Book Synopsis Anglo-Irish Literature by : A. Norman Jeffares
Download or read book Anglo-Irish Literature written by A. Norman Jeffares and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1982-09-02 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works of many Anglo-Irish writers are familiar to us. English literature has often been dominated by Irish writers who wrote in English. In this highly entertaining and informative book, Professor Jeffares surveys the whole range of one of the richest literary traditions from its beginnings in the Middle Ages to the modern period. The earlier writing is discussed chronologically, but the great wealth of writing in the last century is discussed in genres: poetry, fiction and drama. The writers are set in their social and political context. Not only are the works of major writers from Swift to Beckett surveyed, but the work of minor and neglected writers such as Charled Maturin, Lady Morgan and Emily Lawless, is bought to the fore. This is a book to help students to a great understanding of the subject. To this end a chronological table, bibliographies and photographs have been included. It is also a book for all those who have enjoyed reading the poems of Yeats, the plays of Shaw or the novels of Joyce.

This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literature in Ireland: Studies Irish and Anglo-Irish These Studies in Irish and Anglo-Irish Literature are frankly experimental. In them I have tried to clear away certain misconceptions, to fix certain standards, to define certain terms. I trust that as a result the Irish Mode will be better understood and appreciated than the Celtic Note for which I substitute it. My exclusion from the scope of these inquiries of the Hiberno-English writers of the eighteenth century has already provoked protests from my friends. They do indeed form a band apart in English Literature, with the common characteristic of adventurous and haughty individualism. But to me, who look rather from the Gaelic stand-point, the attitude of Swift, Steele, Sheridan, Burke, Goldsmith and the rest, for all that they have in common and for all that they owe to their Irish birth or upbringing, is an attitude rather of dissent from an English orthodoxy than of consent in an orthodoxy of their own or of Ireland's. Book Synopsis "An Anarchy in the Mind and in the Heart" by : Ellen M. Wolff
Download or read book "An Anarchy in the Mind and in the Heart" written by Ellen M. Wolff and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of some of Anglo-Ireland's most compelling twentieth-century attempts at self-representation. In contrast to formative studies that read Anglo-Irish fiction as a predictably colonialist literature that nostalgically champions ruling-class culture, the author argues that novels by such authors as Molly Keane, Elizabeth Bowen, and Samuel Beckett are in fact richly textured narratives that sustain continuous debates with their own visions and revisions of history and culture. The book contributes to the ongoing effort in Irish cultural studies to analyze myths and stereotypes that have been both symptom and cause of Irish troubles past and present, and helps destabilize problematically binary terminologies, toward which discourse about postcoloniality can tend. In the process, the author refines received ideas about literary modernism and post-modernism, and suggests failings in the prevailing theory and practice of ideology critique. Ellen M. Wolff is Eleanor Gwin Ellis Instructor in English at Phillips Exeter Academy.
