Book excerpt: This study analyzed the perceptions of first-year students living in residence halls at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse had about academics and intellectuality within their communities. The study focused on first-year students living in Coate Hall, a first-year experience hall, and Hutchison Hall, a traditional residence hall. In December 2009, the University Residence Environment Scale (URES) was administered to participating residents from Coate and Hutchison Halls. One hundred and seventy-two residents participated in the study. The results showed that there was a significant difference in perceptions of academic achievement and no significant difference in perceptions on intellectuality between the first-year experience residence hall and the traditional residence hall. Additional findings and recommendations for future research were also discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate student attitudes toward the residence hall program at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. The study attempted to determine whether sex of the resident, class standing of the resident, size of the residence hall, age of the head resident, or employment as a student resident assistant significantly affected student attitudes toward the residence hall program. A twenty per cent random sample of the total population of each of the ten residence halls plus the entire staff of residence assistants were surveyed regarding their attitudes toward the residence hall program that were investigated were general hall living conditions, the individual resident, fellow residents, the hall council, the resident assistant, and the head resident. An analysis of variance was used to determine if any significant differences existed between sub-groups in their attitudes toward the six areas of the residence hall program: 1. Resident assistants were more positive than general residents in their attitudes toward general hall living conditions, themselves as individual residents, the resident assistant, and the head resident. 2. Upperclassmen were more positive than underclassmen in their attitudes toward themselves as individual residents, the head resident, and the resident assistant. 3. Female residents expressed more positive attitudes than male residents toward fellow residents and the hall council. 4. Residents of the larger halls were more positive toward fellow residents than residents of the smaller halls. 5. Residents of the smaller halls expressed more positive attitudes toward the resident assistant than residents of the larger halls. 6. Residents of halls administered by a younger head resident expressed more positive attitudes toward the head resident than residents of the other halls.

It examines any difference in men and women in engagement with living in coeducational or single-sex residence halls on a small, faith-based, liberal arts college in the Midwest. Engagement continues to show value in helping students get the most out of their college experience. This study found no significant difference between coeducational and single-sex residence halls. Also, no difference emerged between men and women populations of both living arrangements. This finding adds to research pertaining to the relationships between place of residence and engagement.

This time spent in the residence halls is a time of transition; living on their own, for what may be the first time for many, can be a struggle. Students are adjusting to a new way of life. These residence halls can have a significant influence on students' perception of sense of community. If positive, this may help increase students retention rate after freshman year. It is important to understand this transition, what aids in the transition, and how the physical environment plays a part in this transition as to create a more positive experience for students to come and stay. The purpose of this study was to explore university dormitory residents' perceptions of common areas, and the role of these common areas in their sense of community and belonging. Sense of community is a strong indicator of a successful transition. This study addressed four research questions: Question #1: What are student's general perceptions of common areas? Question #2: How do students use the common space? Question #3: What are students' perceptions of the function and aesthetics design of the common area? Question #4: How do students' use this space to socialize with others? The method used in this study consisted of semi-structured interviews conducted by the student researcher. The participants were recruited through an email listserv as well as in-person convenience sampling. These interviews were conducted in a private room, audio recorded and transcribed for analysis. The data were coded for significant themes. These themes focused on the use of the common space; the aesthetics as well as the students' overall perception of their transition. We see a connection with the physical environment and the students place attachment in terms of experiences shared with other students, regardless of these experiences' being in work or social situations. This membership is how we see the sense of community develop. The students contributed their successful transition to knowing not only the physical environment as well as in relationships formed on campus. This information may aid student housing personnel as they work with students as well as students time on campus, specifically, the students transitioning to campus living. The data may be used in developing student evaluations as well as updates on the residence hall furnishing and equipment. Understanding more about the student experience and their perception of this experience may aid in creating a better student experience and thus result in higher retention rates.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people travel from wealthier to poorer countries to participate in short-term volunteer programs focused on health services. Churches, universities, nonprofit service organizations, profit-making "voluntourism" companies, hospitals, and large corporations all sponsor brief missions. Hoping to Help is the first book to offer a comprehensive assessment of global health volunteering, based on research into how it currently operates, its benefits and drawbacks, and how it might be organized to contribute most effectively. Given the enormous human and economic investment in these activities, it is essential to know more about them and to understand the advantages and disadvantages for host communities. Most people assume that poor communities benefit from the goodwill and skills of the volunteers. Volunteer trips are widely advertised as a means to "give back" and "make a difference." In contrast, some claim that health volunteering is a new form of colonialism, designed to benefit the volunteers more than the host communities. Others focus on unethical practices and potential harm to the presumed "beneficiaries." Judith N. Lasker evaluates these opposing positions and relies on extensive research—interviews with host country staff members, sponsor organization leaders, and volunteers, a national survey of sponsors, and participant observation—to identify best and worst practices. She adds to the debate a focus on the benefits to the sponsoring organizations, benefits that can contribute to practices that are inconsistent with what host country staff identify as most likely to be useful for them and even with what may enhance the experience for volunteers.
