Book excerpt: The transition from middle to high school for students is filled with social and academic challenges. Students who do not successfully navigate these obstacles are more likely to drop out of high school resulting in a myriad of negative consequences for them and their communities. Student voice is an important but often overlooked asset in education. Therefore, to design improved transition programs, it is worthwhile to empirically study the student perspective. This study gathers perspectives about the school supports that most contributed to their success in ninth grade from students who did not drop out. Using InQuiry methodology, three distinct viewpoints emerged: Captains, named due to their self-reliance, Passengers who relied on support from school structures, and Crew who thrived due to supportive social network. The findings of this study can be used by school leaders to better understand how to design effective supports for students as they make the important step from middle to high school.

Book excerpt: Science teachers of early adolescents need to cater for their students' needs by employing inclusive strategies which allow all students to participate in science classes. The findings of the study emphasise that the teacher-student relationship, the curriculum, and its implementation are all inter-related, so that when considering the reasons for the changes in students' attitudes to science during the transition from primary to secondary school, no aspect should be considered to act in isolation from the others.

Book excerpt: Students raised in low-income households continue to trail the general student population in attainment of baccalaureate degrees. Despite considerable resources aimed at closing this gap, students among underrepresented minorities, first-in-their-family students, and low-income students are less likely to find success in college. As our educational system demands greater accountability in improving retention and graduation rates, there is a need for further quantitative and qualitative investigation of the path of low-income students. This study focuses on the perceptions these students have of their high school life and how well high school prepared them for postsecondary school/college. Participants were interviewed to share their individual experiences about high school and their college transition challenges. The initial hypothesis - students would identify a particular area of need - was not confirmed. Instead, I found a more general conclusion: that the many variables a student brings to his or her educational journey must each be addressed individually. The study produced several implications for high school and college, particularly that personal connection and powerful student stories must be addressed in the college environment to assist students in connecting with college and remaining in the program to degree objective.

Book excerpt: Changing schools at 11 or 12+ is a critical, often traumatic event in a pupil’s career. Earlier studies had looked at this transitional stage from the schools’ point of view, in the light of institutional aims and objectives. Originally published in 1984, this richly detailed and readable study looks at it from the pupils’ point of view: it illustrates their perceptions of the transfer, their anxieties and their experiences. The book is the result of a research project, in which children transferring from a typical middle school to a typical comprehensive in a Midlands town were observed over a period of eighteen months. The authors reveal various ways in which children adjust to a large, more complex school organisation, to new forms of discipline and authority, and new demands in school work. They emphasise the significance of teenage culture during this period, and identify an important area of interplay between school culture and sub-culture. They pay special attention to gender identities, and the ways in which these affect pupils’ responses to different subjects in the curriculum. Finally, they consider the theoretical and policy implications of their survey, and make positive recommendations for improving school and classroom practice at both primary and secondary level.
