, no hardships too great and no tortures too painful, when called for in the name of Jesus Christ, the Lord and Saviour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Survivals in Christianity: Studies in the Theology; Of Divine Immanence This preface is merely explanatory. If an author thinks he ought to apologise for his book, then he ought never to publish that book. Besides, the Cerberus of literary criticism is not mollified by sops of apology. My purpose in sending forth this book is to help honest and earnest truth-seekers both to find what is real and true in the realm of religious thought, and to accept with equal honesty and intelligence the Evangel of Jesus the Christ. Whenever men thus find and accept the truth as it is in Jesus, they will also realise and rejoice in the organic unity of the Church, for which I hopefully pray. In citing the Scriptures of the New Covenant I have followed Tischendorf's Greek text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pauline and Other Studies in Early Christian History Of the following essays one is entirely new. Six may be called new, as each is worked up anew out of several articles. For example, No. XIV. contains parts of five articles on Pauline Chronology. The rest have been carefully revised and improved in many details. It has encouraged me greatly to find that even in the oldest articles no change of opinion on Pauline topics has been needed, except to write sometimes more confidently. The object originally was to state facts, not to make daring inferences; and further study during the intervening years has simply been a process of building on the foundation of these old studies. One correction was needed on page 358. About May, A. D. 62, the Jews sent a deputation to meet the new governor of Palestine at Alexandria. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginnings of Christianity The studies and discourses that are herein ofiered to the public deal with some general conditions of Christian life in the first three centuries of our era. Though already printed, at intervals and amid the pressure of grave academic duties, it is hoped that a certain unity of doctrine, purpose, and interest will not be found wanting to their collection as a series. In one way or another they illustrate certain phases and circumstances of those wonderful centuries before Constantine the Great, when the constitution and the institutions of the new religious society were de veloping on all sides within the vast Empire of Rome. The teachings of Jesus Christ were the pure, sweet leaven that permeated the decaying and unhappy society of antiquity, saved from its mass of corruption some germs of goodness and truth, of beauty and justice, and strengthened the State against those shocks that would otherwise have reduced it to pri maeval barbarism. A perennial charm must therefore attach to any narrative of the problems and vicissi tudes of this era. This is particularly true of the sufferings of the infant churches, and the social changes their rapid growth could not fail to work in the Roman society that seemed to contain them, but of which. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Following the Master: Short Studies in the Christian Life As no elementary work could be found which seemed to answer the purpose, a lesson was prepared each week and read to the class, some of whom wrote out in full even the scripture references. The lesson was thoroughly discussed and the references read in the class. The attempt was made to teach the Chris tian life as a consistent Whole, something worth living for, and, if need be, worth dying for. The interest taken by the class and the help appar ently given them have encouraged the writer to revise the studies and put them into a more permanent form. They are sent forth with the hope and prayer that they may be used in some way, however humble, for the progress of the kingdom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from International Aspects of Christianity The following fifteen Studies are designed to present in as many forms the international aspects of the Christian religion. They are prepared in the spirit of most loyal patriotism. True internationalism is the final bulwark and warrant of national loyalty. The writers believe that no adequate or permanent patriotism is possible unless it lives within the range of international sympathy and service. These Studies are intended to quicken and fortify those who use them to a profounder appreciation of the meaning of democracy. We believe that the noblest expression of democracy is to be found in the Christian religion. To stimulate the study of this as it manifests itself in many ways a manual is needed. We hope that such a guide may be found in the following pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cross of Christ: Studies in the History of Religion and the Inner Life of the Church A delineation, briefly presenting in its leading features the historic course of development which gave rise successively to these main forms and phases of the religion of the Cross, may, on account of the beauty and grandeur of its object, be regarded as secured against the suspicion of micrologic dul ness. The history of the Cross necessarily presents a reflected image of the history of Christianity itself, and indeed a more instructive and important one than any other similar contem plation, under the veil of an emblem, of the rise and growth of our religion hitherto, which might in any way be attempted. Specially upon a closer examination of its preparatory history - in the remarkable and partly enigmatical airy reflections which, in the form of so many a cruciform symbol upon the art monuments of the pre-christian as of modern Heathen dom, serve as heralds and precursors of the cultus of the Cross in the Christian Church - does our subject awaken interest in every one at all endowed with historic culture, and a sense for the appreciation of higher ethical endeavours and problems. The title Contribution to the Philosophy of History, pertains with unquestionable right to a treatment of the subject designed and executed from such standpoint; even though from time to time an indispensable entering into the details of the controversies with regard to the archeology of worship or of art, as also an examination of the more important phenomena of the dogmatic or mystic-ascetic literature bearing upon our subject, should occasion many deviations from the mode of treatment ordinarily prevailing in works on the philosophy of history.
