Book excerpt: A genius is abducted by an alien bounty-hunter for the location of a powerful inter-dimensional object. Trouble is, he can’t remember a thing. Ben isn’t exactly a genius, but he has an immense breadth of knowledge. Whether it’s natural science (specifically the intricacies of bug sex), or vintage timepieces, he can spout facts and information with the best of experts. He just can’t explain why he knows any of it. Another thing he knows is the location of the Chime. What it is or why it’s important, he can’t say. But this knowledge is about to get him in a whole heap of trouble, as a trash-talking, flesh construct bounty hunter is on his tail and looking to sell him to the highest bidder. And being able to describe the mating habits of Brazilian bark lice won't be enough to get him out of it. Book excerpt: A strain-energy method is presented for computing the compressive load for lateral elastic instability of hat-section stringers of simple cross section whose side walls and tops are flat and of constant thickness. Buckling stresses for such stringers having five different shapes and a range of lengths were computed by this method. The results confirm the opinion that lateral instability is an unlikely cause of failure for hat-section stringers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is one of the first ethnographic works on small-town stringers or informal news workers in Indian journalism. It explores existing practices and cultures in the field of local journalism and the roles and spaces stringers occupy. The book outlines the caste, gender, class and region-based biases in the production of Indian-language journalism with a specific focus on stringers working in Telugu dailies in small towns or ‘mofussil’ areas of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, states in south India. Further, it captures their daily work and processes of news production, and the precarious lives they often lead while working in small towns or mofussils. The author, by using Bourdieu’s field theory, introduces the journalistic practices of stringers working on the margins and how they negotiate the complex hierarchies that exist within the journalistic field and outside it. This book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of ethnography, media sociology, journalism and media studies, labour studies and Area studies, especially South Asian studies.

Master Stair Builder - Greg Vanden Berge will share some of the extraordinary fundamentals as well as advanced techniques, few carpenters in the world are familiar with. This is a one-of-a-kind book and was written in a simple and easy to understand format. There are plenty of illustrations and even my wife, who is extremely skeptical about my other books said this was one of the best books I've written so far. This book was written for carpenters, contractors and even sophisticated do-it-yourselfers. I don't recommend this book to anyone who doesn't understand the fundamentals of stair building.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method has been devised for the rating of the quality of production grade uranium metal by microscopic stringer counting. The basis of the method is to count the total length of stringers in a polished sample at 100 magnification with the aid of a one-half inch square ruled grid screen. Simplification of the method allows the substitution of standard rating charts for comparison with the sample under observation. The rating method as applied to 40 disc samples from two months production of uranium metal was able to distinguish a difference in the quality of metal as produced by two manufacturers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural concrete designers nowadays distinguish between B-regions (named after Bernoulli beam theory) and D-regions (D standing for ‘disturbed’). They are all familiar with B-regions, but less acquainted with the expertise required for D-regions. To design D-regions, the Strut-and-Tie Model (STM) is usually applied, a model laid down worldwide in structural codes of practice. The Stringer-Panel Model (SPM) recommended here is a companion method to the STM, with the advantage of being suitable for different load cases and reversed loading. This being so, the SPM is suitable for linear-elastic analyses where durability is a key consideration, but also suits structural design for contexts of cyclical seismic activity. Finally, this book sets out how structural engineers who prefer the STM can nevertheless apply the SPM to determine a proper strut-and-tie model.
