Book excerpt: The research work involved a study of behaviour and strength of eccentrically loaded High Strength Concrete columns. The research comprised experimental and analytical components. With regard to experimental work, twelve columns were manufactured and tested to failure. All columns were rectangular in cross-section with 300 mm x 100 mm as dimensions. The test specimens were loaded about the minor axis. The ratio of longitudinal reinforcement was either 1.47% (4 - 12 mm diameter bars) or 2.2% (6 - 12 mm diameter bars). The lateral reinforcement was in the form of rectangular closed ties made of 6 mm wires (W6). The spacing of ties was generally 50 mm, but, was decreased to 30 mm, at either ends to avoid premature failure.

PREFACE THIS work is approximately one-third of a Treatise on the same subject which the author submitted in 1916 to the University of London as a thesis for the degree of D.Sc. Engineering. The Thesis, on which the author spent nine years on, it consisted of three parts I. Historical II. Analytical III. Synthetical. Owing to the conditions now prevailing, it has been found impossible to get the complete work published, and in the present volume the historical portion, which consisted of a short summary of each important memoir, including all the published experimental work, has been replaced by a Bibliography. This Bibliography has been brought up to date, and includes, it is believed, all the more important original work on the subject. Articles of secondary interest and repetitions of work previously published have not been included. Parts II and III have been reproduced practically as they stood in the original, except that notes have been added, where necessary, to bring the work up to date. In Part II the author has endeavoured to give a perfectly general analysis, leading to the consideration of such particular cases as were suggested by his reading. Some of these are well known, others are new. In particular, he has considered the commonest of all cases in practice, the imperfect direction-fixed column. The analysis for flat-ended, and especially that for lattice-braced columns will, he hopes, prove of value. Unnecessary mathematical refinement has been avoided, and simple approximations sought for practical use. This work has brought to light a number of interesting new points. His reasons for the terminology, symbols, and definitions employed are fully set out in the Preface to the Thesis, and are not reproduced here. In Part III an attempt has been made to collate what has been done on the subject, In this portion of the work the author has endeavoured to sum up in a readable form the teachings of both theory and experiment.

Book excerpt: The report is a study of the behavior of laterally unsupported as-rolled steel beam-columns under constant axial load and monotonically increasing strong-axis end moments. The first part presents the theoretical solutions for the occurrence of inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beam-columns with restraints provided at the ends to resist weak-axis bending and warping of the section. The solutions are based on either the tangent modulus concept or the reduced modulus concept of unloading of the yielded portions. The different degrees of restraints are studied and their beneficial effects are compared with the solutions for pinned-end beam-columns, free to warp and bend about the weak-axis. The theoretical solutions are then compared with the available test results and the CRC interaction formula. In the second part, the same method is extended to solve the buckling problems in continuous beam-columns with warping and weak-axis bending restraints at the joints. Sample numerical results are obtained for three-span continuous beam-columns. They are used to check the accuracy of the method currently recommended by the AISI and the AISC for predicting the buckling strength of an assembly of beams and beam-columns. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical guide to structural stability theory for the design of safe steel structures Not only does this book provide readers with a solid foundation in structural stability theory, it also offers them a practical, working knowledge of how this theory translates into design specifications for safe steel structures. Structural Stability of Steel features detailed discussions of the elastic and inelastic stability of steel columns, beams, beam-columns, and frames alongside numerous worked examples. For each type of structural member or system, the authors set forth recommended design rules with clear explanations of how they were derived. Following an introduction to the principles of stability theory, the book covers: * Stability of axially loaded planar elastic systems * Tangent-modulus, reduced-modulus, and maximum strength theories * Elastic and inelastic stability limits of planar beam-columns * Elastic and inelastic instability of planar frames * Out-of-plane, lateral-torsional buckling of beams, columns, and beam-columns The final two chapters focus on the application of stability theory to the practical design of steel structures, with special emphasis on examples based on the 2005 Specification for Structural Steel Buildings of the American Institute of Steel Construction. Problem sets at the end of each chapter enable readers to put their newfound knowledge into practice by solving actual instability problems. With its clear logical progression from theory to design implementation, this book is an ideal textbook for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students in structural engineering. Practicing engineers should also turn to this book for expert assistance in investigating and solving a myriad of stability problems.
