Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universities, like other industries, are challenged by disruptive market forces. Today there are nearly forty public universities in Australia. Some predict that by 2070 there may be only ten institutions left globally to deliver higher education. Relentless inventiveness and entrepreneurial agendas promise students a world of unbounded study options. In this powerful meditation on the need for institutional diversity, Glyn Davis argues that experimentation, innovation and resilience are the only way the public university will endure.

This book was released on 2004-03-16 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ·What is the policy background to current interest in retention and student success? ·What causes students to leave institutions without completing their programmes? ·How can theory and research help institutions to encourage student success? Retention and completion rates are important measures of the performance of institutions and higher education systems. Understanding the causes of student non-completion is vital for an institution seeking to increase the chances of student success. The early chapters of this book discuss retention and student success from a public policy perspective. The later chapters concentrate on theory and research evidence, and on how these can inform institutional practices designed to enhance retention and success (particularly where students are enrolled from disadvantaged backgrounds). This book draws upon international experience, particularly from the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa and the United States. Retention and Student Success in Higher Education is essential reading for lecturers, support staff, and senior managers in higher education institutions, and for those with a wider policy interest in these matters.

Download or read book Strong Starts, Supported Transitions and Student Success written by Andrew Funston and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shift to mass participation in higher education is a welcome international trend. In Australia the number of young adults attempting a degree course at university has increased by close to twenty five percent in less than a decade. Campuses are becoming more culturally and linguistically diverse. More university students are coming from poorer families and disadvantaged educational backgrounds. The authors of Strong Starts, Supported Transitions and Student Success celebrate the diversity of new university learning communities while recognising the challenges faced by many commencing students. This book presents research findings, strategic thinking and innovative approaches to student transitions and retention at one of Australia’s newer institutions, designated “The University of Opportunity”. Drawing extensively on international scholarship and the work of retention and transition experts in North America, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, the book provides several theoretically-informed case studies, as well as more general discussions and practical advice to academics and professional staff involved in “the first year in higher education”, and especially those practitioners working to enhance “the student experience”.

Book excerpt: First published in 1998. This is Volume XV of twenty-eight in the Sociology of Education series. This is a study with special reference to university entrance written in 1949 which started as an enquiry into the performance of a group of university scholarship holders in their First-Year examinations. It developed into an examination of the transition from school to university and is concerned primarily with the problems of London and the provincial universities, though there is much that is relevant to the problems of universities elsewhere. The investigation originated in the concern which was felt amongst the staffs of universities about the general standard of student attainment.

Book Synopsis Undemocratic Schooling by : Richard Teese
Download or read book Undemocratic Schooling written by Richard Teese and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: -Half the boys living in working-class suburbs to the west and north of Melbourne fail mathematics. Why? -Why are so many young people leaving school early, when there are no jobs for them to go to? -Are boys disadvantaged at school in comparison with girls? -What makes good schools work? -Is the best university one that attracts the top students, or one that offers the best chances for lower-achieving students? This groundbreaking book is based on the largest social survey of secondary education ever undertaken in Australia. It presents a comprehensive picture of who succeeds and who fails at school. Undemocratic Schooling brings together a unique range of information on who our students are, what they want from school, how well they think their schools work, what subjects they study, how well they succeed, and where they end up. It also reveals their larger views on matters such as jobs, careers, marriage and family, the political system and social justice. In its imaginative presentation of the findings of this massive survey, this book sheds new light on inequalities in our education system. It reveals significant new information on: -students' achievements in relation to their attitudes and values -students' perspectives on issues from jobs to discrimination -students' destinations in relation to their backgrounds. The authors offer valuable angles on such topical issues as retention and dropout rates; the relation between poverty and achievement; the gender debate; private versus public schools; and which universities serve which social groups.
Book Synopsis Promoting Access, Increasing Opportunities for University Education by :
Download or read book Promoting Access, Increasing Opportunities for University Education written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was conducted between 1999 and 2002 and follows the academic progress (between 2000 and 2002) of mature-aged students of Education and accounting at the University of Tasmania. The aim was to examine in depth a range of factors which affect the academic achievement of students recruited from disadvantaged areas, many of them mature age students taking up a 'second chance' of higher education. Patterns of recruitment and selection were placed under scrutiny, along with the patterns of continuing support - academic, social and financial. Pathways to higher education through Technical and Vocational Education (TAFE) or Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs were also reviewed through monitoring progress of students who had been granted credit for prior vocational qualifications. The study shows that what happens at enrolment and university entry is less important than the orientation, academic and social support which students receive throughout the course of their studies, and their own aspirations and expectations for themselves. Despite the small number of students involved, the study has widespread practical implications for the increase of opportunity for university education for disadvantaged and mature age students in Australian universities, especially those with a TAFE or VET background.
Book Synopsis Internationalisation and the Marketing of Higher Education. Australian Universities Best Practices by : Michelangelo Balicco

