Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information literacy may be defined as the ability to identify a research problem, decide the kinds of information needed to tackle it, find the information efficiently, evaluate the information, and apply it to the problem at hand. Teaching Research Processes suggests a novel way in which information literacy can come within the remit of teaching faculty, supported by librarians, and reconceived as ‘research processes’. The aim is to transform education from what some see as a primarily one-way knowledge communication practice, to an interactive practice involving the core research tasks of subject disciplines. This title is structured into nine chapters, covering: Defining research processes; Research ability inadequacies in higher education; Research processes and faculty understanding; Current initiatives in research processes; The role of disciplinary thinking in research processes; Research processes in the classroom; Tentative case studies in disciplinary research process instruction; Research processes transforming education; and Resourcing the enterprise. The book concludes by encouraging the reader to implement the teaching of research processes. Engages the domain of teaching faculty rather than librarians only Analyzes the reasons why the research processes concept represents a gap in academia Focuses on research ability as a process that can be taught within disciplines
Book Synopsis Guiding Students Into Information Literacy by : Chris Carlson
Download or read book Guiding Students Into Information Literacy written by Chris Carlson and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers often assume students know how to do research. However, most students lack important information literacy skills and often need guidance in order to be successful researchers. Sometimes the research projects students are assigned are not well devised or planned, and teachers often underestimate the amount of time or effort necessary to complete a project. These difficulties soon become compounded because students often have poor organizational and time management skills, which are essential in producing good research projects. The desire to make the research experience pleasant and worthwhile for students and the teacher who must assess their efforts has led authors Chris Carlson and Ellen Brosnahan to devise a logical system to help students not only gain valuable information literacy and time management skills needed but also to help the instructor have a better handle on what students are doing during the process. Information Literacy takes readers systematically through the management of a research activity, from conception to final product. Each chapter includes handouts that have been used by the authors with actual research assignments, websites for further information, and a bibliography of additional books that support the ideas in the chapter. An appendix with examples of research papers that have been done by the authors' actual students is also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to examine student writing in the context of major changes taking place in today's higher education. For example, students now come to higher education from an increasingly wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, to study in a number of diverse learning environments. Their courses often no longer reflect traditional academic subject boundaries, with their attendant values and norms. there is also an increasing recognition of the importance of lifelong learning, and the necessity for universities to adapt their provision to make it possible for learners to enter and return to higher education at different points in their lives.

Book Synopsis Improving Adult Literacy Instruction by : National Research Council
Download or read book Improving Adult Literacy Instruction written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high level of literacy in both print and digital media is required for negotiating most aspects of 21st-century life, including supporting a family, education, health, civic participation, and competitiveness in the global economy. Yet, more than 90 million U.S. adults lack adequate literacy. Furthermore, only 38 percent of U.S. 12th graders are at or above proficient in reading. Improving Adult Literacy Instruction synthesizes the research on literacy and learning to improve literacy instruction in the United States and to recommend a more systemic approach to research, practice, and policy. The book focuses on individuals ages 16 and older who are not in K-12 education. It identifies factors that affect literacy development in adolescence and adulthood in general, and examines their implications for strengthening literacy instruction for this population. It also discusses technologies for learning that can assist with multiple aspects of teaching, assessment, and accommodations for learning. There is inadequate knowledge about effective instructional practices and a need for better assessment and ongoing monitoring of adult students' proficiencies, weaknesses, instructional environments, and progress, which might guide instructional planning. Improving Adult Literacy Instruction recommends a program of research and innovation to validate, identify the boundaries of, and extend current knowledge to improve instruction for adults and adolescents outside school. The book is a valuable resource for curriculum developers, federal agencies such as the Department of Education, administrators, educators, and funding agencies.

