Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collected Reprints From the Department of Experimental Surgery of the New York University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College, Vol. 3: 1920-1922 Increase in the force or rate or change in the direction of gastric contractions have followed irritation of the gallbladder, duodenum, or appendix, experimentally, and these motor changes have been associated with pathological gallbladders, duodenums, and appendices, clinically.l It may be assumed, subject to further experimental proof, that these organs constitute three of the possible foci of reflex gastric stimulation. Were the nerve paths known along which these impulses travel, it might be possible to explain these motor responses and group other possible causes of gastric motor unrest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cornell University Medical Bulletin; July, 1920, Vol. 10: Studies From the Department of Surgery It will be noted that none of these cases is recorded as excellent. We do not feel that we can SO classify them, owing to the possibility Of a recurrence. We have, therefore, divided them into two groups - satis factory (free from recurrence) and unsatisfactory (recurrence) Carcinoma of the breast. In general our follow-up report Of breast carcinoma shows that recurrence is much more frequent than one would believe from the literature. We believe that a patient Should be in good condition six years after operation to count a case as cured. As our series only goes back six years we believe that not enough time has elapsed for us to draw definite conclusions. In our study Of breast cases, we believe that cases come too late for operation and that progress must be made towards earlier recognition and earlier operation. After a bit of questioning, I sent the husband on an errand. As the door closed behind him I said, Now, quick, tell me what's the matter. The startled wife then told me that their young priest. A close friend of the husband. Was almost daily assailing her virtue, and that she was quite distracted between fear that she might yield and fear to tell her husband. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cornell University Medical Bulletin, Vol. 13: Studies From the Department of Surgery; July, 1923 An abscess treated as described above drains in a marvellous fashion. The fluid readily escapes both alongside the rubber dam and by capillary drainage through the loosely packed gauze. The intraabdominal contents are kept back with a minimum Of trauma and irritation. The removal Of the gauze and the tampon itself is absolutely painless, a factor to which I attach the highest importance. In cases Of a large neglected abscess it is my custom to rely largely upon this large tampon and not use any sutures in the abdominal wall. Sutures in the abdominal wall have two disadvantages: (i) Stitch holes are likely to be come infected and be Of themselves a complication, and (2) by locking up Of the fascial planes, which are likely to become infected, secondary infection of the abdominal wall with necrosis Of the fascia and Sloughing may occur. By the omission Of sutures and reliance on the tampon, we have for the most part a wound which has absolutely no reaction and is absolutely painless. In fact, we have the impression that the convalescence Of patients treated in this way is very much more comfortable than by other methods. In this connection the liver lesions of typhoid fever, diphtheria and other acute infections as well as various experimental infections of animals are quoted. It is probable, however, that in such cases the reparative power of the cells is in some way delayed, or consists possibly of a true regeneration of liver cells without the proliferation of connective tissue; for in hog cholera, in which above all other diseases, necroses of the liver are most abundant and widespread, cirrhosis of the liver commonly occurs. Salmon, Smith and Kilborne, in the study of hog cholera in an epidemic including both acute and chronic cases, found well marked cirrhosis in about half of the animals examined. Book excerpt: Experimental surgery is an important link for the development in clinical surgery, research and teaching. Experimental surgery was part of the most important surgical discoveries in the past century. Since 1901 nine Nobel Prizes have been awarded to the pioneers had remarkable achievements in the basic or practical surgery. In recent 20 years, experimental surgery has achieved new advances, like laparoscopic and robotic surgery, tissue engineering, and gene therapy which are widely applied in clinic surgery. The present book covers wide experimental surgery in preclinical research models subdivided in two volumes. Volume I introduces surgical basic notions, techniques, and different surgical models involved in basic experimental surgery and review the biomechanical models, ischemia/reperfusion injury models, repair and regeneration models, and organ and tissue transplantation models, respectively. Volume II introduces several specific experimental models such as laparoscopic and bariatric experimental surgical models. The second volume also introduces graft-versus-host disease, and other experimental models. Review the advances and development of recent techniques such as tissue engineering, organ preservation, wound healing and scarring, gene therapy and robotic surgery. The book documents the enormous volume of knowledge we have acquired in the field of experimental surgery. In this book, we have invited experts from the United States, Canada, France, Germany, China, Japan, Korea, UK, Sweden, Netherland, Hungary and Turkey to contribute 36 chapters in the fields of their expertise. These two volumes are the compilation of basic experimental surgery and updated advances of new development in this field that will be invaluable to surgeons, residents, graduate students, surgical researchers, physicians, immunologists, veterinarians and nurses in surgery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public health officials and organizations around the world remain on high alert because of increasing concerns about the prospect of an influenza pandemic, which many experts believe to be inevitable. Moreover, recent problems with the availability and strain-specificity of vaccine for annual flu epidemics in some countries and the rise of pandemic strains of avian flu in disparate geographic regions have alarmed experts about the world's ability to prevent or contain a human pandemic. The workshop summary, The Threat of Pandemic Influenza: Are We Ready? addresses these urgent concerns. The report describes what steps the United States and other countries have taken thus far to prepare for the next outbreak of "killer flu." It also looks at gaps in readiness, including hospitals' inability to absorb a surge of patients and many nations' incapacity to monitor and detect flu outbreaks. The report points to the need for international agreements to share flu vaccine and antiviral stockpiles to ensure that the 88 percent of nations that cannot manufacture or stockpile these products have access to them. It chronicles the toll of the H5N1 strain of avian flu currently circulating among poultry in many parts of Asia, which now accounts for the culling of millions of birds and the death of at least 50 persons. And it compares the costs of preparations with the costs of illness and death that could arise during an outbreak.
