Book excerpt: Libya has the largest petroleum reserves of any country in Africa and since production began in 1961 over 20 billion barrels of oil have been produced. Libya is scheduled to reach the mid-point of depletion of reserves in 2001 and this provides a timely point at which to review the state of petroleum exploration in Libya. A large amount of data has been published on the geology of Libya, but it is scattered through the literature; much of the older data has been superceded, and several of the key publications, especially those published in Libya, are difficult to find. This book represents the first attempt to produce a comprehensive synthesis of the petroleum geology of Libya. It is based exclusively on published data, supplemented by the author's experience gained during ten years work in Libya. The aim of the book is to systematically review the plate tectonics, structural evolution, stratigraphy, geochemistry, and petroleum systems of Libya, and provides valuable new data on fields, production, and reserves. This volume will provide a ready source of reference to individuals and companies who wish to obtain an overview of the petroleum geology of Libya, and will save them the laborious task of sifting through hundreds of publications to find the data they require. The book includes 148 newly drawn figures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Murzuq Basin is a large intracratonic sag basin located in southwestern Libya. Exploration efforts started in this vast and remote Saharan region already in 1957 and 60 exploratory wells have been drilled to date, resulting in over 20 discoveries with around 4,000 million barrels of oil in place. Most discoveries have been made in Ordovician sandstone reservoirs sourced by hot shales of the Lower Silurian Tanezzuft Formation. Oil is already being produced and exported from the area, but the basin's total hydrocarbon potential is still poorly understood. Recent exploration - especially the major discovery and initial development of the Giant "Elephant" Field - has greatly increased interest for the area's potential. Many petroleum geologists and companies now believe that the basin may well develop into a new major hydrocarbon province which will significantly contribute to Europe's energy needs in the next decades. This book presents papers from a conference held at Sebha University - on the eastern margins of the Murzug Basin - in September 1998.The book continues an ongoing series of presentations of the geology of Libya, but the 25 contributions herein mostly centre on the Murzuq Basin itself and on nearby areas. There are still many unresolved questions in terms of geological and hydrocarbon exploration in these difficult desert areas, but the papers herein will hopefully present a first comprehensive overview of an exciting frontier exploration region. About half of the papers are directly related to hydrocarbon exploration, and to source rock and reservoir development, but a wide variety of other features are also described, ranging from palaeontology and biostratigraphy to ore geology and water resources, covering the entire geological column from the Precambrian to the Holocene. The book concludes with a bibliography covering all geological aspects of this challenging but very promising frontier area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wealth of petroleum has made the Middle East one of the most actively explored regions of the world. The volume of geological, geophysical and geochemical data collected by the petroleum industry in recent decades is enormous. The Middle East may be a unique region in the world where the volume of subsurface data and information exceeds that based on surface outcrop. This book reviews the tectonic and geological history of the Middle East and the regional hydrocarbon potential on a country by country basis in the context of current ideas developed through seismic and sequence stratigraphy and incorporating the ideas of global sea level change.Subsurface data have been used as much as possible to amplify the descriptions. The paleogeographic approach provides a means to view the area as a whole. While the country by country approach inevitably leads to some repetition, it enhances the value of the volume as a teaching tool and underlines some of the changing lithologies within formations carrying the same name.

