One who would give an exact picture of the civilised world of Augustusfs time, of its cities, its manners, its amusements - who could make it live again in the pages of history and render its modern equivalent - Would at the same time afford an explanation of its decay. The first impression left on us by such a sketch would no doubt be one of vast outward prosperity. N ever had life seemed more brilliant and more gay than in the first century of our era. N ever had the elements of dispeace and confusion seemed more utterly banished. Never had a civil Government reached more that centralisa tion of power which seemed to guarantee its perpetuity. The Roman peace brooded over all the quarters of the civilised world. The vast Roman State, stretching out its arms in all directions, was only the visible represen tation of the power of one man, who had absorbed all lesser powers and magistracies in his own person - who, through his ministers and agents, was present in every part of its remote dominions, conscious of the minutest actions, and of the slightest throb of life, powerful ever to reward or punish. The only real unity indeed existing in that immense dominion was expressed by the Autocrat's absolute will, and by the supreme power of the conquering people. All the subject-races re tained, no doubt, to some extent, their own individuality, more so in the East than in the West. The picture of the empire at this period is a varied and majestic one. Ou the very outskirts of the Roman power one might come on rich and populous cities. Seleucia, on the Tigris, rebuilt and enlarged, occupied, after the capital, the most important position in point of population; Antioch came next. It had lately been laid out by. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Early Church History The period of which these studies treat extends from the time of Christ to the reign of Constantine, the first Christian Roman Emperor. This era has been called, The Heroic Age of the Church It was during these three hundred years that Christianity encountered the bitter hostility of the Roman and Greek religions and systems of philosophy and was under the ban of the civil power. It was then that it formulated its doctrines, set forth its principles, wrote its New Testament books and endured its fiery persecutions. In the enthusiasm and freshness of their faith, its converts dared all things; no tasks were too hard, no hardships too great and no tortures too painful, when called for in the name of Jesus Christ, the Lord and Saviour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pauline and Other Studies in Early Christian History Of the following essays one is entirely new. Six may be called new, as each is worked up anew out of several articles. For example, No. XIV. contains parts of five articles on Pauline Chronology. The rest have been carefully revised and improved in many details. It has encouraged me greatly to find that even in the oldest articles no change of opinion on Pauline topics has been needed, except to write sometimes more confidently. The object originally was to state facts, not to make daring inferences; and further study during the intervening years has simply been a process of building on the foundation of these old studies. One correction was needed on page 358. About May, A. D. 62, the Jews sent a deputation to meet the new governor of Palestine at Alexandria. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Course of Christian History The history of Christianity is the story of the origin, prog ress and development of the Christian religion, and of its influence upon the world. Almost nineteen centuries have passed since Jesus Christ began his public ministry for the establishment of the religion which bears his name. Dur ing this long period Christianity has been more and more dominating the lives of men, illuminating their minds, strengthening them in their moral struggles, irradiating their hopes, making earth more tolerable and heaven more inviting and certain. The story of this growing and spread ing influence is the external history of Christianity. But as Christianity has expanded there has come con stant inner change. From the unity and simplicity of orig inal Christianity have developed the multiplicity of Chris tian sects with their varied forms of organization and wor ship, their divergent views of theology and the ordinances, their various types of Christian thought and life, as we see them to-day. The story of these changes is the inner his tory of Christianity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Christianity I am often told by my friends that Christianity is nothing but a set of statements about supernatural history which no one now can honestly believe. When I deny this, they ask me what Christianity is; and, if I try to tell them, they reply - That is not Christianity at all but certain beliefs which were held by men before Christ was born and may be held by them after his name has been forgotten. But, all the while, I am convinced that there is a body of belief, not concerned with supernatural history, which is Christian; that it began with the teaching of Christ, as Platonism began with the teaching of Plato, that it has been enlarged and enriched with the experience of nineteen centuries and yet has remained itself. I am not anxious to prove the originality of Christ in detail. It may be that he said no single thing which had not been said before him. The originality of a great teacher consists, not in particular sayings or doings, but in his power of giving life to an idea so that it continues to live in other men's minds and is enriched with other men's thought. The greatest ideas are not those which remain peculiar to their authors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cross of Christ: Studies in the History of Religion and the Inner Life of the Church A delineation, briefly presenting in its leading features the historic course of development which gave rise successively to these main forms and phases of the religion of the Cross, may, on account of the beauty and grandeur of its object, be regarded as secured against the suspicion of micrologic dul ness. The history of the Cross necessarily presents a reflected image of the history of Christianity itself, and indeed a more instructive and important one than any other similar contem plation, under the veil of an emblem, of the rise and growth of our religion