Book Synopsis Structural Adjustment & the African Farmer by : Alex Duncan
Download or read book Structural Adjustment & the African Farmer written by Alex Duncan and published by Heinemann Educational Books. This book was released on 1992 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the impact of structural adjustment policies upon the incomes and welfare of Africa's peasant farmers who currently operate at very low levels of productivity of both land and labour and are confronted with low household income and inadequate food security. A common method has been applied across five countries. Analyses have been made of the links between national economic policies and the various markets in which the smallholders operate, and the services and infrastructures which influence their productive capacities. There are differences in the resource base and the level of ecological deterioration, in export opportunities, in physical infrastructure and, in particular, in the depth and nature of economic policy reforms. The team have recognised the important differences between these five countries and overcome the formidable problems of collecting agricultural data in Africa. The book provides firm evidence of the impact, both positive and negative, of structural adjustment. The editors argue for a more targeted, project-specific approach to small farmer development. This complements the current, donor interest in policy related aid support.

Book excerpt: The IMF/World bank Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAP) have been the subject of intense academic debate since their wide adoption, particularly in Sub-Saharan African countries. The present study analyses the effects of the SAP on tradable agriculture in Nigeria using the example of cocoa farming. Based on the dependent economy framework, the study examines how far economic prerequisites required for the successful structural transformations were met in the Nigerian case. Questions relating to the magnitude and length of real devaluation were empirically investigated. Furthermore, the quantum of changes in relative incentives between agricultural tradables and non tradables were analysed using the policy analysis matrix. The study also examined the factors that constrain the achievement of intended policy objectives. These include among others, dualistic institutional regulations and the effects of multiple exchange rates. Based on the findings, policy reforms were then suggested.

Seminar and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1994 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After more than a decade of experience with structural adjustment programs, the Hohenheim-Seminar of the European Association of Agricultural Economists «Food and Agricultural Policies under Structural Adjustment» brought together researchers and development experts to exchange research results and experiences; to explore alternative approaches that might be more effective for growth, institutional development and welfare; and to draw conclusions for food and agricultural policy design. The book consistently emphasizes that appart from agricultural prices non-price factors constitute in many countries the binding constraints to better agricultural performance. Improvements are needed in education, health, social services, transport and rural support institutions. Alleviating such constraints are longterm processes, and success cannot be expected overnight. At the same time, immediate actions are needed to protect the poor against negative effects of structural adjustment measures.
Book Synopsis Structural Adjustment and the Agricultural Sector in Latin America and the Caribbean by : John Weeks

This book was released on 2016-01-03 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the regional debt crisis, most governments of Latin America in the 1980s entered into a process of profound policy change, from an import substitution oriented strategy to a focus upon export-promotion, with an emphasis upon market liberalisation. According to mainstream economic theory, the effect of this shift would be to favour agriculture. This book, with contributors from Latin America and Europe, surveys the results on agriculture of a decade of policy change, and to produce new and unexpected insights.