Book excerpt: This collection of 17 papers, presented at a conference in May 1996, documents some of the current thinking about adult literacy education in Great Britain. The first of the three sections of the papers, "Some Context," contains two analyses of the political and economic realities within which potential participants in adult literacy and language education negotiate their opportunities for learning: "Basic Education in the Post-Industrial World: Jobs, Gender, and Citizenship" (Sue Gardener), and "What Refugees Bring to Literacy Classes" (Helen Sunderland). The second section, "Research Perspectives," includes five papers: "Putting the New Literacies into Practice" (David Barton, Mary Hamilton); "Photography in Collaborative Research: 'Insider'/'Outsider' Images and Understandings of Multilingual Literacy Practices" (Rachel Hodge, Kathryn Jones); "Making Sense of Experience: The Role of Narrative in Research and Practice" (Julia Clarke); "Self-Directed Learning: Liberating or Oppressive?: Developing Autonomy in Open Learning" (Chris O'Mahony, Wendy Moss); and "Teach the Mother to Reach the Child?" (Jacqui Armour). The third section, "Students Teaching, Teachers Learning," contains 10 papers that show different strategic responses to learners' interests and address issues of theory and practice that those interests raise for teachers and their managers who seek to improve the quality of adult literacy education. The papers are as follows: "Family Learning in West Glamorgan" (Sandra Morton); "Understanding Nursery Education: A Course for Parents & Careers" (Foufou Savitsky); "ESOL [English for speakers of other languages] and Student Publishing" (Qaisra Ahmad); "The Gatehouse Asian Women's Project" (Tom Woodin); "A Pragmatic Approach to Vocational Literacy" (Audrey Stewart); "Finding a Way In: Back Door Routes to Learning" (Jo Colley); "The Politics of Workplace Literacy" (Fiona Frank, Chris Holland); "Listening and Teaching in Basic Education" (Alison Noel); "The Significance of Student Writing" (Jane Mace); and "RaPAL [Research and Practice in Adult Literacy] 1996: A Turning Point?" Book Synopsis Integrating Content and Language in Higher Education by : Mark Brooke
Download or read book Integrating Content and Language in Higher Education written by Mark Brooke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents research initiatives by tutors involved in a content-based instruction context as part of the University Town writing programme, National University of Singapore, which is an interdisciplinary programme designed to teach first- and second-year undergraduate students how to conduct academic research and write evidence-based research papers. It presents research the tutors conducted within the dual fields of teaching discipline-specific content and developing students’ academic literacy. The book focuses mainly on pedagogy and material development in this context. It shares the tutors' scholarship of teaching and learning experiences from this programme through presenting action research from the classroom, demonstrating constructive cycles of praxis, which are then evaluated using student texts and student feedback. The book draws on academic research literature related to content-based instruction, as well as topics such as facilitating collaborative peer reviews of assignments, and critical thinking pedagogy. It covers how multi-disciplinary or multi-lingual classrooms of this genre can motivate students to conduct and write up research and provides an overview of how both content and academic literacy is combined at a high level of engagement from an Asian context.

Book Synopsis Undergraduate Research in English Studies by : Laurie Grobman
Download or read book Undergraduate Research in English Studies written by Laurie Grobman and published by National Council of Teachers of English (Ncte). This book was released on 2010 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Editors Laurie Grobman and Joyce Kinkead offer a groundbreaking collection of essays that aims to mobilize the profession of English studies to further participate in undergraduate research, which in the past had been reserved for scientific fields. Why shouldn't undergraduates in English studies have the same opportunities as those in the sciences to benefit from undertaking real research that can inform and have an impact on practitioners in the discipline? They should and can, according to editors Laurie Grobman and Joyce Kinkead, who have produced this collection to showcase the first steps being made to integrate undergraduate research into English studies and, even more important, to point the way toward greater involvement. Undergraduate Research in English Studies is a groundbreaking collection that aims to mobilize the profession of English studies to further participate in undergraduate research, an educational movement and comprehensive curricular innovation that is "the pedagogy for the twenty-first century," according to the Joint Statement of Principles composed by the Council on Undergraduate Research and the National Conferences on Undergraduate Research. Students engaged in genuine research gain an insider's understanding of field-specific debates, develop relevant skills and insights for future careers and graduate study, and contribute their voices to creating knowledge through the research process. Some contributors discuss the importance of mentoring, how to conduct research responsibly, and avenues for disseminating research and scholarship locally, regionally, nationally, or internationally. Others provide case studies of undergraduate research in literature and in composition and rhetoric. The volume combines theory and practice, and lays the groundwork for further practice and inquiry, sending forth a call to broaden undergraduate research possibilities in all areas of English.
