Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine teachers' perceptions of what they do in their institutional settings to create a positive learning environment for troubled youth in their classrooms. More specifically, teachers' descriptions of what they do in their classrooms to foster a positive learning environment were analyzed and reported through a synthesized triadic conceptual framework identified as Bonding, High Expectations and Belief in Success (BHB). This framework blended three theories: Positive Peer Culture, (Vorrath and Brendtro, 2005), Positive Behavior Supports, (Christle, Jolivette, and Nelson, 2005) and Resiliency Theory, (Krovetz 1999). Within the culture of residential facilities, the teachers must implement educational programming to troubled youth who have been placed for non-academic reasons. Understanding what teachers in institutional settings do to create positive learning environments in their classrooms is critical for indentifying factors that influence positive outcome for students in such programs. This study utilized a mixed methods approach involving collection of data at two schools. All teachers within the residential schools at each of two sites of the study were invited to answer survey questions based on the components of the BHB conceptual framework. Teachers were chosen for the interview and Philosophy of Teaching Statement portion of the study using three specific criteria: their principal's recommendation based on daily observation of exemplary teaching practices, the teacher survey answers which reflected this study's conceptual framework, and nomination as a school district Teacher of the Year candidate or other peer recognition program within the last five years. Data analysis revealed that there was significant consensus among the teacher participants about factors perceived as powerfully influential in creating a positive learning environment for students. Consistent with prior research, these factors included providing a classroom atmosphere that supports positive peer interactions, high expectations for student success, promoting students taking responsibility for their own actions, relationship building and creating an environment of trust and respect. Recommendations for practice and future research were offered.

Although the concept has ancient roots and the term has existed in Western societies since the 1970s, only recently has it gained general public recognition. In schools, RJ’s popularity is rising world-wide. In fact, education is the fastest growing area for the practice of RJ. Despite an increasing number of schools embracing the approach, it is not clear what educational RJ practitioners are trying to achieve. Adult Intentions, Student Perceptions: How Restorative Justice is Used in Schools to Control and to Engage focuses on the use of RJ in one school in Scotland and one in Canada. While important to understand the intentions of educators in using RJ in schools, those aims must be examined alongside the actual impact that such practices have on students. RJ can be understood and experienced in dramatically different ways by those implementing it. For some, RJ is about creating an environment of and for student engagement that challenges traditional systems of discipline and facilitates learning. The student experience relayed in this book shows that RJ can as readily be mobilized to create classroom environments of social control (where students are taught obedience and compliance, and authority and hierarchy are reinforced). Reimer argues that RJ, by itself, does not guarantee certain qualities of relationship, but RJ does allow us to examine relational qualities and ask questions of how school relationships are used to engage and/or control students.

The introduction of more rigorous standards high-stakes testing, and an increasing global economy all drive the need to develop skills that will support students’ knowledge and work successes. However, classrooms today look much like they did at the beginning of the 20th century. This study seeks to describe how the nontraditional classroom environments in one school impacted students and teachers. Using qualitative data sources (observations, artifacts, interviews, and focus groups), the case study examined the perceptions of teachers and students regarding nontraditional learning environments. Fourteen themes emerged from the data including; (a) ownership; (b) comfort; (c) confidence; (d) teacher personalities and the personality of space; (e) collaboration and communication; (f) engagement; (g) culture of learning; (h) formative assessment; (i) differentiation; (j) movement; (k) flexible use of space; (l) constant change; (m) support; and (n) norms. Further analysis revealed these themes to be more broadly categorized into the following categories: (a) cultural components; (b) learning components; and (c) physical aspects. The analysis of the data revealed that both students and teachers perceive a positive impact from the nontraditional classroom environment.
