Book excerpt: The U.S. military has been continuously engaged in foreign conflicts for over two decades. The strains that these deployments, the associated increases in operational tempo, and the general challenges of military life affect not only service members but also the people who depend on them and who support them as they support the nation â€" their families. Family members provide support to service members while they serve or when they have difficulties; family problems can interfere with the ability of service members to deploy or remain in theater; and family members are central influences on whether members continue to serve. In addition, rising family diversity and complexity will likely increase the difficulty of creating military policies, programs and practices that adequately support families in the performance of military duties. Strengthening the Military Family Readiness System for a Changing American Society examines the challenges and opportunities facing military families and what is known about effective strategies for supporting and protecting military children and families, as well as lessons to be learned from these experiences. This report offers recommendations regarding what is needed to strengthen the support system for military families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strengthening families of different varieties and ending abuse in the myriad of forms through which it surfaces is God's way of bringing peace and safety to Christian homes across the world. We challenge congregations, their leaders, and the men, women, and youth who faithfully support them to consider their personal role in bringing this vision--inspired by the Scriptures--into reality. Together our voices can be strong. We are united in our belief that every home should be a safe home, every home a shelter from the storms of life, every home a place where we are supported, treated with respect and dignity, and every home a place where men and women are encouraged to be all they can be. It is a tall order. It is a dream to guide our personal conduct and to measure our congregational and community life. We are far from reaching this goal--but toward it we strive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you remember the television show Family Matters? I've often wondered what the title actually meant. Did it mean that the family was important, or did it mean that they were going to address issues of the family? In reality, both of those answers are true, and that is exactly what this book addresses. The goal of this book to strengthen our families by helping us realize how important we are to God and learning how to incorporate Him into our daily life issues. You are going to see that many Christian families have unintentionally lost their biblical grip on the home; however, this book will give easy strategies to get it back. God simply wants us to worship Him every day and teach our kids to worship Him every day. One of the first things you will learn is to destroy the mythical definition of the word worship. Society has made us believe that we can't worship God without professional church help; therefore, we cannot effectively worship in our homes. Most people associate worship with an organized activity that usually takes place inside a church building. Worship takes place anytime one's attention is focused on God. This includes prayer, reading Scripture, listening to preaching, and simply talking about God with others. The thought of family worship as an organized nightly event that includes all elements of a church service has to be eliminated. Families who do this are to be commended; on the other hand, most families are intimidated by this and therefore decide to do nothing at all. This book will teach you how to routinely engage your family with God and strengthen your relationships with Him and each other. God will help you deal with family matters because family matters to Him.

Book excerpt: Including a foreword by Henry Louis Gates Jr., Opening Up is a chronicle of the struggles and triumphs of families suffering the internalized stresses from poverty, domestic abuse, racism, and neighborhood violence, among other challenges. Through Parenting Journey these families resolve harmful habits and identify their strengths to raise their children in a healthier environment. Anne Peretz tells the story of this bold organization and flagship therapeutic group program that takes a different approach to helping families in need. Told through the perspectives of the families who have participated over the decades, Opening Up challenges readers to think differently about family. These stories view symptoms of stress, fear, and hopelessness that extend throughout generations as remediable and how even the severely traumatized can regain stability. This book is a testament that with mutual respect, compassion, and openness, together we can address the personal and systemic injustices that are at the roots of many of these patterns and together we can rebuild these communities.
