Book excerpt: Apparel manufacturing in the American South, by virtue of its size, its reliance upon female labor, and its broad geographic scope, is an important but often overlooked industry that connects the disparate concerns of women's history, southern cultural history, and labor history. In Striking Beauties, Michelle Haberland examines its essential features and the varied experiences of its workers during the industry's great expansion from the late 1930s through the demise of its southern branch at the end of the twentieth century. The popular conception of the early twentieth-century South as largely agrarian informs many histories of industry and labor in the United States. But as Haberland demonstrates, the apparel industry became a key part of the southern economy after the Great Depression and a major driver of southern industrialization. The gender and racial composition of the workforce, the growth of trade unions, technology, and capital investment were all powerful forces in apparel's migration south. Yet those same forces also revealed the tensions caused by racial and gender inequities not only in the region but in the nation at large. Striking Beauties places the struggles of working women for racial and economic justice in the larger context of southern history. The role of women as the primary consumers of the family placed them in a critical position to influence the success or failure of boycotts, union label programs and ultimately solidarity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to focus on the intersection of Western philosophy and the Asian martial arts, Striking Beauty comparatively studies the historical and philosophical traditions of martial arts practice and their ethical value in the modern world. Expanding Western philosophy's global outlook, the book forces a theoretical reckoning with the concerns of Chinese philosophy and the aesthetic and technical dimensions of martial arts practice. Striking Beauty explains the relationship between Asian martial arts and the Chinese philosophical traditions of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism, in addition to Sunzi's Art of War. It connects martial arts practice to the Western concepts of mind-body dualism and materialism, sports aesthetics, and the ethics of violence. The work ameliorates Western philosophy's hostility toward the body, emphasizing the pleasure of watching and engaging in martial arts, along with their beauty and the ethical problem of their violence.

Book excerpt: A Rose Without a Thorn, by Marilyn Kohinke Washburn, offers a powerful and intriguing look inside the tumultuous; and too often, bloody Royal Court of King Henry VIII. Set in 16th century England, King Henry's kingdom is in the throes of the Protestant Reformation, while his Royal Court is in desperate search of a new Queen and male heir to secure the Tudor line. King Henry has already divorced his first wife and beheaded his second, causing many ladies of his court to pray he does not set his cap for them. Nevertheless powerful patriarchs of both Protestant and Catholic factions at court are in strong pursuit of King Henry to marry a woman of their own choosing and beget a male heir by her, whether or not the woman they choose wishes to wed King Henry VIII. In a time when religious freedom was nonexistent, and when women were still considered their husband's property, timeless motivators such as love, hate, greed, jealousy, betrayal, and hubris were very much in existence. The stage is thus set for the rise and fall of many powerful courtiers close to King Henry VIII, including those he once passionately vowed his enduring love for. King Henry VIII had a tumultuous reign, where many heads rolled, culminating in a bloody finale for all those who crossed his unforgiving path. In this fascinating offering of historical fiction, get a closer look at a vengeful Henry VIII and the men and women behind his powerful throne as they rose and fell at the vain and whimsical mercy of tyrant, who ruled absolutely.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a revisionist account of poetry and embodiment from Milton to Romanticism. Scholars have made much of the period's theories of matter, with some studies equating the eighteenth century's modernity with its materialism. Yet the Enlightenment in Britain also brought bold new arguments for the immateriality of spirit and evocative claims about an imminent spirit realm. Protestant religious writing was of two minds about futurity, swinging back and forth between patience for the resurrected body and desire for the released soul. This ancient pattern carried over, the book argues, into understandings of poetry as a modern devotional practice. A range of authors agreed that poems can provide a foretaste of the afterlife, but they disagreed about what kind of future state the imagination should seek. The mortalist impulse—exemplified by John Milton and by Romantic poets Anna Letitia Barbauld and William Wordsworth—is to overcome the temptation of disembodiment and to restore spirit to its rightful home in matter. The spiritualist impulse—driving eighteenth-century verse by Mark Akenside, Elizabeth Singer Rowe, and Edward Young—is to break out of bodily repetition and enjoy the detached soul's freedom in advance. Although the study isolates these two tendencies, each needed the other as a source in the Enlightenment, and their productive opposition didn't end with Romanticism. The final chapter identifies an alternative Romantic vision that keeps open the possibility of a disembodied poetics, and the introduction considers present-day Anglophone writers who put it into practice.
