Book Synopsis Governance in the Twenty-First-Century University: Approaches to Effective Leadership and Strategic Management by : Dennis John Gayle
Download or read book Governance in the Twenty-First-Century University: Approaches to Effective Leadership and Strategic Management written by Dennis John Gayle and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-09-28 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores approaches to effective leadership and strategic management in the twenty-first century university that recognize and respond to the perceptions and attitudes of university leaders toward institutional structures. It examines the differences between treating universities as businesses and managing universities in a businesslike manner, what kinds of leadership will best address challenges, and how to gain consensus among constituents that change is needed. From historical background to modern e-learning techniques, we look at governance to find systems that are effectively structured to balance the needs of students, educators, administrators, trustees, and legislators.
Book Synopsis Locus of Authority by : William G. Bowen
Download or read book Locus of Authority written by William G. Bowen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-05 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why colleges and universities should change their governance systems—and what could happen if they don't Do higher education institutions have what it takes to reform effectively from within? Locus of Authority argues that every issue facing today's colleges and universities, from stagnant degree completion rates to worrisome cost increases, is exacerbated by a century-old system of governance that desperately requires change. While prior studies have focused on boards of trustees and presidents, few have looked at the place of faculty within the governance system. Bowen and Tobin explore whether departments remain the best ways through which to organize decision making and if the concepts of academic freedom and shared governance need to be sharpened and redefined. Using case studies of four very different institutions, the authors demonstrate that college and university governance has capably adjusted to the necessities of the moment and governance norms and policies should be assessed in the context of historical events. They also demonstrate that successful reform depends on the artful consideration of technological, financial, and cultural developments. Locus of Authority shows that the consequences of not addressing college and university governance are more than the nation can afford.

This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2012 ASHE/CAHEP Barbara Townsend Lecture AwardTo prosper and thrive in an increasingly unpredictable national and global environment, U.S. higher education will need to adapt, innovate, and evolve once again, as it has during every major societal change over the past four centuries. The purpose of this new edition, published a turbulent decade after the first, is to provide institutional leaders -- from department chairs to trustees -- with a broad understanding of the academic enterprise, strategic guidance, and key principles, to assist them in navigating the future and drive the success of their institutions as they confront the unimagined.Recognizing that the hallmark of higher education in the U.S. is the diversity of institution types, each of which is affected differently by external and internal influences, the authors provide examples and ideas drawn from the spectrum of colleges and universities in the not-for-profit sector. This book covers the major functions and constituent departments and units within institutions; the stakeholders from students and faculty through the echelons of administration; the external environment of elected officials, foundations, philanthropists, and the new changing media; and innovations in teaching, technology, data analytics, legal frameworks, as well as economic, demographic, and political pressures. The book is informed by the proposition that adhering to four principles--which the authors identify as having enabled institutions of higher education to successfully navigate ever-changing and volatile pasts--will enable them to flourish in the coming decades:The four principles are:1. Be mission centric by making all key decisions based on a core mission and set of values.2. Be able to adapt to environmental change in alignment with the mission and core values.3. Be committed to democratic ideals by seeking to promote them and modeling democratic practices on and off campus.4. Be models for inclusion, equity, and positive social change.

Book excerpt: Governance in U.S. higher education is discussed, based on a 1982 survey of decision making in higher education with attention to its roots, the effects of current conditions on decision-making arrangements, and a possible governance framework for the future. While both private and public education are considered, the public sector is emphasized. Governance is defined as both formal decision arrangements and informal procedures by which standards are maintained. Information was obtained from a survey of decision-making in state higher education agencies, flagship universities, four-year colleges, and two-year colleges. After discussing the mission of universities, the tradition of self-regulation in American higher education is examined, including the governing board and voluntary accreditation. Also covered are outside governance connections (the state, the federal government, and the courts) that have significantly altered the mission and governance of higher education. It is concluded that, on balance, higher education's partnership with governments on both state and national levels has generated far more benefits than it has administrative burdens. However, because external influences on academic governance should not be allowed to overwhelm internal governance structures, colleges are urged to strengthen self-regulation capacity, to take leadership roles, and to revitalize their historic governance tradition. The survey questionnaire is included, together with a list of participating institutions and agencies. (SW) reprinted from ERIC.
Book Synopsis Competing Conceptions of Academic Governance by : William G. Tierney
Download or read book Competing Conceptions of Academic Governance written by William G. Tierney and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2009-07-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, institutional leaders face numerous struggles: intervention from boards of trustees, alumni, and state legislators; decline in financial support from the states; and competition in an increasingly global marketplace. While it is agreed that effective governance structures allow institutions to respond creatively to these challenges, how best to allocate control in order to maximize institutional efficiency, preserve academic freedom, and ensure institutional identity remains unclear. Increasingly, administrators look to non-academic institutions for governance and management strategies. In Competing Conceptions of Academic Governance, William G. Tierney brings together faculty members, administrators, and policy experts to discuss differing views of academic governance at institutional, state, and international levels. Topics include the effects of globalization and the prospect of international accreditation; balancing the entrepreneurial and philosophical goals of higher education; the interaction between state governments and public universities; and the conflicting interests and roles of boards of trustees, administrators, and faculty. Carefully weighing various models and strategies, Competing Conceptions of Academic Governance provides new ways of understanding and addressing the changes that are transforming higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revamp senior administration organization for more effective governance Governance Reconsidered: How Boards, Presidents, Administrators, and Faculty Can Help Their Colleges Thrive takes an in-depth look at the current practice of governance in higher education and explores solutions for more effective functioning. Written by a former college president, the book provides an insider's perspective on the growing tensions around the traditional shared governance model and identifies the key challenges facing trustees, presidents, senior administrators, and faculty. Traditional shared governance operations are typically time-consuming, process-laden, and slow to respond to the internal and external forces acting upon modern educational institutions. Higher education is facing increasing political and economic pressure, and senior administration frequently needs the flexibility to make institutional decisions quickly. Using recent public scandals as examples, Governance Reconsidered illustrates how the tension between the need for timely decisions and action versus the importance of mission and academic quality is creating a dramatic systemic problem. The book provides practical advice on the issues at the heart of the matter, including: The nature and pace of change on campus, including the pressures facing higher education Clarity about the roles and responsibilities of trustees, the president, and the faculty The campus community's role in decision-making activities How thriving universities can govern collaboratively The book also addresses the brand new challenges that affect higher education governance, including MOOCs, online learning, and rising questions about value and cost. Campus leaders must work together effectively to boost higher education, and Governance Reconsidered contains the questions and answers integral to implementing effective governance.

Book excerpt: Essential reading for policy makers, institutional leaders, managers, advisors, and scholars in the field of higher education, International Perspectives on the Governance of Higher Education analyzes how the governance of higher education systems has evolved in recent years. This volume is an authoritative overview with contributions from authors from the U.K., the Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal, Norway, Italy, Ireland, Austria, Germany, Canada, the U.S. and Australia. This is an arduous but gratifying challenge, given the current complexity of multi-actor and multi-level steering in higher education, rife with unintended outcomes and unanticipated dynamics. The edited volume looks to: The role of government, market and network steering in higher education systems. Governance in the knowledge society. How the use of disciplinary approaches help to better understand the steering policy processes and outcomes in higher education. Empirical studies exploring governance issues across systems and over time within systems.
