Book excerpt: Active and passive source data from two seismic experiments within the interdisciplinary project TIPTEQ (from The Incoming Plate to mega Thrust EarthQuake processes) were used to image and identify the structural and petrophysical properties (such as P- and S-velocities, Poisson's ratios, pore pressure, density and amount of fluids) within the Chilean seismogenic coupling zone at 38.25°S, where in 1960 the largest earthquake ever recorded (Mw 9.5) occurred. Two S-wave velocity models calculated using traveltime and noise tomography techniques were merged with an existing velocity model to obtain a 2D S-wave velocity model, which gathered the advantages of each individual model. In a following step, P- and S-reflectivity images of the subduction zone were obtained using different pre stack and post-stack depth migration techniques. Among them, the recent prestack line-drawing depth migration scheme yielded revealing results. Next, synthetic seismograms modelled using the reflectivity method allowed, through their input 1D synthetic P- and S-velocities, to infer the composition and rocks within the subduction zone. Finally, an image of the subduction zone is given, jointly interpreting the results from this work with results from other studies. The Chilean seismogenic coupling zone at 38.25°S shows a continental crust with highly reflective horizontal, as well as (steep) dipping events. Among them, the Lanalhue Fault Zone (LFZ), which is interpreted to be east-dipping, is imaged to very shallow depths. ...

Book excerpt: Subduction zones are convergent margins where one tectonic plate slides beneath another and is recycled into the mantle. Pelagic, hemi-pelagic, and terrigenous sediment deposited onto the subducting plate is off-scraped onto the overriding plate to form an accretionary prism or subduct beneath the overriding plate on top of the subducting plate, where the sediment is either accreted to the base of the upper plate or subducted to at least volcanic depths, or a combination of these processes can occur. Here, I use 2D active-source marine seismic data to create pre-stack depth migrated images and p-wave velocity models to investigate properties of accreted and subducted sediment and examine accretionary wedge and shallow upper plate structures on two thick-sedimented subduction zone margins, the south-central Chile and Hikurangi margin. These two subduction zones have very different seismic behavior; the south-central Chile margin is the location of the largest and sixth largest instrumentally recorded earthquakes, and has a long history of great earthquakes, while the Hikurangi margin has no evidence of very large ruptures, but both deep and shallow slow slip events are observed along this margin. I first examine the south-central Chile margin using 13 seismic transects across the trench and frontal wedge in south-central Chile to investigate along-strike variations in trench sediment properties to understand the partitioning of trench sediment into accreted vs subducted sediment, and link the properties of the subducting sediment to large megathrust earthquakes that have occurred along this margin. I then analyze upper plate structures along the 13 transects, such as thrust and normal faults imaged in the slope sediment, and discuss the relationship between the mechanisms that formed the faults, the stability of the wedge, and how wedge stability may vary throughout the seismic cycle. I then focus on the Hikurangi margin, where the Hikurangi Plateau, part of the Pacific Plate, subducts beneath the Australian Plate. I use three transects across the trench and accretionary prism to investigate differences in sediment consolidation and frontal wedge development due to seamounts on the incoming plate, and discuss potential implications for slow slip events

Book excerpt: Subduction zones consume oceanic lithosphere and are an indispensible part of plate tectonics. Unlike the oceanic lithosphere production system which can be linked as a nearly continuous, albeit sinuous, strand around the earth, subduction zones are a rather dissociated group and are found in several isolated corners of the world. While plate tectonics can predict that subduction zones are required along certain plate boundaries, it does not stipulate how subduction zones initiate and develop. The preservation of newly created oceanic lithosphere and the propensity for spreading centers to fragment continents leaves a wealth of geological informa tion on the initiation and evolution of spreading. On the other hand, the subject of subduction initiation has little observational basis. To find such observations, we need to look at some muddled tectonic regimes. The Macquarie Ridge complex presents a natural laboratory for studies of subduction initiation. 2. Tectonics of the Macquarie Ridge Complex The Macquarie Ridge complex is a complicated physiographic feature that trends approximately north-south between South Island, New Zealand and the Pacific-Antarctica spreading center. This feature consists of a sequence of troughs and ridges, with Macquarie Island as the only exposed expression. The seismically active Macquarie Ridge complex (hereafter: MRC) is crudely continuous with the Tonga-Kermadec-New Zealand seismic activity. The basic physiographic features and seismicity of the MRC are shown in Figure I. The earthquake epicenters generally cluster about the bathymetric expression of the MRC.

Book excerpt: Major findings include that oceanic plate cooling models do not explain the velocities observed beneath the Juan de Fuca plate, that slow velocities in the forearc appear to be more prevalent in areas modeled to have experienced high slip in past Cascadia megathrust earthquakes, and along strike variations in phase velocity reflect variations in arc structure and backarc tectonics.
