Book excerpt: This open access book presents a person-centered exploration of student profiles, using variables related to motivation to do school mathematics derived from the IEA’s Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) data. Statistical cluster analysis is used to identify groups of students with similar motivational profiles, across grades and over time, for multiple participating countries. While motivational variables systematically relate to school outcomes, linear relationships can obscure the diverse makeup of student subgroups, each with varying combinations of motivation, emotions, and attitudes. In this book, a person-centered analysis of distinct and meaningful motivational profiles and their differences on sociodemographic variables and mathematics performance broadens understanding about the role that motivation characteristics play in learning and achievement in mathematics. Exploiting the richness of IEA’s TIMSS data from many countries, extracted clusters reveal consistent, as well as certain nuanced patterns that are systematically linked to sociodemographic and achievement measures. Student clusters with inconsistent motivational profiles were found in all countries; mathematics self-confidence then emerged as the variable more closely associated with average achievement. The findings demonstrate that teachers, researchers, and policymakers need to take into account differential student profiles, prioritizing techniques that target skill and competence in mathematics, in educational efforts to develop student motivation.

Many of these factors may not have anything to do with the school at all as research has shown. Perceptions can be either positive or negative, and some students can be very vocal about their feelings. They might comment on how much they enjoy a particular subject, or they might let you know how much they hate the subject as well. It is important to know if students with a positive affect perform better on assessments so that something can be done to help students with negative perceptions change how they feel and potentially do better on assessments The overall goal of this study was to see if the attitudes and perceptions that students have about mathematics influence their ability to achieve a proficient level on district assessments. Additionally, this study looked at if students in different grades have more positive or negative perceptions within a particular grade at different levels of elementary school. This study could be beneficial in taking a closer look at how teachers and parents can help enforce a positive attitude so their students will be more likely to gain proficiency. Students in grades one, three, and five were given a survey with a variety of questions pertaining to how they feel about mathematics. From there, the researcher used the number of points the students received on the survey to classify each student as having a positive or negative affect. The researcher then looked at each student's unit assessments that have been given throughout the school year so far and saw which students were proficient on all the assessments, not proficient on one assessment, or not proficient on one or more of the assessments. Using this information, the researcher determined if there was a connection between students having a positive affect and proficiency. Interviews were also randomly given to ten students in grades one, three, and five respectively to see specifically how some of these perceptions are formed. The research indicates that the affect of students in first grade does not affect how they do on unit assessments. Whether or not they had a positive or negative perception of mathematics did not influence how they did on unit assessments. The data was different for third and fifth graders. The research showed that about half of the students in third that were not proficient on all unit assessments had a negative affect while the other half had a positive affect. The fifth grade data showed similar results to that of the third graders. When comparing students' affects between grades, there were more students with a negative affect in the upper grades (third and fifth); however, there was no statistical difference between the two.

Book excerpt: Mathematical knowledge is vitally important to young children's development, as research demonstrates that it is a strong predictor of their later academic achievement (Duncan et al., 2007). Developing these skills early in life is crucial, as it allows children the opportunity to develop the necessary foundational skills for early schooling instruction. As parents typically serve as the primary instructors for preschool-aged children, outside of child care or preschool programs, researchers must examine the role of parents in their children's emergent math skills in order to provide the best education to these young children. Parental attitudes toward a particular subject have been demonstrated to affect the amount of time they dedicate to teaching their children said subject (e.g., Missall et al., 2015). This thesis sought to examine if parental attitudes towards mathematics could be improved by the use of an adaptive number eBook. The use of technology has been demonstrated to aid young children's ability to learn literacy and math skills (e.g., Shamir, 2009), and the present thesis sought to test the role that parents may play in this context. The eBook provided an electronic space for children to learn math skills using adaptive features, meaning the stimuli increased or decreased in complexity based on children's prior performance. The study examined the effects of the adaptive qualities of the eBook on parental attitudes towards mathematics, and also explored if parents' perceptions of their child's global and specific math skills in numerical comparison increased after reading the number eBooks. Overall, significant differences between eBook types were found for parental perceptions of children's numerical comparison skills, but results indicated no significant differences for parental attitudes toward mathematics or parental perceptions of children's global math skills. Effect sizes indicated that use of the adaptive eBook may have positively impacted parental attitudes in a small way, and may have positively impacted parent perception of children's specific math skills on a large scale. These findings, their implications, and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which socioeconomic factors, demographic factors, parent and student attitudes, and parent involvement were associated with math achievement. Students in Grade 5 were selected as the population for this study. Random sampling procedures were used to select the sample. Students in the sample completed a modified version of the Fennema-Sherman Mathematics Attitudes Scales. Normal Curve Equivalent Scores (NCEs) from the math scales on the TerraNova Standardized Achievement Test were obtained for all students from the individual school records. Parents of the students also participated by answering questions pertaining to their attitudes toward math, their level of involvement in the classroom, and questions that pertained to socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. The findings from this study suggested that each of the six scales used from the Fennema-Sherman Mathematics Attitudes Scales were all significantly associated with the math, computation, and composite scores of the TerraNova Standardized Achievement Test. Family annual income, parents' educational level, and parent involvement were also significantly associated with math achievement. Four of the six attitudinal scales; the Mathematics as a Male Domain, Confidence in Learning Mathematics, Parent, and Mathematics Anxiety Scales, were significantly related to parents' educational level, family's annual income, and gender. Socioeconomic and attitudinal factors were the most powerful predictors of math achievement, while gender and parent involvement were not strong predictors.