hitherto, which might in any way be attempted. Specially upon a closer examination of its preparatory history - in the remarkable and partly enigmatical airy reflections which, in the form of so many a cruciform symbol upon the art monuments of the pre-christian as of modern Heathen dom, serve as heralds and precursors of the cultus of the Cross in the Christian Church - does our subject awaken interest in every one at all endowed with historic culture, and a sense for the appreciation of higher ethical endeavours and problems. The title Contribution to the Philosophy of History, pertains with unquestionable right to a treatment of the subject designed and executed from such standpoint; even though from time to time an indispensable entering into the details of the controversies with regard to the archeology of worship or of art, as also an examination of the more important phenomena of the dogmatic or mystic-ascetic literature bearing upon our subject, should occasion many deviations from the mode of treatment ordinarily prevailing in works on the philosophy of history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Modern Church History In placing this book in the hands of its publishers 1 hope to be regarded as showing my appreciation of the courtesy and kindness of the successive classes to which the lectures were delivered, in calling for their publication, as well as of the very gratifying manner in which this request was so re peatedly conveyed to me. I wish also in this way to indi cate the gratification I feel in recalling the gentlemanly bear ing of each class towards one whose only claim to their consideration was a sincere desire to be of service. The lectures were first delivered while Dr. T. J. Morgan was Professor of Church History in the Seminary; but chiefly since that important chair has been occupied by Dr. E. B. Hulbert. To both these gentlemen my thanks are due for the privilege of thus sharing with them in their work. It will not be improper, I trust, for me to speak of the special attention given by Dr. Hulbert to the department of church history treated of in these pages, and of the marked interest his students show in those aspects of historical Christianity which concern the church and the world as they now are. Under the leadership of President Northrup the Seminary is adapting its course of study in many ways to the peculiar needs of the present time, and in the particular here alluded to by no means least of all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Life of Christ T hese Studies in the Life of Christ were originally prepared as a series of Sunday evening discourses, while the author was a minister in Aberdeen. This is stated, partly, that he may connect them with a city and people he will always love, and, partly, that he may thus most simply define their real character and limits. They are not exhaustive and critical discussions on the Gospel History, but, at most, attempts at orientation - at reach ing points of view from which the life of Christ may be understood and construed. Book excerpt: Eminent church historian and theologian Professor Williston Walker gives us an authoritative and scholarly account on the progress of the church founded by Christ, aptly titled A History of the Christian Church. First published in 1918, this edition has since gone on to become one of the classics in Christian literature. It examines various periods that led to the establishment of the church and how the Reformation came about in light of the preceding events. The author begins this volume with a discussion on the general situation before proceeding to talk about Judaism, the rise of Jesus and his disciples, the end of the apostolic era and the development of Christianity in the second century AD. From Gnosticism at the beginning of the book, he ends with the eventual transition to the modern situation, tackling various subjects such as English Unitarianism, Methodism, Catholicism, and even American Christianity - religious denominations and divisions which remain relevant to this day. The exhaustive nature of Professor Walker's work shows his expertise in the subject and the extent of the research he has done to produce a classic historical account of superb quality. Students of religious studies, as well as those seeking enlightenment on the development of the modern Christian church will benefit much from this clearly written and comprehensive opus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Religion and Theology the Church: In Idea and in History "Studies" is to me an old and familiar friend in the title of a book. I remember submitting a question, directly suggested by a first literary project, to a Professor, who later became Principal, in a northern university, viz.: - "What name would he give to a book made up of scientific attempts to conceive and represent formulated ideas, not, indeed, according to their place in a system, but in the isolation which was independence?" Without hesitation the answer came back: "would call it 'Studies.'" And when years later a kindred question was submitted, a kindred answer was returned. The name was not intended to qualify the ideas interpreted but the attempt at their interpretation; and was equal to essay in the old sense, better represented by assay than by any other modern term. This does not denote "a written composition shorter and less elaborate than a treatise," but simply an attempt to examine the ideas by their interpretation. And this is the meaning which is attached to the word "Studies." This book may seem too dogmatic to be fitly characterized by so undogmatic a name. Though I confess that its basis is formed by a collection of scattered papers, yet it has become a treatise on the church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Early Church History: Collected Papers Out of this earlier work I have had to try and preserve what seemed worth preserving, and at the same time to pro duce a more or less homogeneous volume. The title I have chosen indicates that the common thread which binds these papers together is that they all deal with various aspects of the history of the primitive Church, textual and critical details having been as far as possible relegated to the appendices. The late Dr. William Bright, Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History, generously paid me to lecture as his assistant, from 1888 till his death in 1901, on the ante-nicene period.
