Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an extensive introduction to the mechanics of anti-sandwiches: non-classical composites with multiple homogeneous layers but widely differing parameters concerning their geometry and materials. Therefore, they require special attention in the context of structural mechanics. The theoretical framework presented here is based on a five parametric, planar continuum, which is a pragmatic version of the COSSERAT shell. The direct approach used here is enlarged where constraints are introduced to couple layers and furnish a layer-wise theory. Restrictions are made in terms of linearity – geometrical and physical. After having defined appropriate variables for the kinematics and kinetics, linear elastic material behaviour is considered, where the constitutive tensors are introduced in the context of isotropy. The basics are presented in a clear and distinct manner using index-free tensor notation. This format is simple, concise, and practical. Closed-form solutions of such boundary value problems are usually associated with serious limitations on the boundary conditions, which constitutes a serious disadvantage. To construct approximate solutions, a variational method is employed as the basis for computational procedures where the Finite Element Method is applied. Therefore, the introduction of the vector-matrix notation is convenient. Based on the plane considerations, a finite eight-node SERENDIPITY element with enlarged degrees of freedom is realised. To avoid artificial stiffening effects, various integration types are applied, and the solutions generated are subsequently verified with closed-form solutions for monolithic limiting cases. Within this setting, it is possible to efficiently calculate the global structural behaviour of Anti-Sandwiches, at least up to a certain degree. The power of the proposed method in combination with the numerical solution approach is demonstrated for several case and parameter studies. In this regard, the optimal geometrical and material parameters to increase stiffness are analysed and the results for the kinematic and kinetic quantities are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main advantages of sandwiches as structural components are now well known and well-established. Due to the progress in polymer science and engineering and advances in manufacturing processes, sandwich structures can blend various functional and structural properties and therefore lead to highly innovating systems. The current difficulty to overcome is to provide designers with proper methodologies and tools that could enable them to design improved sandwich structures. Such dedicated design tools should be efficient, reliable, flexible and user-friendly. They should be based on advanced knowledge of sandwich behaviour at global and local scales. Such approach relies on our capability to test, identify, control and model structure performances. The impressive variety of core and face materials and the rapid developments in forming processes give new opportunities to design components which have more complex shapes and higher integrated functional and structural properties. Interest in sandwiches is permanently growing in industry and refined testing and modelling approaches should be encouraged to set up relevant guidelines to design reliable advanced structures. The European Society for Mechanics sponsored the EUROMECH 360 Colloquium on the 'Mechanics of Sandwich Structures' in Saint-Etienne, France, on 13 - 15 May 1997. The main purpose of EUROMECH 360 was to go into the most recent progresses in sandwich analysis and design, including mechanical modelling and testing. It was expected that the Colloquium should contribute to define new research directions to support development of advanced applications in strategic industrial sectors such as ground transportations or building and civil engineering.

Book excerpt: This collection of recent activities provides researchers and scientists with the latest trends in characterization and developments of composed materials and structures. Here, the expression ‘composed materials’ indicates a wider range than the expression ‘composite material’ which is many times limited to classical fibre reinforced plastics. The idea of composed structures and materials is to join different components in order to obtain in total better properties than one of the single constituents can provide. In this collection, well known experts present their research on composed materials such as textile composites, sandwich plates, hollow sphere structures, reinforced concrete as well as classical fibre reinforced materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis and Design of Structural Sandwich Panels serves as a simple guide to the fundamental aspects of the theory of sandwich construction and to the assumptions on which it is based. This book discusses the real importance of the assumptions made in sandwich theory concerning the relative stiffness and thickness of the faces and the core. Organized into 12 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the relatively simple problems of sandwich beams and struts. This text then discusses the bending of sandwich beams, which grows naturally from the ordinary theory of bending. Other chapters explore the bending and buckling of sandwich panels. This book discusses as well the panel analyses based on the Ritz method and on the derivation of differential equations for a sandwich plate. This book should be of interest not only to aeronautical engineers but also to readers concerned with the design of sandwich panels in the building, plastics, and boat-building industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on the impact response of lightweight sandwich structures. As a kind of lightweight structure, sandwich structure has been widely used in various engineering fields, such as aerospace, ships, vehicles and so on, because of its high specific stiffness, high specific strength and versatility. During service, the sandwich structures may be subjected to various impact loads, which may result in serious damage, thereby reducing the stiffness, strength and load-bearing ca-pacity, thereby shortening the service life and bringing safety hazards. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of impact behavior and failure mechanisms is of great significance for the wider application of sandwich structures. In the past decades, many scholars have conducted in-depth research on related topics. But it is difficult for readers to systematically read all the literature in a short time. This book seeks to succinctly summarize the development and the results achieved in this field. This book focuses on simple, classical structures, such as beams, plates, and shells, under loads such as low-velocity impact, explosive load, and bullet penetrations. The main research methods are theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and experimental investigation. The purpose is to reveal the deep mechanism and lay a foundation for the application of sandwich structure in engineering practice.

It covers the different characteristics of bulk material failure under dilatational or distortional loads and develops a unified description of the corresponding failure surface. It proposes a coupled strain and energy failure criterion for the assessment of notch-induced crack nucleation and presents a weak-interface-model that allows for efficient stress, strain and failure analyses of hyperelastic adhesive lap joints. Theoretical concepts for the measurement of fracture properties of nonlinear elastic materials are provided. The methodology is developed using two exemplary hyperelastic silicones, DOWSIL 993 Structural Glazing Sealant and DOWSIL Transparent Structural Silicone Adhesive, and is validated using large sets of experiments of different loading conditions.

Book excerpt: Sandwich structures represent a special form of a laminated composite material or structural elements, where a relatively thick, lightweight and compliant core material separates thin stiff and strong face sheets. The faces are usually made of laminated polymeric based composite materials, and typically, the core can be a honeycomb type material, a polymeric foam or balsa wood. The faces and the core are joined by adhesive bonding, which ensures the load transfer between the sandwich constituent parts. The result is a special laminate with very high bending stiffness and strength to weight ratios. Sandwich structures are being used successfully for a variety of applications such as spacecraft, aircraft, train and car structures, wind turbine blades, boat/ship superstructures, boat/ship hulls and many others. The overall objective of the 7th International Conference on Sandwich Structures (ICSS-7) is to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest research and technology on all aspects of sandwich structures and materials, spanning the entire spectrum of research to applications in all the fields listed above.
