Book excerpt: These proceedings report the ever increasing interest and scientific case for the muon collider and the neutrino factory. There were intense sessions on the current design of neutrino factories in Europe, Japan, and in the USA, and there is growing evidence for a low-mass Higgs boson from the precision electroweak parameters to motivate the development of a Higgs factory. The twin themes of a neutrino factory and a Higgs factory have provided a possible plan for a future program in the USA. Some of the highlights of this conference were: The very latest news on the Higgs search at LEP II, the strong case for a low-mass Higgs, the push to find SUSY particles, the neutrino mass, the interesting possibility that the SuperKamiokande results could somehow be the result of neutrino decay, the beautiful arguments for a scalar collider, the summary of the future of CERN, and particle physics in general, and the overview of the Standard Model.

Book excerpt: Written by one of the detector developers for the International Linear Collider, this is the first textbook for graduate students dedicated to the complexities and the simplicities of high energy collider detectors. It is intended as a specialized reference for a standard course in particle physics, and as a principal text for a special topics course focused on large collider experiments. Equally useful as a general guide for physicists designing big detectors.

Book excerpt: We discuss the possible signatures in the electroweak symmetry breaking sector by new strong dynamics at future hadron colliders such as the Tevatron upgrade, the LHC and VLHC, and ee− linear colliders. Examples include a heavy Higgs-like scalar resonance, a heavy Technicolor-like vector resonance and pseudo-Goldstone states, non-resonance signatures via enhanced gauge-boson scattering and fermion compositeness.

Book excerpt: Muon Colliders provide a path to the energy frontier in particle physics but have been regarded to be 'at least 20 years away' for 20 years. I will review recent progress in design studies and hardware R & D and show that a Muon Collider can be established as a real option for the post-LHC era if the current vigorous R & D effort revitalized by the Muon Collider Task Force at Fermilab can be supported to its conclusion. All critical technologies are being addressed and no show-stoppers have emerged. Detector backgrounds have been studied in detail and appear to be manageable and the physics can be done with existing detector technology. A muon facility can be built through a staged scenario starting from a low-energy muon source with unprecedented intensity for exquisite reach for rare processes, followed by a Neutrino Factory with ultrapure neutrino beams with unparalleled sensitivity for disentangling neutrino mixing, leading to an energy frontier Muon Collider with excellent energy resolution.

Book excerpt: The proceedings of the Workshop on Physics at the First Muon Collider and at the Front End of a Muon Collider represent a unique collection of thoughts and ideas that will enable us to build a muon collider in the near future, as they do not exist yet. There are still outstanding problems in the areas of cooling muons sufficiently to produce high enough luminosities as well as in the area of detector backgrounds caused by muon decay. The work details significant progress in all these areas, leaving us optimistic in the assumption that the construction of the first muon collider may be feasible in the next decade. Muon colliders provide a unique opportunity to explore the properties of the Higgs Boson, which can be directly produced in the S channel only at the muon collider. The muon collider will also enable the search for supersymmetric partners of ordinary particles and significantly enhance our study of the properties of the top quark and the W boson. The production of large number of muons requires a high intensity proton accelerator, the so called front end, which will permit the production of intense beams of hadrons, neutrinos, and muons.

Book excerpt: In order to achieve peak luminosity of a Muon Collider (MC) in the 1035 cm−2s−1 range very small values of beta-function at the interaction point (IP) are necessary (?* ≤ 1 cm) while the distance from IP to the first quadrupole can not be made shorter than ≈6 m as dictated by the necessity of detector protection from backgrounds. In the result the beta-function at the final focus quadrupoles can reach 100 km making beam dynamics very sensitive to all kind of errors. In the present report we consider the effects on momentum acceptance and dynamic aperture of multipole field errors in the body of IR dipoles as well as of fringe-fields in both dipoles and quadrupoles in the ase of 1.5 TeV (c.o.m.) MC. Analysis shows these effects to be strong but correctable with dedicated multipole correctors.

Book excerpt: Recent progress in the study of muon colliders is presented. An international collaboration consisting of over 100 individuals is involved in calculations and experiments to demonstrate the feasibility of this new type of lepton collider. Theoretical efforts are now concentrated on low-energy colliders in the 100 to 500 GeV center-of-mass energy range. Credible machine designs are emerging for much of a hypothetical complex from proton source to the final collider. Ionization cooling has been the most difficult part of the concept, and more powerful simulation tools are now in place to develop workable schemes. A collaboration proposal for a muon cooling experiment has been presented to the Fermilab Physics Advisory Committee, and a proposal for a targetry and pion collection channel experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory is in preparation. Initial proton bunching and space-charge compensation experiments at existing hadron facilities have occurred to demonstrate proton driver feasibility.

Book excerpt: An accessible look at the hottest topic in physics and the experiments that will transform our understanding of the universe The biggest news in science today is the Large Hadron Collider, the world's largest and most powerful particle-smasher, and the anticipation of finally discovering the Higgs boson particle. But what is the Higgs boson and why is it often referred to as the God Particle? Why are the Higgs and the LHC so important? Getting a handle on the science behind the LHC can be difficult for anyone without an advanced degree in particle physics, but you don't need to go back to school to learn about it. In Collider, award-winning physicist Paul Halpern provides you with the tools you need to understand what the LHC is and what it hopes to discover. Comprehensive, accessible guide to the theory, history, and science behind experimental high-energy physics Explains why particle physics could well be on the verge of some of its greatest breakthroughs, changing what we think we know about quarks, string theory, dark matter, dark energy, and the fundamentals of modern physics Tells you why the theoretical Higgs boson is often referred to as the God particle and how its discovery could change our understanding of the universe Clearly explains why fears that the LHC could create a miniature black hole that could swallow up the Earth amount to a tempest in a very tiny teapot "Best of 2009 Sci-Tech Books (Physics)"-Library Journal "Halpern makes the search for mysterious particles pertinent and exciting by explaining clearly what we don't know about the universe, and offering a hopeful outlook for future research."-Publishers Weekly Includes a new author preface, "The Fate of the Large Hadron Collider and the Future of High-Energy Physics" The world will not come to an end any time soon, but we may learn a lot more about it in the blink of an eye. Read Collider and find out what, when, and how.
