Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Fossil Botany, Vol. 2: Spermophyta Since the previous edition appeared, the author's views as to the relationships of the Pteridosperms have changed. The theory that they were derived from Ferns no-longer appears tenable. The Seed Plants, of which the Pteridosperms seem to be the most primitive representatives known, are now regarded as an inde pendent phylum, running back as far as any of the recognised lines of the Higher Cryptogams. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Paleontological Botany The first award of the Fellowship has been made to a distinguished student, who acquitted himself with the greatest credit during the three days of examination on Geology, Zoology, and Botany. I trust that the Fellowship will continue to stimulate our eminent students in future years. Having been a student of Natural Science along with Dr. Falconer, I feel a peculiar interest in doing what I can to promote the study of a subject to which he so successfully devoted his energies. In my endeavour to do so I have been encouraged by my friend and former pupil, Mr. William Carruthers, at the head of the Botanical Department of the British Museum, and a former student in Edinburgh under the late Professor Fleming. He has done much to advance our knowledge of Fossil Botany, and to him I am indebted for two of the plates and some of the woodcuts which illus trate this publication. He has given me most efficient assistance, and I have to return my best thanks for his kind aid. I am also indebted to my colleague, Professor Geikie, for his valued assistance. The neighbourhood of Edinburgh is rich in Fossils of the Carboniferous epoch, and much yet remains to be done to illustrate its Palaeontology. Such labourers as Geikie and Peach may be expected to give great assistance in the furtherance of our knowledge of Scottish Geology, so as to form a school which shall revive the reputation enjoyed by Edinburgh in the days of Hutton and Jameson. If I can be useful in encouraging students to take up the study of Palaeontological Botany, and to 'prosecute it with vigour, I shall feel that this introductory treatise has not been issued in vain. As one of the few surviving relations of Dr. James Hutton, I am glad to be able to show an interest in a science which may aid in elucidating the Theory of the Earth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fossil Plants, Vol. 3: A d104-Book of Students, of Botany and Geology In the Preface to Volume II published in 1910 I rashly stated that it was my intention "to devote such space as is available within the limits of a text-book to the neglected subject of the geographical distribution of plants at different stages in the history of the earth," also that Volume III would be completed with as little delay as possible. Though nearly seven years have elapsed since the publication of the second volume it may fairly be said that the delay is not entirely due to causes which it was in my power to control. The subject of geographical distribution receives no connected treatment in Volumes III and IV for the simple reason that I underestimated the space required for the description of the Gymnosperms. The alternatives were either to insert a greatly compressed survey of the successive floras of the world at the end of Volume IV or to attempt a fuller and less technical treatment of the subject in a separate book. In choosing the latter course I am conscious that a further obligation is undertaken which it may not be possible to fulfil; but the risk is deliberately taken. Volume IV is in the press and will, it is hoped, be published before the end of 1917. It is a pleasant duty to repeat my thanks to many friends who have helped me in various ways. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies Fossil Botany The exceptionally rapid progress of Fossil Botany during the last eight years has rendered necessary a very thorough revision of this book, and the rewriting of considerable portions. At the same time care has been taken to maintain the original character of the "Studies" as a first introduction to "those results of palæontological inquiry which appear to be of fundamental importance from the botanist's point of view." No attempt has been made to extend the scope of the book, which now, as before, is concerned essentially with the morphological and evolutionary aspects of Palæobotany, but in every chapter new results of research have been incorporated. Chapters I.-IX. cover the Pteridophyta, i.e. those groups of Vascular Plants which may still be considered as, on the whole, Cryptogamic. Chapters X.-XIV. contain the Spermophyta, so far as they are dealt with, concluding with the chapter on "General Results." