Book excerpt: In this book Walter Albritton shares the story of his wife Dean’s suffering and death — and invites us to walk with him on his journey through the valley of sorrow. In these pages you will feel Walter’s agony and joy, his despair and hope as he walks us through his struggle with grief. While Dean was hospitalized with a broken hip in October, 2020, she was diagnosed with dementia. She spent two weeks in rehab for her hip, under strictly limited visitation due to the Coronavirus. She didn't make much progress. Finally, the rehab staff decided to simply teach her how to use a wheelchair and sent her home. Back home, she continued to complain of pain in her stomach so Walter returned her to the hospital where she tested positive for COVID-19 and was quarantined on a wing for Coronavirus patients for 14 days, with zero visitation. After the 14 days, doctors informed Walter that there was no more the hospital could do and that Dean had terminal illness, so Walter brought Dean home under the care of family and hospice. Five days later, surrounded by her family, her body died as her spirit moved through the thin veil separating earth from heaven.

Book excerpt: Surviving the Grief Cave is a moving and true story about one man's journey through deep grief and loss in search of new life, love, and faith. Part 1 introduces Bob, Annie and Stephen, a family of three who are stricken by a life-threatening cancer diagnosis into their lives. They battle through dashed hopes and prayers, drug addiction and eventually death, which leads into the dark, lonely, and disorienting grief cave. There Bob confronts his burning anger toward a seemingly absent God and a crisis of faith in which he questions everything he believes. Although Bob's struggles deepen, he begins to find a way forward. Part 2 chronicles Bob's spiritual odyssey as he walks the Camino de Santiago in Spain, a pilgrimage in which he hopes to find some clarity, peace, and direction. It's here where he meets courageous and kind souls from all over the world who, through their own stories and journeys, bring him insight and encouragement. And it's on the solitary paths of the Camino where he is guided in mystical ways he couldn't have imagined. Part 3 begins with Bob's return, only to discover he didn't return home at all, and that his journey was far from over. He soon confronts an identity crisis in which the question: "Who am I now?" drives him to undertake another quest, like a second Camino, but internally. Here he encounters the person he had ignored for his entire life - himself. He makes other discoveries, including a key which may unlock the door to a new future, and a promising new relationship with someone he had already met. But what about finding a new home? And a new life? Not one free from grief, but one with love and connection. This is a true story of rebirth that new life can be found through struggle, grief, and loss - one full of love, renewed faith, and hope.

Grief must like silence; the mere whisper of a cry or hint of a tear and Grief makes its presence known. Silence is a megaphone for Grief. A constant that is a deafening reminder of what I am missing. Yet, I find at times it also promotes a quietness with my Lord. Somehow I need to find a way to cherish the solitude in a positive way. "Proving once again that God's light is brightest when our hour is darkest, Walking through the Valley of Tears is one man's surprising discovery of unending grace at his time of greatest grief. This is a must read for anyone experiencing loss or needing affirmation of God's limitless love." -Rosemary Clair, author of Heir of Earth "When your body is exhausted and your soul is parched, you can find unexpected comfort, nurture, rest, and renewal in the darkness of the valley. Buddy McElhannon reminds us that resources are abundant in the valley as the living water pours forth through tears and grief gives way to the riches only heartache can cultivate. Heartwarming, honest, and hopeful, Buddy gently invites us all to journey together with Christ through the depths of the valley and introduces us to good soil, calm water, and the protected canopy that God provides so we can once again shout with joy from the mountaintop. I promise that Buddy will be a helpful guide as you find strength in weakness, hope in despair, and joy in journey while Walking through the Valley of Tears." -Reverend Catherine Boothe, United Methodist minister and former hospital chaplain

