This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the NATO-Advanced Study Institute on the "Spectroscopy of Biological Molecules", which took place on July 4-15, 1983 in Acquafredda di Maratea, Italy. The institute concentrated on three main subiects: the structure and dymanics of DNA, proteins, and visual and plant pigments. Its timeliness has been linked to rapid advances in certain spectroscopic techniques which yielded a consider able amount of new information on the structure and inter actions of biologically important molecules. Among these techniques Fourier transform infrared, resonance and surface enhanced 'Raman spectroscopies, Raman microscopy and micro probing, time resolved techniques, two photon and ultrafast electronic, and C-13, N-15 and P-31 NMR spectroscopies and kinetic and static IR difference spectroscopy receiced a great deal of attention at the Institute. In addition, an entirely new technique, near-millimeter-wave spectroscopy has been presented and discussed. Two introductory quantum chemical lectures, one on the structure of water in DNA, and another pn the energy bands in DNA and proteins set the stage for the experimentally oriented lectures that followed. Fundamental knowledge on hydrogen bonding was the topic of two other lectures. Panel discussions were held on the structure and confor mations of DNA, metal-DNA adducts and proteins and on visual pigments. Many scientists who normally attend different conferences and never meet, met at Aquafredda di Maratea. We feel, that at the end of our Institute a synthetic vi~w emerged on the powerful spectroscopic and theoretical methods which are now available for the study of biological molecules.
Book Synopsis Supramolecular Structure and Function by : Greta Pifat
Download or read book Supramolecular Structure and Function written by Greta Pifat and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The molecular basis of life has been a rapidly growing field of science. There is perhaps no other field where such diverse profiles of scientists, ranging from applied mathematicians and theoretical physicists to experimental biologists and medical doctors (physicians), are compelled to communicate and even to col laborate. This diversity makes the exchange of information richer but at the same time more cumbersome. One way to facilitate the exchange of information and to overcome the barriers between the different languages used by physicists, chemists and biologists is to organize a meeting on a subject of common interest. A par ticularly suitable form of such a meeting for younger scientists is a school at an undergraduate or postgraduate level. This volume contains a collection of lectures presented at the International Summer School in Biophysics, held under the title "Supramolecular Structure and Function" in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia, in September 1981. The topics discussed at the school were inter- and intramolecular interactions in biological systems, and structure, organization and function of biological macromole cules and supramolecular structures. Although not all the lectures could be prepared in a written form on time for publication, we hope that the present volume contains valuable up-to-date infor mation on various aspects of the molecular basis of life. We wish to express our gratitude to the eminent authors and to state that, having received so much valuable assistance from them, we as editors can only attach our names to apologies for any erro~s that may remain.
Book Synopsis Structure and Dynamics of Nucleic Acids, Proteins, and Membranes by : E. Clementi

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects a number of the invited lectures and a few selected contrib utions presented at the International Symposium on Structure and Dynamics of Nucleic Acids, Proteins and Membranes held August 31st through September 5th, 1986, in Riva del Garda, Italy. The title of the conference as well as a number of the topics covered represent a continuation of two previous conferences, the first held in 1982 at the University of California in San Diego, and the second in 1984 in Rome at the Accademia dei Lincei. These two earlier conferences have been documented in Structure and Dynamics: Nucleic Acids and Proteins, edited by E. Clementi and R. H. Sarma, Adenine Press, New York, 1983, and Structure and Motion: Membranes, Nucleic Acids and Proteins, edited by E. Clementi, G. Corongiu, M. H. Sarma and R. H. Sarma, Adenine Press, New York, 1985. At this conference in Riva del Garda we were very hesitant to keep the name of the conference the same as the two previous ones. Indeed, a number of topics discussed in this conference were not included in the previous ones and even the emphasis of this gathering is only partly reflected in the conference title. An alternative title would have been Structure and Dynamics of Nucleic Acids, Proteins, and Higher Functions, or, possibly, "higher components" rather than "higher functions.

Book Synopsis Design and Synthesis of Organic Molecules Based on Molecular Recognition by : Georges van Binst

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A topic for a Solvay Conference should be general enough to conform with the great tradition of previous conferences. On the other hand it should not be so broad that it can not be covered during the limited time of the conference. After discussion of several such topics, "Design and Synthesis of Organic Molecules Based on Molecular Recognition" was chosen. According to Albert Einstein we live in an era of perfect methods and confused aims. For example in organic chemistry the known synthetic methods allow us to prepare an astronomical number of compounds; the gap between the possible and the relevant becomes larger every day. After discovery and classification of the main types of reactions, the study of the selectivity of reactions becomes of paramount importance. One can learn quite a lot from Nature, which uses molecular recognition to achieve selec tivity in a degree so far unattainable by mere mortals. To analyze the structural features applied by Nature, to accomplish high molecular recog nition, and to simulate these features by synthesis have recently become therefore favorite occupations of chemists. The purpose of this conference was to bring together two groups, the analysts and the syntheticists, to discuss the present status of the knowledge. This monograph contains the chairman's introduction in which he has summarized the main points at issue and the contributions of the renowned scientists who participated. The organizers hope that it will stimulate further research in this fascinating field.

Book Synopsis Organic Semiconductors and Biopolymers by : Leonid I. Boguslavskii
Download or read book Organic Semiconductors and Biopolymers written by Leonid I. Boguslavskii and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, considerable progress has been made in the study of organic semiconductors. The main directions of investigation, have been determined and substantial results have been achieved in the theoretical treatment of many questions. However, the range of investigations is so broad that it is impossible to discuss all branches fully in a short monograph. In fact, the chemist synthe sizing systems with conjugated bonds and studying their reactivity, the physical chemist studying the catalytic and absorption proper ties of substances with conjugated bonds, the physicist studying the photoelectric and magnetic characteristics of dyes and polynuclear hydrocarbons, and the biologist attempting to explain the mechan ism of energy transfer in the living cell -they are all working in the field of organic semiconductors. Consequentiy, in the present book the authors have not attempted to include all sides of the problem of organic semiconductors. The monograph considers in detail only those questions which appear to the authors to be most immediate and interesting. Other questions are touched on only to the extent necessary to illustrate the main material. The book begins with a statement of material which is of the nature of a review. The main classes of organic semiconductors are mentioned but the methods for their preparation are not illus trated in detail. Somewhat more attention is devoted to the depen dence of the electrical characteristics of organic semiconductors on their structure and chemical composition.

Book Synopsis Low-Temperature Microscopy and Analysis by : Patrick Echlin
Download or read book Low-Temperature Microscopy and Analysis written by Patrick Echlin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frozen-hydrated specimen is the principal element that unifies the subject of low temperature microscopy, and frozen-hydrated specimens are what this book is all about. Freezing the sample as quickly as possible and then further preparing the specimen for microscopy or microanalysis, whether still embedded in ice or not: there seem to be as many variations on this theme as there are creative scientists with problems of structure and composition to investigate. Yet all share a body of com mon fact and theory upon which their work must be based. Low-Temperature Micros copy and Analysis provides, for the first time, a comprehensive treatment of all the elements to which one needs access. What is the appeal behind the use of frozen-hydrated specimens for biological electron microscopy, and why is it so important that such a book should now have been written? If one cannot observe dynamic events as they are in progress, rapid specimen freezing at least offers the possibility to trap structures, organelles, macro molecules, or ions and other solutes in a form that is identical to what the native structure was like at the moment of trapping. The pursuit of this ideal becomes all the more necessary in electron microscopy because of the enormous increase in resolution that is available with electron-optical instruments, compared to light optical microscopes.
