Book excerpt: Background: Nursing leadership plays an essential role in organizational growth and is critical to improving patient care experience, quality improvement, financial productivity, and strategic growth of the organization. With the current nursing shortage, the nurse leadership pool is narrow and may present a problem for healthcare organizations. Having a strategic plan is crucial in developing future leaders and having a succession planning strategy. It is vital to foster and develop nurse leaders and nurses through mentorship to ensure adequate performance, succession plans for future nurse leaders, and the retention of current nurse leaders.Purpose: This project aimed to establish a pilot study to explore the preliminary effect of implementing a structured mentoring experience for nurse leaders utilizing the Transformational Leadership framework and the impact on leaders' effectiveness' performance.Objectives: The objectives include identifying the critical elements for a structured mentoring program for Nurse Leaders utilizing the transformational leadership framework. Evaluate the impact of the mentoring program on leadership and the leaders' effectiveness; determine the efficacy of the transformational leadership platform in support of a structured mentorship program supporting nursing leadership. Measure outcomes that reflect the impact of leaders' effectiveness using a structured mentoring process. Evaluate the "Structure Mentoring Experience" and its ability to provide sufficient structure and guidance for implementing formal mentoring programs in healthcare organizations.Methods: The study was piloted in a large healthcare organization located in the North Texas metroplex. Quantitative quasi-experimental designs were used to analyze the data.Results: The pilot was applicable and captured the structured mentoring process of the nurse leaders. The pilot study provided support for structured mentoring and for further studies to be conducted. Conclusions: The purpose of the pilot study is to provide a structured mentoring experience utilizing the Transformational Leadership framework and the impact of the effectiveness of leaders' performance to impact the effectiveness of leaders' performance. For the healthcare system to have an adequate pipeline of nurse leaders, an investment must be made in the current nurse leaders, and the current nurse leaders can mentor future leaders.