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Christians, we know that God is in control and that it is through Christ that we find both salvation and peace. Yet the world is still full of trials and tribulations, and there are many ways in which we can be robbed of this peace. So when facing the darkness, where do we turn to find the light? How can we preserve the peace that passes all understanding? In Peace That Passes All Understanding, author Jim Rannells shares the heartbreaking story of his sons suicide and the sickness and deep horror and grief that followed. Yet from his tragedy he would find the peace that passes all understanding, and his trust in God would become solidified in faith. With a more complete spiritual view, Jim shows how the horror of his loss contains so much deep joy and peacebecause Christ with outstretched arms is standing in that picture. No matter what life throws at you, and no matter the losses you incur, Christ is always ready to meet your needs and provide you with hope, peace, and even joy. Even in the darkest times, lasting peace through Christ is achievable. It is true that time stands still for significant moments in our lives. A second can seem to last an eternity when, from one monumental experience, a torrent of separate emotions comes into our minds. I do not think I could fully describe what a pistol to the head does when it is fired, with the traumatic carnage from a bullet entering and leaving the skullcoupled with the fact that this was my own flesh and blood who was sitting there on his bed. I dont think there was a single negative human emotion absent in me in that very moment, including a violent, physical revulsion. My picture in my mind that morning was one of physical sickness and deep horror, and certainly the ugliness of death. Now, with a more completed, spiritual view, that picture includes so much deep joy and peace, because Christ with outstretched arms is standing in that picture. This story has a happy, joyful ending, so I encourage the reader to read on. From my tragedy, I found the peace that passes all understanding, and my trust in God is more solid. It is my deep desire to continue to learn of Him.

Book excerpt: This year-long devotional invites you into simple, everyday practices and Scriptural truths to bring you hope in the midst of suffering and loss. “A stunning resource for anyone with fresh or lingering grief who doesn’t feel like they can even lift their head some days. This beautiful, everyday read has nourished my soul.”—Lisa Whittle, speaker, podcast host, and bestselling author of The Hard Good Whether your sorrow is recent, you’ve long felt the pain of a loved one’s absence, or you’re lamenting a difficult situation, this book is an honest companion, offering validation for the hard days and support through the psychological stages of grief. Author Mattie Jackson draws from her experience of grieving the sudden death of her young husband to walk with you from a place of heartache to one of healing and peace. Each one-page devotion provides a daily reminder that God is near to the brokenhearted, His mercies are never- ending, and He can be trusted. Along with helpful reflection questions and gentle prayers, the entries show you how to engage four essential practices on your journey: • Wail for what you’ve lost to overcome feelings of denial. • Connect with the world around you to defend against isolation. • Worship with honesty to push away bitterness and doubt. • Hope for your future to guide you through despair and toward acceptance. These devotions honor our human fragility and direct us to the God who helps us navigate our pain and restores our hearts. There are tears to be shed and is hope to be found even here in the valley.

Book excerpt: This book is not about religion, yet I would not be able to tell the story if we left out the most important part of how Grant was able to get through those tough times. Scripture is quoted in this book. Without Grant knowing Jesus and having a personal relationship with Him, it could have been a different outcome. After all, he knows about grief and sorrow as he experienced himself the day upon the cross when he called out to his father. "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" So for anyone who doesn't know Jesus as there Saviour, turn to the back of this book if you would like to know Him. I have written a simple prayer for you to say and may you experience the freedom Grant did even while going through tragedy, for Jesus will never forsake you, just keep your eyes on Him for he is the way the truth and life everlasting. Always remember God made us. Take a look inside and see the person you were created to be. So if you're keen, let's go and start the journey so grab a drink, put your feet up and let's get closer to our Jesus. After all, that is why He paid the price. There is no intention to convert you, just be open and you too will find Jesus real and will live a more purpose filled, peaceful, powerful, fulfilled life. In this story, Damion Grant's son is referred to as Dame.

