This has been the plan adopted for teaching electro therapeutics at the University of Michigan. Every formof electric modality that has any distinctive physiological or therapeutic effect is studied in the laboratory as to its methods of generation, control'and application to the patient. We believe this to be the only practical way for imparting the kind of instruction required for the practice of electro-therapeutics, but in our attempts to develop a naturally progressive and at the same time complete and consistent course of laboratory instruction we have found it a thing of slow growth. This work is intended to give practical instruction covering the indications and use of the various currents in practice; the subjects treated, in the main, are briefly considered, but up to date. An effort has been made to boil down the subject of electrotherapy and to treat it in a manner that it may be understood and made useful not only to every electrotherapist but to the entire medical profession. Electricity has no magic formulas, but is an efficient helpmate in the practice of medicine. The bibliography at the close of the book is not complete. It is impossible to render full acknowledgment to all sources which have assisted me in preparing this work. He rejects the surface theory so far as the animal body is concerned, and, though he passed currents of 3000 milliamperes, he explained their harmlessness by absence of excitation, or, rather, on the hypothesis that these currents exercise, on the nervous centres and muscles, an inhibitory action of the kind studied by Dr. Brown-sequ'ard; and he considers that this inhibitory action is shown by some of the phenomena above described. Electricity was first used as a therapeutic agent about the year 1748. Franklin, ten years later, employed the current for medi cal treatment in paralysis. Electricity was used in a London Hospital in the year 1767. About 1760 the Rev. John Wesley, the famous divine, published a treatise entitled Electricity Made Plain and Useful. In 1807 Sir Humphrey Davy, by means of a powerful voltaic battery, succeeded in decomposing moist potash and obtained metallic potassium at the negative electrode. The discovery of magneto-electricity in 1831, by Faraday, was the milestone that marked another important stage in the progress Of electrical science. The modern dynamo, evolved from Faraday's discovery, furnishes an electric power which costs but little more than steam. The advances in the application Of electricity have been marvelous but as physicians we need concern ourselves only with the advances in electro-therapeutics. Until the past few years a physician who used electrical treatment for disease was in danger Of being classed with quacks and charlatans.
