Book excerpt: The debt crisis and global economic changes of the 1980s caused Third World nations to restructure economic policies, community resources, the labor market, and intra-household divisions of labor. These changes swelled the ranks of the unemployed, the poor, and the malnourished. Women, in particular, were affected negatively by processes of structural adjustment because they represent a disproportionate share of the world's poor, are increasingly represented among low-wage workers, and are forced to balance wage work with subsistence and domestic production in meeting household needs. Using country-based studies, this text offers new perspectives on the consequences of economic crisis in terms of changing state practices and household and family organization, patterns of resource allocation, and women's work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third World debt crisis, the International Monetary Fund and World Bank's adjustment policies have compelled many countries to move towards a contraction of public sector expenditure in favour of market orientated development policies. Women in general and the poorest amongst them in particular have borne a disproportionate burden of the ensuing hardships. This book addresses the shortcomings in the current gender blind analytical frameworks of governments and financial organisations and offers alternative strategies for combating recession and poverty.

Download or read book Structural Adjustment written by SAPRIN and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural adjustment programmes are the largest single cause of increased poverty, inequality and hunger in developing countries. This book is the most comprehensive, real-life assessment to date of the impacts of the liberalisation, deregulation, privatisation and austerity that constitute structural adjustment. It is the result of a unique five year collaboration among citizensā groups, developing country governments, and the World Bank itself. Its authors, the members of the Structural Adjustment Participatory Review International Network (SAPRIN), reveal the practical consequences for manufacturing, small enterprise, wages and conditions, social services, health, education, food security, poverty and inequality. The stark conclusion emerges: if there is to be any hope for meaningful development, structural adjustment and neoliberal economics must be jettisoned.
Book Synopsis Paying the Price by : Mariarosa Dalla Costa
Download or read book Paying the Price written by Mariarosa Dalla Costa and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of studies of the negative impact of the debt crisis and structural adjustment presents a new and damning argument against the World Bank and the IMF. They suggest not only that structural adjustment policies have serious consequences for the family and social organization in developing countries, affecting fertility, life expectancy, health, education, the sexual division of labour and land-tenure relations, but that these consequences were foreseen by the architects of the policies. The authors point out that women suffer more than men from structural adjustment, yet it is they who are at the forefront of grassroots mobilization and resistance. Women now represent a particular focus for international institutions whose programmes, in the name of development, are producing ever increasing levels of poverty.
Book Synopsis The Globalized Woman by : Christa Wichterich
Download or read book The Globalized Woman written by Christa Wichterich and published by Zed Books. This book was released on 2000-02 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization creates growth without jobs in the North, structural adjustment in the South, privatization in the East and the dismantling of states everywhere. The author of this extraordinary book uses a mixture of case studies, examples and quotations to illustrate some hard facts. She looks at women across the world to show how their lives have been turned upside down, by industrialization in the South and a return to homeworking in the North. From New York to Phnom Penh, from Moscow to Dakar, we see the devastating effects of the unfettered power of transnational corporations on women's lives.
Book Synopsis Adjustment and Social Sector Restructuring by : Jessica M. Vivian
Download or read book Adjustment and Social Sector Restructuring written by Jessica M. Vivian and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social policy in developing countries has been substantially affected in recent years by economic crisis and structural adjustment, and perhaps more importantly, by the ascendance of neo-liberal ideology. By the late 1980s, the adverse effects of adjustment had become clear, and the resulting political opposition led many governments and their external supporters to design programmes meant to 'mitigate the social costs' of adjustment. The most visible of these are the 'social fund' or 'safety net' measures intended not only to address the social impacts of adjustment, but also to improve their social and political acceptability. In addition, they are seen by some as providing a model for new, more efficient and effective means of providing social service. This volume examines the goals, assumptions, impacts and possible long-term outcomes of social policy trends in developing countries.
