Book Synopsis Self-sustaining Mechanisms of Wall Turbulence by : Ronald Lee Panton
Download or read book Self-sustaining Mechanisms of Wall Turbulence written by Ronald Lee Panton and published by Computational Mechanics. This book was released on 1997 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is wall turbulence self-sustaining? In this book well-regarded researchers not only discuss what they know and believe, but also speculate on ideas that still require numerical or experimental testing and verification. An initial brief history of boundary layer structure research is followed by chapters on experimental information and specific topics within the subject. There are then sections on computational aspects.

Book Synopsis Analyses of Turbulence in the Neutrally and Stably Stratified Planetary Boundary Layer by : Cedrick Ansorge

This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a study of strong stratification and turbulence collapse in the planetary boundary layer, opening a new avenue in this field. It is the first work to study all regimes of stratified turbulence in a unified simulation framework without a break in the paradigms for representation of turbulence. To date, advances in our understanding and the parameterization of turbulence in the stable boundary layer have been hampered by difficulties simulating the strongly stratified regime, and the analysis has primarily been based on field measurements. The content presented here changes that paradigm by demonstrating the ability of direct numerical simulation to address this problem, and by doing so to remove the uncertainty of turbulence models from the analysis. Employing a stably stratified Ekman layer as a simplified physical model of the stable boundary layer, the three stratification regimes observed in nature— weakly, intermediately and strongly stratified—are reproduced, and the data is subsequently used to answer key, long-standing questions. The main part of the book is organized in three sections, namely a comprehensive introduction, numerics, and physics. The thesis ends with a clear and concise conclusion that distills specific implications for the study of the stable boundary layer. This structure emphasizes the physical results, but at the same time gives relevance to the technical aspects of numerical schemes and post-processing tools. The selection of the relevant literature during the introduction, and its use along the work appropriately combines literature from two research communities: fluid dynamics, and boundary-layer meteorology.

Book Synopsis Natural Convective Heat Transfer from Horizontal and Near Horizontal Surfaces by : Patrick H. Oosthuizen
Download or read book Natural Convective Heat Transfer from Horizontal and Near Horizontal Surfaces written by Patrick H. Oosthuizen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-21 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with a natural convective heat transfer situation of significant practical importance that has not been adequately dealt with in existing texts or widely available review papers: natural convective heat transfer from horizontal and near horizontal surfaces. The aim is to provide the reader with an understanding of past studies of natural convective heat transfer from horizontal surfaces and a more detailed review of contemporary studies. The more recent work deals with heat transfer from surfaces that have more complex shapes than previously considered, with heat transfer in situations in which laminar, transitional, and turbulent flow occur; in situations where the surface is inclined at a relatively small angle to the horizontal; and in situations where there is a covering surface above the heated surface. The authors further present methods for predicting heat transfer rates in all of the situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1964 the main function of the European Mechanics Committee has been to arrange Euromech Colloquia. These are three- or four-day meetings for the discussion of current research on a specified and relatively narrow topic in mechanics, by about 50 specialists chosen for their active involvement in research in that topic. The organization of each Euromech Colloquium is entrusted by the Committee to one or two selected scientists of repute in the field, and these organizers are enjoined to achieve a friendly and informal forum for discussion, with a minimum of paper work and expenditure. Over 220 Euromech Colloquia have been held since 1964 (about 40 each in France, West Germany and Britain and the remainder in 18 countries in both western and eastern Europe) on a wide range of topics drawn from the mechanics of solid materials, hydrodynamics, gas dynamics and mechanical systems. The Committee believes that collectively, Euromech Colloquia have made a significant contribution to the exchange of ideas on topics in mechanics within Europe and have thereby helped to overcome the barriers to easy scientific communication in that sorely divided continent. A few years ago the European Mechanics Committee turned its atten tion to the possible need for European conferences on a larger scale than Euromech Colloquia.
