Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressure vessels are closed containers designed to hold gases or liquids at a pressure substantially different from the ambient pressure. They have a variety of applications in industry, including in oil refineries, nuclear reactors, vehicle airbrake reservoirs, and more. The pressure differential with such vessels is dangerous, and due to the risk of accident and fatality around their use, the design, manufacture, operation and inspection of pressure vessels is regulated by engineering authorities and guided by legal codes and standards. Pressure Vessel Design Manual is a solutions-focused guide to the many problems and technical challenges involved in the design of pressure vessels to match stringent standards and codes. It brings together otherwise scattered information and explanations into one easy-to-use resource to minimize research and take readers from problem to solution in the most direct manner possible. - Covers almost all problems that a working pressure vessel designer can expect to face, with 50+ step-by-step design procedures including a wealth of equations, explanations and data - Internationally recognized, widely referenced and trusted, with 20+ years of use in over 30 countries making it an accepted industry standard guide - Now revised with up-to-date ASME, ASCE and API regulatory code information, and dual unit coverage for increased ease of international use

Book excerpt: Learn the science behind stress and start living better Stress can kill. Chronic stress has been linked to depression, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Left untreated it can cause serious and long-lasting health problems. Drawing on two decades of clinical research into the effects of stress on the brain and the body, For the Love of Stress is designed to help you learn to control your stress and live a happier, healthier life. Dr. Sonia Lupien is internationally respected as a leading authority on the science of stress, and in this practical, accessible book she provides an essential guide to understanding and managing the stresses we face every day. Identifying the four factors that underlie any stressful situation: Novelty—something new and unfamiliar; Unpredictability—not knowing how something is going to unfold; Threat—to your sense of self; and a poor Sense of self control, Dr. Lupien uses the appropriate acronym "N.U.T.S." to explore how stress makes us feel and how we can learn to cope. Helps the reader understand the science behind stress, how it affects us physically and mentally, and what we can do to keep it in check Explores why men make women's stress hormone levels rise but women cause men's stress hormone levels to drop Provides proven solutions for dealing with stress, including one for helping children to cope with moving schools as well as stress in the workplace Contrary to common belief stress is not simply "time pressure" or "workload" but rather our natural response to these things, characterized by the release of stress hormones Shows readers how a routine blood test can identify if you are at risk from high levels of stress hormones In her practical and accessible book Dr. Lupien shows how stress can and should be controlled, not avoided.

This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advantages of high strength, lightweight, no corrosion and excellent fatigue resistance, Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) cables have the potential to replace steel cables in a broad range of applications. The ideal structures for such cables are highly pre-tensioned cable systems that are loaded orthogonally to their cable axes. This type of structures with CFRP cables, such as cable net facades, spoked wheel cable roofs and stressed-ribbon bridges, can be built economically with large or small spans. This book is the first in the world to demonstrate the advantages of using CFRP cables in orthogonally loaded cable structures, including detailed analyses of mechanical properties and economic efficiencies. Furthermore, in order to solve the anchorage problem which hinders the application of CFRP cables, two new CFRP cable anchorages, especially suitable for orthogonally loaded cable structures, are proposed in this book. In addition, a prototype of CFRP spoked wheel cable roof built by the author is presented to show the feasibility of CFRP orthogonally loaded cable structures based on the present technology; a novel design, i.e. the CFRP Continuous Band Winding System, is also conceptually introduced, so as to show a feasible form of CFRP orthogonally loaded cable structures in the future. This book is written to encourage the use of CFRP cables and show that CFRP cable structures are feasible and have advantages over steel cable structures. It will be read by researchers of structural engineering and by consulting engineers.

Book excerpt: This book analyses the current knowledge on structural behaviour of RC elements and structures strengthened with composite materials (experimental, analytical and numerical approaches for EBR and NSM), particularly in relation to the above topics, and the comparison of the predictions of the current available codes/recommendations/guidelines with selected experimental results. The book shows possible critical issues (discrepancies, lacunae, relevant parameters, test procedures, etc.) related to current code predictions or to evaluate their reliability, in order to develop more uniform methods and basic rules for design and control of FRP strengthened RC structures. General problems/critical issues are clarified on the basis of the actual experiences, detect discrepancies in existing codes, lacunae in knowledge and, concerning these identified subjects, provide proposals for improvements. The book will help to contribute to promote and consolidate a more qualified and conscious approach towards rehabilitation and strengthening existing RC structures with composites and their possible monitoring.
