Book excerpt: Engineers traditionally base their designs on past experience; this is particularly true in the building and construction industry. In recent decades, however, as the design is increasingly required for systems in environments where there is very little experience to rely on, e.g. nuclear structures, offshore platforms, and space stations, the uncertainty that the engineer faces becomes an important issue and requires serious study. As the uncertainty in the structural loading in general plays a dominant role, in the last decade there has been a rapid increase in the study of the modeling and risk evaluation of loadings on structural systems, in particular, the problem of risk under multiple loads over the structure's lifetime. Methodologies based on probability and statistics theories have been developed to quantify the uncertainty and, as a result, engineers are now better equipped to face the challenge of design under uncertainty. This book provides an account of the development thus far in this area and can be understood by readers with only a basic background in probability and statistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncertainty is certain to be found in structural engineering, making it crucial to structure design. This book covers three competing philosophies behind structural safety and reliability: probabilistic analysis, fuzzy set-based treatments, and the convex approach. Explaining the theory behind probabilistic analysis, fuzzy set-based treatments, and the convex approach in detail, alongside their implementation, use, and benefits, the book compares and contrasts these methods, enabling the reader to solve problems associated with uncertainty. These uncertainty issues can be seen in civil engineering structures, risk of earthquakes, impact of rough seas on ships, and turbulence affecting aerospace vehicles. Building on the authors’ many years of experience in the field, Philosophies of Structural Safety and Reliability is an essential guide to structural uncertainty. Topics covered in the book include properties of materials and their structural deterioration, safety factor and reliability, risk evaluation and loads, and their combinations. This book will be of interest to students and professionals in the fields of aerospace, civil, mechanical, marine, and ocean engineering.

Book excerpt: This book contains contributions from various authors on different important topics related with probabilistic methods used for the design of structures. Initially several of the papers were prepared for advanced courses on structural reliability or on probabilistic methods for structural design. These courses have been held in different countries and have been given by different groups of lecturers. They were aimed at engineers and researchers who already had some exposure to structural reliability methods and thus they presented overviews of the work in the various topics. The book includes a selection of those contributions, which can be of support for future courses or for engineers and researchers that want to have an update on specific topics. It is considered a complement to the existing textbooks on structural reliability, which normally ensure the coverage of the basic topics but then are not extensive enough to cover some more specialised aspects. In addition to the contributions drawn from those lectures there are several papers that have been prepared specifically for this book, aiming at complementing the others in providing an overall account of the recent advances in the field. It is with sadness that in the meanwhile we have seen the disappearance of two of the contributors to the book and, in fact two of the early contributors to this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat of ASCE. This report examines the loads to which tall buildings are subjected so that engineers can precisely define the related structural elements that are necessary before translating a client's needs into a safe design. The report explores five different classes of loads?gravity loads and temperature affects, earthquake loads, wind loading and wind effects, fire, and accidental loads?as well as quality control and overall safety considerations.ØSteel buildings, which hold the record for height, tax the designer's ingenuity to provide adequate resistance to lateral loading. Concrete buildings are both more numerous and widely distributed, and for them vertical gravity loads may be the chief problem. Both steel and concrete buildings and lateral and vertical loads are addressed. Other subjects covered include: dead, live, cyclic snow, construction, and combined loads; code requirements; meteorological and environmental factors in design; firefighting provisions; and modeling. Contributions came from more than 800 contributors, all international and professional and heavily representing design and industrial firms. Condensed references follow each chapter, and a glossary is included.

Book excerpt: Prepared by the Design Loads on Structures during Construction Standards Committee of the Codes and Standards Activities Division of the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE Design loads during construction must account for the often short duration of loading and for the variability of temporary loads. Many elements of the completed structure that provide strength, stiffness, stability, or continuity may not be present during construction. Design Loads on Structures during Construction, ASCE/SEI 37-14, describes the minimum design requirements for construction loads, load combinations, and load factors affecting buildings and other structures that are under construction. It addresses partially completed structures as well as temporary support and access structures used during construction. The loads specified are suitable for use either with strength design criteria, such as ultimate strength design (USD) and load and resistance factor design (LRFD), or with allowable stress design (ASD) criteria. The loads are applicable to all conventional construction methods. Topics include: load factors and load combinations; dead and live loads; construction loads; lateral earth pressure; and environmental loads. Of particular note, the environmental load provisions have been aligned with those of Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures, ASCE/SEI 7-10. Because ASCE/SEI 7-10 does not address loads during construction, the environmental loads in this standard were adjusted for the duration of the construction period. This new edition of Standard 37 prescribes loads based on probabilistic analysis, observation of construction practices, and expert opinions. Embracing comments, recommendations, and experiences that have evolved since the original 2002 edition, this standard serves structural engineers, construction engineers, design professionals, code officials, and building owners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncertainties about analytical models, fluctuations in loads, and variability of material properties contribute to the small but real probability of structure failures. This advanced engineering text describes methods developed to deal with stochastic aspects of structural behavior, providing a framework for evaluating, comparing, and combining stochastic effects. Starting with the general problem of consistent evaluation of the reliability of structures, the text proceeds to examination of the second-moment reliability index methods that describe failure in terms of one or more limit states. It presents first-order reliability methods for computation of failure probabilities for individual limit states and for systems; and it illustrates identification of the design parameters most affecting reliability. Additional subjects include a self-contained presentation of extreme-value theory and stochastic processes; stationary, evolutionary, and nonlinear aspects of stochastic response of structures; a stochastic approach to material fatigue damage and crack propagation; and stochastic models for several natural and manufactured loads.