A Landscape of the Soul chronicles Grant Keller's profound struggle with grief as he faces the bitter anguish of the loss of his only son. Grant is not a psychiatrist, therapist or grief councilor; he is just one of us -tested hard by loss. Grant used the clear, evocative power of poetry to understand the grieving process, learn to accept loss, and embrace the healing powers of grief. These thoughtful poems are wonderfully accessible and unpretentious. They have the unique ability to pull you into the grief experience so you can share the multifaceted emotions of loss, grief, and transformation from a safe distance. You will join him, not as a voyeur, but as a trusted companion in this celebration of empathy and compassionate sharing. Travel with Grant as he takes you on a tour through the way stations of loss, grief and recovery. Discover the lessons and insights he gained in his grieving time. Learn to walk these dark paths so you will never lose your way when challenged by your own, inevitable losses. To love is to eventually know loss of one form or another. A candle divides the darkness, only for its time; but time, you will find, is compassion. Grant's poems capture the intense emotional states of bereavement that stun and change us, but they also explain how the grief process heals us. Share with him the tremendous shock and denial that destroyed his faith and stripped away all trust in his cherished beliefs. Experience his deep soul-searing anger mixed with rage, hatred and a fierce desire for vengeance; the deadening wool of his depression and the abandonment of despair; his battle with the twin poisons of guilt and shame - guilt as a father for failing to protect his son and deep shame for blaming his son for leaving him behind. Visit his tearful wailing agony when he mourns his son's death, and his silent introspection when sorrow drives him deep within to search for answers. He shares all these events and feelings unflinchingly so you can taste them, experience them, and find comfort in knowing they can be survived. Grief is not all storm and dark sorrow, it also brings healing and recovery. Continue your journey through this changed landscape, going beyond grief and into the commonwealth of transformation. Share Grant's experiences of rebirth and drink in the refreshing emotions of happiness, joy and love. Savor the sweet emotions that elevate us and demonstrate our wonderful resilience to the trials of grief; the quiet moments of peace, humor, and wry observation hidden in the depths of pain. Feel the comfort Grant gained in his growing acceptance of loss; his excitement when he discovered the satisfaction and freedom of his transformed life. Taste the exquisite joy he found when trust and faith were restored and he finally learned how to love himself, and how to share love. His poems sing exaltation of the healing power of love that is our source, our sustenance and our unity. Grant guides you safely through the pitfalls of grief, revealing landmarks that will lead you surely forward on your own journey to acceptance and beyond. Learn how to unloose the bindings and snares of the past that are hidden in our shadows and emerge from grief with a greater understanding of your true self. One of the gifts of grief was the elixir Grant found in the depths of sorrow. When overcome by the pain of loss, he softened pain by invoking memories of what he gained by sharing love. Grant learned how to hack the very process of grief and use it to transform his life, find happiness, and love. This is the first of a series of self help books that teach how to hack grief and discover the hidden treasures buried within you. Valuable gifts wait for us when grief is done. There is joy in the heart of sorrow. It is your birthright, a gift of love granted to you by virtue of your existence. Welcome to the journey of your lifet

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The journey through the valley of the shadow of death does not end when a loved one dies ... but rather is just beginning. How long will you linger down in the valley? How long until healing comes? How long will the pain and loneliness smother your heart and spirit? How long until God speaks peace and healing, learning and growth to your soul? The answer, just like the experience of the journey itself, is different for everyone. Walk through the valley with the author as she travels through memories, emotions, and questions. She shares her questions, her anger, her slowly growing understanding and changes, to offer guidance on your personal path through the valley. Just as she learned, the deepest pain comes in the darkest moment of the night. Cry out to God ... and before you know it, your tears will fade to sweet rest and peace, and joy will come in the morning. * * * * * "Down in the Valley" is an Amazing Book"! Out of her personal experience of enjoying a 40 year genuine love relationship with a spouse, then experiencing the despair and agony of widowhood, Dr. Thomas has produced a tender message of honesty, hope, and healing in dealing with grief. Having endured the loss of a beloved son, I can identify with Dr. Thomas as she expresses the pain of grief; but more importantly, the triumph of healing that comes through having a personal relationship with God. Therefore, I believe that anyone facing the anguish of loss and bereavement can benefit from this manuscript, if they embrace the hope that is revealed within its pages.
