Book excerpt: "Despite the availability of healthcare resources and information, there continues to be significant disparities in stroke incidence and mortality among the African-American population. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ([CDC], 2017) reports that stroke costs the United States approximately $60 billion per year; affecting more than 795,000 Americans per year. African-Americans are twice as likely to die from a stroke; and the rate of first strokes are doubled that of Caucasians (National Stroke Association, 2017). Therefore, an evidenced-based practice (EBP) change project consisting of a culturally-tailored educational intervention was implemented in a predominately African-American church. The purpose of the EBP change project was to increase stroke knowledge and awareness among the African-American population. Providing health education within a religious organization, has been shown to improve the health status of the African-American population. The EBP change project included 87 participants, of which 66% were African-American. The Revised Stroke Knowledge Questionnaire was used to assess pre-test and post-test stroke knowledge. The intervention was found to have a positive impact by increasing group mean knowledge scores by 36 to 40%. This increase in aggregate group mean scores exceeded the set benchmark of 12%. It affects more than 795,000 people and cost greater than 38 billion dollars annually. Women experience stroke more than men, and African Americans have been found to have greater risk for stroke. Many strokes can be prevented through the recognition and control of risk factors. Stroke awareness includes having knowledge of risk factors and understanding how to control the risk. Additionally, recognition of stroke warning signs and symptoms is essential to early intervention, treatment, and reduction of disability and death. The purpose of this study was to examine African American women's knowledge of stroke risk factors and warning signs. A descriptive quantitative survey design was utilized to answer the study question. A convenience sample (n= 33) of African American women from a suburban town in South Carolina, a county located in the southeastern region of the United States, was included in this study. Leventhal's Common Sense Model was utilized as the theoretical framework to determine the ability of persons to appraise their stroke risk and to establish coping methods for the prevention or treatment seeking behaviors. The results of the study may provide a better understanding of the educational needs of minority groups specifically those of women and racial/ethnic groups.

Book excerpt: Abstract The historical treatment of African Americans with events such as the Tuskegee experiment and Jim Crow laws combined with distrust of the healthcare system may be affecting health outcomes in African Americans with hypertension. Cultural appropriate education by a provider of the same race is a method that can be utilized to bridge the trust gap between African Americans and providers and assist African Americans in managing their hypertension. A community based culturally appropriate educational intervention by a provider of the same race was implemented over the course of eight weeks to assist African Americans with hypertension to improve their lifestyle behaviors and lower their blood pressure. Twenty African American participants were recruited from a church and within the community to participate. Blood pressures were obtained from participants and they completed the High Blood Pressure Self-care profile (HBP SCP) Behavior Scale pre intervention and post intervention at week nine. Participants were given the culturally appropriate education and a brochure at the start of the project and received a phone call every other week to provide verbal persuasion, motivate, and answer questions. Using a purposive sample of experimental and control African American freshmen enrolled in a health education course at Morgan State University, this study analyze socio-demographic and health/specific variables, identified through a comprehensive review of the literature, as they relate to student attitudes toward risk factors for Cardiovascular Heart Disease (CVD). Methodology. The study utilized a classic Experimental-Control Group Research Design with a pre and posttest format. A pilot test of the data collection instrument was conducted in the Summer 2002 and several revisions were made to the instrument. The final study utilized a 5 point Likert-type scale to measure the variability of the dependent variable in an interrupted time series design with pre- and post-test attitudinal measures taken before and after exposure to educational/instructional material. Data were gathered via administration of an adapted version of the National College Health Risk Behavior Survey (NCHRBS) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Attitudinal change in the two groups was compared longitudinally with the data analyzed via a paired T-Test as the primary mode of statistical analysis and presumed causality was analyzed via Multiple Regression Analysis as the secondary mode of statistical analysis. Findings. The T value of -19.040 significance was well below the .05 level of statistical significance. The control group did not achieve the level of significance. Subsequent analysis via linear regression identified two variables. The variables were "Students' Personal CVD Health" and "Number of Hours Students Worked" as indicators of causality. Findings from this study have implications for the design and development of health educational intervention materials related to CVD and behavioral modification necessary to deal with a major national health disparity area.-- Abstract.