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fossil Plants, Vol. 4: A Text-Book for Students of Botany and Geology; Ginkgoales, Coniferales, Gnetales Through the death of Dr Newell Arber in June of last year at the comparatively early age of forty-seven Botany and Geology have lost an able and indefatigable investigator. Since 1901, the date of publication of his first paper, he laboured incessantly and with success to advance palaeobotanical science. To his activity the Sedgwick Museum of Geology at Cambridge is deeply indebted, and through his personal influence several younger men acquired something of their teacher's enthusiasm. The proofs of this Volume were passed for press in June, 1918, but owing to the exigencies of war conditions publication has been unexpectedly and inevitably delayed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fossil Plants, Vol. 2: A Text-Book for Students of Botany and Geology I am well aware that while certain genera have received an undue share of attention in the present volume, others have been ignored or treated with scant consideration. For this inconsistency I have no excuse to offer, beyond the state ment that the subject is a large one, and selection is necessary even though the work consists of three volumes. The publication in 1909 of a collection of excellent photo graphs of Palaeozoic Plants, with brief descriptive notes, by Mr Newell Arber, as one of a series of popular Nature Books, bears striking testimony to the remarkable spread of interest in the study of the vegetation of the past, which is one of the outstanding features in the recent history of botanical science. In the list of illustrations I have mentioned the source of all figures which have been previously published. I would, however, supplement the statement of fact with an expression of thanks to corporate bodies and to individuals who have allowed me to make use of blocks, drawings, or photographs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Plants Being a Simple Account of the Past Vegetation of the Earth, and of the Recent Important, Discoveries Made in This Realm, of Nature Study The number and the importance of the discoveries which have been made in the course of the last five or six years in the realm of Fossil Botany have largely altered the aspect of the subject and greatly widened its horizon. Until comparatively recent times the rather narrow outlook and the technical difficulties of the study made it one which could only be appreciated by specialists. This has been gradually changed, owing to the detailed anatomical work which it was found possible to do on the carboniferous plants, and which proved to be of great botanical importance. About ten years ago textbooks in English were written, and the subject was included in the work of the honours students of Botany at the Universities. To-day the important bearing of the results of this branch of Science on several others, as well as its intrinsic value, is so much greater, that anyone who is at all acquainted with general science, and more particularly with Botany and Geology, must find much to interest him in it. There is no book in the English language which places this really attractive subject before the non-specialist, and to do so is the aim of the present volume. The two excellent English books which we possess, viz. Seward's Fossil Plants (of which the first volume only has appeared, and that ten years ago) and Scott's Studies in Fossil Botany, are ideal for advanced University students. But they are written for students who are supposed to have a previous knowledge of technical botany, and prove very hard or impossible reading for those who are merely acquainted with Science in a general way, or for less advanced students. The inclusion of fossil types in the South Kensington syllabus for Botany indicates the increasing importance attached to palaeobotany, and as vital facts about several of those types are not to be found in a simply written book, the students preparing for the examination must find some difficulty in getting their information. Furthermore, Scott's book, the only up-to-date one, does not give a complete survey of the subject, but just selects the more important families to describe in detail. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Botany IT is customary to place all living beings in either the animal 01 vegetable kingdoms, but in reality a sharp boundary line between animals and plants first becomes possible when they exhibit a complicated structure. In those of more simple organisation all distinctions disappear, and it becomes difficult to define the exact limits of Botany and Zoology. This, in fact, could scarcely be otherwise, as all the processes of life, in both the animal and vegetable kingdoms, are dependent On the same substance, protoplasm. With more complicated organisation, the specific differences increase, and the characteristics distinguishing animal from vegetable life become more obvious. For the present, it must be confessed, the recognition Of an organism, as an animal or a plant, is dependent upon its corre spondence with an abstract idea of what a plant or animal Should be, .based on certain points of agreement between the members of each class. A satisfactory basis for the Separation of all living organisms into the categories of animals or plants can only be obtained when it is shown that all organisms distinguished as animals are in reality genetically connected, and that a similar connection exists between all plants. The proof of this can only be arrived at through the theory OF evolution. From the study of the fossil remains and impressions Of animals and plants, it has been established that in former epochs forms Of life. Differing from those of the present age existed on the earth. It is also generally assumed that all living animals and plants have been derived by gradual modification from previously existing forms. This leads to the further conclusion that those organisms possess ing closely Similar structure, which are united as species in a genus, are in reality related to one another. It is also probable that the union of corresponding genera into one familv and of families into higher groups serves to give expression to a real relationship existing between them.
