Certam neither Augustine, Rousseau, nor Tolstoy have laid bare their souls to the finest fibre with more ruthless than the great Swedish realist. He fulfilled to the letter the saying of Robertson of Brighton, Woman and God are two rocks on which a man must either anchor or be wreck His four autobiographical works, The Son of a Servant, The Confessions of a Fool, Inferno, and Legends, are four sege ments of an immense curve tracing his progress from the childish pietism of his early years, through a period of atheism and rebellion, to the sombre faith in a God that punishes of the sexagenarian. In his spiritual wanderings he grazed the edge of madness, and madmen Often see deeper into things than ordinary folk. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Son of a Servant From the Publication of The Son of a Servant to The Inferno (1886 - 1896) A celebrated statesman is said to have described the biography of a cardinal as being like the Judgment Day. In reading August Strindberg's autobiographical writings, as, for example, his Inferno, and the book for which this study is a preface, we must remember that he portrays his own Judgment Day. And as his works have come but lately before the great British public, it may be well to consider what attitude should be adopted to wards the amazing candour of his self-revelation. In most provinces Of life other than the comprehension Of our fellows, the art Of understanding is making great progress. We com prehend new phenomena without the Old strain upon our capacity for readjusting our point Of View. But do we equally well understand our fellow-being whose way of life is not ours? We are patient towards new phases Of philosophy, new discoveries in science, new sociological facts, Observed in other lands; but in considering an abnormal type of man or woman, hasty judgment or a too contracted outlook is still liable to cloud the judgment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Confession of a Fool The republication of The Confession of a Fool represents the last link in the chain of Strindberg's autobiographical novels. A German version of the book was published as far back as 1893, but it was mutilated, abbreviated, corrupted, and falsified to such an extent that the attorney-general, misled by the revolting language, blamed the author for the misdeeds of the translator and prohibited the sale of the book. This was a splendid advertisement for this profound work, but there were many who would have rejoiced if the translation had been completely ignored. It distorted Strindberg's character and was the cause of many prejudices which exist to this day. Schering's new translation is an attempt to make reparation for this crime. "It is impossible," he says, "that any attorney-general can now doubt the high morality of this book." Strindberg himself has called it a terrible book, and has regretted that he ever wrote it. He has never published it in Swedish, his own language, because not only is it too personal in character, but it also revealed a still bleeding wound. It contains the relentless description of his first marriage, so superbly candid an account, that one is reminded of the last testament of a man for whom death has no longer any terror. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her long-awaited book, the legendary acting teacher Stella Adler gives us her extraordinary insights into the work of Henrik Ibsen ("The creation of the modern theater took a genius like Ibsen. . .Miller and Odets, Inge and O'Neill, Williams and Shaw, swallowed the whole of him"), August Strindberg ("He understood and predicted the forces that would break in our lives"), and Anton Chekhov ("Chekhov doesn't want a play, he wants what happens in life. In life, people don't usually kill each other. They talk"). Through the plays of these masters, Adler discusses the arts of playwriting and script interpretation ("There are two aspects of the theater. One belongs to the author and the other to the actor. The actor thinks it all belongs to the author. . .The curtain goes up and all he knows are the lines. . .It is not enough. . .Script interpretation is your profession"). She looks into aspects of society and class, and into our cultural past, as well as the evolution of the modern spirit ("The actor learns from Ibsen what is modern in the modern theater. There are no villains, no heroes. Ibsen understands, more than anything, there is more than one truth"). Stella Adler--daughter of Jacob Adler, who was universally acknowledged to be the greatest actor of the Yiddish theater, and herself a disciple of Stanislavsky--examines the role of the actor and brings to life the plays from which all modern theater derives: Ibsen's Hedda Gabler, The Master Builder, An Enemy of the People, and A Doll's House; Strindberg's Miss Julie and The Father; Chekhov's The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, The Cherry Orchard, and Three Sisters ("Masha is the sister who is the mystery. You cannot reach her. You cannot reach the artist. There is no logical way. Keep her in a special pocket of feelings that are complex and different"). Adler discusses the ideas behind these plays and explores the world of the playwrights and the history--both familial and cultural--that informed their work. She illumines not only the dramatic essence of each play but its subtext as well, continually asking questions that deepen one's understanding of the work and of the human spirit. Adler's book, brilliantly edited by Barry Paris, puts her famous lectures into print for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plays, Vol. 1 To the first volume of his remarkable series of autobiograph ical novels, August Strindberg gave the name of The Bond woman's Son. The allusion was twofold - to his birth and to the position which fate, in his own eyes, seemed to have assigned him both as man and artist. If we pass on to the third part of his big trilogy, To Damas cus, also an autobiographical work, but written nearly twenty years later, we find The Stranger, who is none but the author, saying: I was the Bondwoman's Son, concerning whom it was writ Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the free woman's son.' And The Lady, back of whom we glimpse Strindberg's sec ond wife, replies: Do you know why Ishmael was cast out? It is to be read a little further back - because he was a scot fer! And then it is also said: 'he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in opposition to all his breth ren.' These quotations should be read in conjunction with still another, taken from Strindberg's latest play, The Great Highway, which, while being a sort of symbolical summary of his life experience, yet pierces the magic circle of self concern within which too often he has remained a captive. There The Hermit asks: You do not love your fellow men P And Strindberg, masquerading as The Hunter, cries in answer: Yes, far too much, and fear them for that reason, too. August Strindberg was born at Stockholm, Sweden, on January 22, 1849. His father was a small tradesman, who had lost his business just before August was born, but who had the energy and ability to start all over again as a steam ship agent, making a decided success of his second venture. The success, however, was slow in coming, and the boy's earliest years were spent in the worst kind of poverty - that poverty which has to keep up outward appearances. The "execution" in 1898 referred to was the spiritual crisis through which Strindberg passed when he emerged from the abysmal pessimism of "The Inferno;" then began the gradual return to spiritual faith which, in the end, caused him to declare himself a Swedenborgian. The play, "Easter," included in the present collection, belongs to this period; it is a strange / mingling of symbolism and realism, bearing the spiritual message of the resurrection. It was the most popular play produced at the Intimate Theatre in Stockholm, having been given there over two hundred times; and in Germany, also, it has been one of the plays most appreciated. That "Easter" is representative of the last phase, spiritually, of the great man is evidenced by the closing incident of his life. His favorite daughter, Kirtlin, was in the room as death approached. Strindberg called to her, and asked for the Bible; receiving the book, he opened it, and placing it across his breast, said, "This is the best book of all," and then, with his last breath, "Now everything personal is obliterated."
