Book excerpt: Fridays were washday in my house. It normally took eight five-gallon buckets of water just to fill the washing machine with enough water for one load of clothes. With eleven children to wash for, this process took several hours. We owned an old wringer washing machine that would squeeze water out of the clothes when placed between the two rolling pins, which were located at the top of the washing machine. The washing machine was very dangerous to operate and, therefore, no one was allowed near it except for my mother. One day, while Mom was in the process of doing her weekly washing, my younger brothers, Roosevelt and Jeffery, were fighting in the backyard. Mom heard the noise and went to break up the fight. While she was gone, I decided to help her out with the clothes. I had been warned by Mom to never go near the washing machine. But being the hardheaded child that I was, do you think I listened? I think not. I took out a blouse that was washing in the water and placed it in-between the two rolling pins. Lo and behold, my arm got caught in the wringers. You would think that I would have had enough common sense to let go of the blouse, but no, not me. All I could think of was that my arm was gonna fall off. I was too scared to yell for help because I knew I would be in big trouble once Mom caught me meddling with the washing machine. Luckily, Mom came back into the house just in time to unplug the electric plug from the outlet before by arm was completely under the wringer. Of course after I was freed I started to cry. I had to think of something quick in order to save my behind, so I told Mom I was trying to help her out with the laundry so that she didn’t have to work so hard. It worked. She felt sorry for me and I was spared a whipping that day. When it was time to take our baths we had to fill the aluminum five-foot tub my dad had purchased from the hardware store with ten five-gallon buckets of water. We then had to get the help of another person to lift the tub onto the top of the wood stove so that that water could be heated. We normally took our baths right there in the kitchen. There was no door separating the kitchen from the living room, so when we bathed we had to hang a bed sheet in front of the opening. All eleven of the children had to share the same bath water. The oldest child was usually the first one allowed to bathe and then the rest followed by age.

Surveys show that most people claim a lack of self-control was their reason for relapsing back to old bad habits. Although we believe in miraculous change as Christians, the church is often notorious for creating faith expectations that distort and skew the psychology of achieving lasting sobriety and weight loss goals. The problem is that cogent observations of our compulsive behaviors aren't always entirely rational. We underestimate and remain unaware of factors controlling our behavior. We have influences, biases, preferences, triggers, and traumas that cannot easily be undone. We overestimate our rational ability, failing to understand, actually ignoring our irrational selves. Although Jesus came to save us, his most important work was his efforts to reset our patterns of thought. Quite simply, he came to change our thinking! This book will examine psychological disciplines and techniques in our journey to break free from those habitual behavior cycles and achieve transformative release.

Book excerpt: “I am stuck in the mud and need help to get out.” Represent God as holding us up through life problems and moving us along on our journey through life. The Lord while I was in the mud was with me and he carried my burdens, pain, past hurts, and disappointments upon Himself. Meaning the weight, I felt internally is from the devastating blows of life experiences. The whole point of being on a journey and getting struck in the mud is learning to love yourself with your imperfections because God does Love us.

Moments from her small but pivotal role in A Very Crowded House, Harriet "Harry" Smith begins her own story where an Ivy League education, her wit, and talented two hands make no promises, least of all the promise of a happily-ever-after. A typically tough private investigator and criminology professor, Harry Smith distracts herself from heartbreak by diving headlong into her latest surveillance job. On a steamy New York City night, she sets out on foot, cocksure and reckless, landing face to face with Trey Popov, a serious rising star in the Trubetzkoy crime family whose eyelashes just might be worth killing for. She escapes the verboten interaction but when the two meet again, Harry plunges undercover as a wholesome schoolteacher who turns Trey's head despite his compulsion to climb the criminal ladder. Harry's unconventional, clandestine scheme and forbidden attraction combust in a violent disaster. All she can do is work toward justice for her murdered police detective-dad. Along the way, she hopes to rescue the good, bad guy too far down the wrong road to be saved. For Harry, doing the right thing is also the hardest thing, but crossing some lines isn’t in your DNA when you bleed blue. Devastated by heartache, goaded by ambition, and blinded by attraction, Harry's allegiances falter, and the differences between academic theory and real-life prove that no one makes it out unchanged. Hell, some don't make it out at all.

For inexperienced, nerdy Tyler, this is not a common occurrence, but it’s even stranger because Shay insists that she’s from 2006. Of course Tyler doesn’t believe her, but once she proves it, they strike a deal: Tyler will try to help get Shay back to 2006 if Shay helps him become more popular. But the more time Shay spends in 1978, the more she likes it. And while she helps Tyler with the popular crowd, she also wreaks havoc by going out with his worst enemy, making over his sister and helping his mother get a job as a cafeteria worker—at his school! Can Tyler get Shay home before his life is completely turned upside down? Publishers Weekly gave D. L. Garfinkle a Flying Start for Storky, praising its "wry outlook" and "lovable hero" in a starred review. Book excerpt: Joe Bennett, Dixie Mae Crandall, Hattie Cooper, and Clarence Cobb are hardly exemplary citizens, but they color the pages of this book with recognizable humanity. Thornburg, Indiana, is the kind of town in which such characters are not only tolerated but accepted as part of the scenery. Their lives intertwine, sometimes in spite of their intentions. Often against the odds they support and help one another to greater hope and a better life. Too involved with each other's business to be objective, they nevertheless regard one another with tolerance or, at their best, with love and admira-tion. With no two people alike, they form a mosaic of American life on a small scale, a kind of confusion which, as E.B White has noted, "makes a democracy so lovable and so frightening." You will likely find people you have known--or perhaps yourself--in these stories.

Book excerpt: DIVDIVA harrowing exploration of one of the country’s most troubling hidden shames: the widespread neglect of disabled children by the institutions that have sworn to protect them/divDIV Four-fifths of American children with serious mental health problems receive no professional treatment whatsoever. They are the product of an overextended and often neglectful system that, as Lee Gutkind writes, has reached the level of insanity. Following the stories of three children—Daniel, Meggan, and Terri—Stuck in Time chronicles the tragedies and injustices wrought not only by the deficiencies of the mental healthcare system, but by government policymakers who have failed to address the problem. Through these children and their families, Gutkind explores mental illness as both a scientific and social issue, from the harsh economic realities of supporting a disabled child to the immense difficulty of finding a suitable counselor./divDIV Written with passion and piercing detail, Stuck in Time is a poignant examination of three families fighting against impossible circumstances, and of a system too inflexible to accommodate the helpless victims it is meant to support./divDIV/div/div
