Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Best American Short Plays). For more than 70 years, The Best American Short Plays has been the standard of excellence for one-act plays in America. From its inception, it has identified cutting-edge playwrights Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee, and others who have gone on to establish award-winning careers. The Best American Short Plays 2013-2014 takes a look at our changing times. "Uncertain" seems to be the watchword of today's world, full of surprises, shocks, and even a few delights. Uncertainty brings with it fear and insecurity, as well as nostalgic longing for the good old days, but for some, uncertainty means opportunity and along with it the prospect of change for the better. This volume explores various experiences of uncertainty and includes a series of nine plays gathered by Daniel Gallant, entitled Nine Signs of the Times , as well as short plays by Neil LaBute, John Guare, Laura Shaine Cunningham, Daniel F. Levin, Quincy Long, Halley Feiffer, Caridad Svich, and Clay McLeod Chapman. This collection will be complemented by a range of plays from around the country by playwrights likewise observing and digesting the signs of the times. Together the plays of this volume work as a time capsule, capturing the fears and longings of a world on the verge and in the midst of big changes, hopefully for the better but quite possibly for the worse.

Parents and four children land in Philadelphia to begin anew. Aidan and Susan Curran begin in a society unfriendly to the Irish. Through determination and hard work, they eventually improve their lot and become people of substance. The children go on to their own lives. One becomes a Catholic nun, one a teacher. The two men start small in real estate and eventually own a good portion of South Philadelphia. They have their trials and tribulations, become involved with the business classes of the city and move on to better things. One son has a child who is affl icted with asthma, causing them to build a home on the South Jersey coast to ease the symptoms. The home originally a summer cottage, fi gures greatly in their lives ever after. The son grows up to be somewhat of a genius. He goes to medical school and opens a practice. He marries and raises fi ve children. During his lifetime he becomes adept at the practice of medicine, pharmacy, painting and poetry. He conquers several languages and becomes an amateur boxer. He joins the Army Medical Corp in 1918 and leaves his four children and a wife expecting a fi fth, to go to war. While stationed in France he is decorated as well as wounded. He returns at wars end to fi nd his only son has acquired the same symptoms he had as a boy. For the childs health, they decide to move permanently to the Jersey shore. He opens a practice there and all through the 1920s life goes on in a calm wonderful way, although he is aware of some nagging seemingly minor medical problems. The Depression comes and he fi nds that during the war, when his wife was the only one to answer to, his lawyers and bankers had robbed him blind. From a life style of wealth and comfort the family is forced to go on Relief to get food on the table. The doctor looses all his real estate to taxes, treats his patients for free and experiences faltering health. All they have left to their name is the house at the shore. The doctor fi nally realizes that the mustard gas he was exposed to has been killing him ever since he was in the army. At his death, the fi ve children who grew up to expect life would always be good and comfortable, have to change their lifestyles. A challenge when none were prepared to do so. The story does not have a happy ending. But no one ever said life was fair. The house at the shore is the only survivor

Book excerpt: A son comes of age in a fiercely political world "Thomas Fleming gives us an unforgettable story about an immigrant family—his family—as it struggles to find a place in the American century. He shares with us the dreams and heartaches of his parents, and, in the end, he reminds us of the mysterious and forgiving power of love." —Terry Golway, author of The Irish in America "A truly moving story of a lifelong duel between father and son, Mysteries of My Father also vibrates with the great good humor that grows out of ward politics, and pulses with the heartfelt drama of a family just getting by. There were some bad times in the Fleming family story, but Tom Fleming prevails to the good times, and the best time is left to the reader. What a wonderful time I had reading this book." —Dennis Smith, author of the Report from Engine Co. 82 and Report from Ground Zero "A well-written, fascinating political history." —Margaret Truman, author of Murder at Union Station "With a historian's fidelity and a poet's empathy, Tom Fleming has created a textured study of three generations of Irish-Americans, whose clashing spiritual values inform their integration into New Jersey's social and political hierarchy. Mysteries of My Father is an American classic achieved by a master storyteller's talents for exploring the tensions and bonds between a father and his sons. Among the literary wonders of this brisk and moving memoir is the father's emergence as a seminal American character—brusque and pragmatic, yet capable of expected tenderness to his sons." —Sidney Offit, author of Memoir of the Bookie's Son "If you care about what it means to be an Irish-American, or about New Jersey political history, or about the relationships between fathers and sons, or about wonderful writing, run—don't walk—out to buy Tom Fleming's Mysteries of My Father." —Nick Acocella, publisher of Politifax

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hard to believe it looking at her now, but Rose West was an exceptionally beautiful little girl, with a Maltese mother and English father. Strangers would stop and stare at her in the street and she could entrance people from a very early age. But looking back at photos of Rose as a child, you struggle to accept that she grew up to one of the country's most notorious female criminals. In ROSE, Jane Carter Woodrow goes right back to the start in her life to try and piece together what happened to turn Rose West into the violent monster she became. Jane has gained unprecedented access to the family and has revealed a fascinating story of how there was always something 'not quite right' about Rose... And perhaps that's not too surprising... Rose's childhood reads like one of the most grim misery memoirs. Her father was a violent schizophrenic and her mother received electric shock therapy for severe clinical depression, the whole way through her pregnancy with Rose. Jane has uncovered a horrific hidden story of a twisted family and how her upbringing made her a perfect partner for Fred West when they met when Rose had just turned 16. She was to kill for the first time a few months later. This is a gripping, unputdownable read that sheds light for the first time on the story behind what turned Rose West into one of the country's most vicious and deadly serial killers.

Forget about political correctness. This is a true story that takes you into the heart of wastaland, where whom you know gets you where you want to be, where haute couture garments rub shoulders with the spirit of the Middle Ages and where women are still bought and sold and consigned to a life of obedience or else! Step into the land of oil and the riches it brings and prepare to be shocked by what you learn.
