Book Synopsis Environmental Statistics by : Gregory R. Bock
Download or read book Environmental Statistics written by Gregory R. Bock and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental statistics is a rapidly growing discipline that is important not only as a division of professional and academic statistics, but also in the accumulation of data on environmental effects and in the formulation of environmental policy by government agencies. This book features contributions from policy makers, scientists actively involved in collection of data, and professional, academic and government statisticians. These explore the interfaces between the different areas of application of environmental statistics and consider the future applications of methods arising from this discipline. Some of the chapters deal specifically with environmental models and methods. Here, the contributors explain specialized statistical techniques that have been developed for analysing environmental data and mathematical models that have been applied to the problem of integrating large amounts of environmental data into a coherent picture of particular environmental systems. Several of the contributions deal specifically with the problems involved in co-ordinating data collection over large geographical areas and over many dimensions of measurement. Finally, the book discusses the problems of formulating specific environmental policies given the nature of the information that has been made available using environmental statistical methods.
Book Synopsis Using the Right Environmental Indicators by : Julie L. Hass
Download or read book Using the Right Environmental Indicators written by Julie L. Hass and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2012-07-20 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding and using indicators that are most suited for tracking progress, raising awareness and supporting analysis is a challenge. Indicators need to be used in appropriate contexts and should ideally be fit-for-purpose. For example, indicators which are best used for awareness-raising cannot be used for monitoring policy goals. This report presents a short review of different indicators typically encountered by environmental policy makers. General advice is provided regarding their uses. In the second part of the report, an overview of the environmental-economic accounting work of the Nordic statistical institutes is presented. Lessons learned from the development of these accounts as well as ideas for future work are described. These types of environmental accounts provide a framework for developing information about the connections between the economy and the environment. The study was commissioned by the Nordic Council of Ministers and conducted by the national statistical agencies in the Nordic countries, led by Statistics Norway and Statistics Sweden.

Book Synopsis State of the Environment Reporting by : P. C. Rump
Download or read book State of the Environment Reporting written by P. C. Rump and published by Incumbent. This book was released on 1996 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good environmental information is essential for effective sustainable development policy-making and action planning. Accurate information increases the chances for correct decisions. This does not guarantee a healthier environment, but its absence seriously impedes decisions which would lead to a sustainable future. Ideally, local, sectoral, corporate, national, regional, and global reports should complement one other, using, for example, common spatial units and databases. In reality comprehensive and integrated information is often not available for today's decision makers. The Source Book is designed to help to harmonize environmental reporting by encouraging the development of standard methods, practices, and terminology. It evaluates and compares alternative approaches for the development, production, and dissemination of environmental information, and combines the collective experience of environmental reporting, covering all aspects of reporting from user needs to data supply.
Book Synopsis Ecological Indicators for the Nation by : National Research Council
Download or read book Ecological Indicators for the Nation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-04-12 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental indicators, such as global temperatures and pollutant concentrations, attract scientists' attention and often make the headlines. Equally important to policymaking are indicators of the ecological processes and conditions that yield food, fiber, building materials and ecological "services" such as water purification and recreation. This book identifies ecological indicators that can support U.S. policymaking and also be adapted to decisions at the regional and local levels. The committee describes indicators of land cover and productivity, species diversity, and other key ecological processesâ€"explaining why each indicator is useful, what models support the indicator, what the measured values will mean, how the relevant data are gathered, how data collection might be improved, and what effects emerging technologies are likely to have on the measurements. The committee reviews how it arrived at its recommendations and explores how the indicators can contribute to policymaking. Also included are interesting details on paleoecology, satellite imagery, species diversity, and other aspects of ecological assessment. Federal, state, and local decision-makers, as well as environmental scientists and practitioners, will be especially interested in this new book.