Book excerpt: Libya is located at the northern part of Africa, immediately south of the Mediterranean Sea, and covers an area of about 1,800,000 square kilometers. Most of it is geographically classified as part of the great Sahara Desert that trends from the Atlantic Ocean to the west to the Arabian Peninsula to the east. Only the northern part of Libya is characterized by enjoyable weather during most of the seasons, moderate rainfall during the winter, and consequently, represents the most cultivated part of the country, with the highest concentration of population. A large part of Libya is characterized by dry hot weather and is covered by moving sand dunes which are more commonly localized in the centers of the basins. The remainder of the country is capped by rock formations represented by metamorphic, sedimentary, and igneous rocks that range in age from the Precambrian to Recent. The major structures of Libya are represented by four basins: namely, Murzok, Gadamis, Kufra, and Sirte. The first three of which are Paleozoic in age; the last one is Tertiary in age. These basins are separated by a group of arches including the Gargaf arch which separates Murzok Basin from Gadamis Basin in west Libya. The Tibesti-Tripoli arch in central Libya and the Tibesti arch between the Kufra Basin and Sirte Basin. Two uplifts striking in an east-west direction mark the northernmost part of Libya, the Jabel Akhdar in east Libya and the Jabel Nefusa in west Libya. The economic resources of the country are represented principally by oil and gas production. The bulk of this production comes from the Sirte Basin where it was trapped in sandstone, organic reefs, and carbonate facies that accumulated on topographic highs enhanced by uplifting of basement blocks. Other significant natural resources, though not in production, are represented by large quantities of iron ore in the Wadi Ashati area, south of the Gargaf Mountains. The analysis of LANDSAT space photographs revealed about 2,000 linears, unequally distributed in the different parts of the country, and are characterized by considerable variations in their length, strike, and density. Some of them coincide with known structural features including fault scarps, topographic features, dikes, alignments of igneous bodies, and straight drainage systems. The origin of many others is yet to be revealed by geophysical exploration, field work, or borehole drilling.

Book excerpt: Abstract:The Cretaceous-Tertiary northwest-trending Sirt Basin system, Libya is a rift/sag basin formed on Pan-African to Paleozoic-aged basement of North Africa. This study is an investigation of the rift-basin architecture and tectonic framework of the western Sirt Basin. A combination of several geological and geophysical methods (remote sensing interpretation supported by surface geologic maps, borehole data analysis, from about 300 deep wells, extensive seismic reflection profiles and maps, and paleostress analysis), have been used to construct geological cross sections, and surface and subsurface geology maps that have proved particularly useful in identifying various regional and local structures in the study area. Indication of the relative timing of structures and movement along faults has been determined where possible. We recognize six lithostratigraphic sequences (phases) in the area's stratigraphic framework. A Pre-graben (Pre-rift) initiation stage involved the Pre-Cretaceous sediments formed before the main Sirt Basin subsidence. Then followed a Cretaceous to Eocene graben-fill stage that can divided into four structurally-active and structurally-inactive periods, and finally a terminal continental siliciclastics-rich package representing the Eocene post-rift stage. Late Eocene rocks exposed in the western part of the basin exhibit a complex network of branching segmented normal and strike-slip faults, generally with a NNW-SSE structural grain. Many surface structural features have been interpreted from satellite images which confirm sinistral strike-slip kinematics. Relay ramp structures, numerous elongate asymmetric synclines associated with shallow west limbs and steeper dipping east limbs are developed in the hangingwalls adjacent to west downthrowing normal faults. These structural patterns reflect Cretaceous/Tertiary extensional tectonics with additional control by underlying pre-existing Pan-African basement fabrics and ENE-WSW trending Hercynian structures. The interpretation of a large volume of two-way time seismic data has allowed the construction of long regional seismic cross sections and resultant time structure contour and thickness maps, thus enabling an understanding of the structural and stratigraphic relationships on a regional scale. Six major fault systems were identified initially from the remote sensing study and was subsequently expanded to seven on the basis of interpretation of 2D seismic data. These fault systems dissect the study area into geomorphological elevated blocks and depressions. Most of the oil fields present in the study area are associated with structural hinge zones and adjoining highs. A new kinematic and structural conceptual model is proposed here for the evolution of NW Libya (Jifarah Basin and the Nafusah Uplift) and Hun Graben during Late Eocene times. The multidisciplinary approach used in this study has resulted in good surface and sub-surface structure correlation and future petroleum prospectivity has been identified in this study. We relate the Sirt Basin rift development as exemplified in our study area to the break-up of Gondwana represented by the structural evolution of the West-Central African rift system and the South and Central Atlantic, the Tethys and the Indian Oceans.