This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professorial Dissertation from the year 2019 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 10, Università degli Studi di Milano, language: English, abstract: This study aims to explore the internationalisation in higher education in Australia. The increasing globalisation and interdependence of world economies, and the revolution in ICTs (information and communication technologies) have made it imperative for universities to be truly international in character and outlook. The result of this study on the Australian educational scenario has revealed that internationalisation of higher education is a complex, multidimensional and often fragmented process that includes different rationales varying greatly according to cultural and economic insights: it ranges from international research collaboration, to horizontal mobility for both international and national students as well as a focus on a more interdisciplinary and international curricula. Overall, by comparison with the other Anglo-Saxon countries, the results of this study have shown that the development of internationalisation in higher education in Australia has three peculiar features: the first is the unambiguously commercial nature, according to which innovative strategies (such as a proper destination branding borrowed from the tourism industry) were put in place through promotional recruiting agencies abroad and other national entities that sponsored a massive participation in student recruitment fairs. Secondly, there was an exponential market growth of non-academic student servicing, which surpassed academic and research capacity: as a result of this marketing and recruitment as well as complimentary services are managed by commercial companies associated with the university. The third and final feature specific to Australia is its ability to be a pioneer in the provision of educational opportunities overseas through the development of offshore campuses particularly active in the Asia-Pacific region, with the aim of awarding students under the foreign university name.

Book Synopsis The New Inheritors by : Madeleine Mattarozzi Laming
Download or read book The New Inheritors written by Madeleine Mattarozzi Laming and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book examines why the majority of Australian school leavers want to go to university and have resisted government attempts to promote alternative forms of tertiary education. The New Inheritors explores differences in young people’s understanding of the purpose of university and their reasons for wanting to enrol. The book reveals that although there has been a general shift in values towards the utilitarian perspective, there is still significant support for the traditional liberal idea of university education as a cultural experience. This support is concentrated in well-educated families, regardless of their financial resources, but there is a substantial number of young people from less well-educated families who have absorbed the liberal perspective. The book begins with an extensive and unique overview of changes in Australian federal government tertiary education policy and changes in the public discourse on education. This overview provides a framework against which differences among today’s students are examined in detail. Drawing on a study of over 200 secondary school students from diverse backgrounds The New Inheritors records their attitudes to university – including access, fees and the role of government – and explores how these are formed by their family backgrounds and influenced by public policy on education. The New Inheritors uncovers the complexity of young people’s attitudes, and what processes occur in the forming and reforming of those attitudes to university and what young people really want from university education. Dr Madeleine Mattarozzi Laming is a Lecturer in Education at Australian Catholic University. She has given numerous conference papers on transition from school to university and teaching students from diverse backgrounds. In 2011 she received an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation for an outstanding contribution to student learning, particularly at the first year.

Book Synopsis Universities in Transition by : Heather Brook
Download or read book Universities in Transition written by Heather Brook and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2014-12 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universities are social universes in their own right. They are the site of multiple, complex and diverse social relations, identities, communities, knowledges and practices. At the heart of this book are people enrolling at university for the first time and entering into the broad variety of social relations and contexts entailed in their ‘coming to know’ at, of and through university. For some time now the terms ‘transition to university’ and ‘first-year experience’ have been at the centre of discussion and discourse at, and about, Australian universities. For those university administrators, researchers and teachers involved, this focus has been framed by a number of interlinked factors ranging from social justice concerns to the hard economic realities confronting the contemporary corporatising university. In the midst of changing global economic conditions affecting the international student market, as well as shifting domestic politics surrounding university funding, the equation of dollars with student numbers has remained a constant, and has kept universities’ attention on the current ‘three Rs’ of higher education — recruitment, retention, reward — and, in particular, on the critical phase of students’ entry into the tertiary institution environment. By recasting ‘the transition to university’ as simultaneously and necessarily entailing a transition of university — indeed universities — and of their many and varied constitutive relations, structures and practices, the contributors to this book seek to reconceptualise the ‘first-year experience’ in terms of multiple and dynamic processes of dialogue and exchange amongst all participants. They interrogate taken-for-granted understandings of what ‘the university’ is, and consider what universities might yet become.
