Book excerpt: The nonlinear instability of the boundary layer on a heated flat plate placed in an oncoming flow is investigated. Such flows are unstable to stationary vortex instabilities and inviscid traveling wave disturbances governed by the Taylor-Goldstein equation. For small temperature differences the Taylor-Goldstein equation reduces to Rayleigh's equation. When the temperature difference between the wall and free stream is small the preferred mode of instability is a streamwise vortex. It is shown in this case that the vortex, assumed to be of small wavelength, restructures the underlying mean flow to produce a profile which can be massively unstable to inviscid traveling waves. The mean state is shown to be destabilized or stabilized to inviscid waves depending on whether the Prandtl number is less or greater than unity. Book excerpt: The present investigation is concerned with the swirling inlet flow in a cylindrical tube and the heat transfer in the entrance region. This is a chosen model problem for the Gortler-type vortices which occur in boundary layer flow in order to gain more insight in the mechanism of vortices with their axes in the streamwise directions. Conclusions are being drawn on the final breakdown of the Gortler-type vortex system and the dependence on the Reynolds' number and the Prandtl number of the increase in heat transfer rates is brought out. The findings suggest that the vortex motion alone is not responsible for the large increases in heat transfer rates which have been observed. The induced motion which is created by such vortices in boundary layers is suggested as the possible mechanism responsible. (Author).

Book excerpt: Several experiments have suggested that the streamwise vortices, with their accompanying low momentum streaks, in a turbulent boundary layer have a characteristic spanwise wavelength of approximately lambda (superscript + subscript z) = 100. A mechanism is proposed which selects a comparable spanwise wavelength and produces counterrotating streamwise vortices in a turbulent boundary layer. Examining the equations which describe the small deviation of the velocity field from its time-average, it is found that the Benney-Gustavsson resonance (Studies in Applied Mathematics 3, 1981) occurs with such a boundary layer velocity profile. It is shown that, as an integral part of this resonance, there is a mean secondary flow which has a spanwise wavelength lambda (superscript +, subscript z) = 90 and whose velocities exhibit a counter-rotating streamwise vortex structure. Some, but not all previous studies suggest that a large-scale, stationary array of counter-rotating vortices exists within the turbulent boundary layer on a concave wall. The objective of the present study was to obtain a qualitative model of the flow field in order to increase our understanding of the underlying physics. A large free-surface water channel was constructed in order to perform a visual study of the flow. Streamwise components of mean velocity and turbulence intensity were measured using a hot film anemometer. The upstream boundary was spanwise uniform with a momentum thickness to radius of curvature of 0.05. Compared to flat wall flow, large-scale, randomly distributed sweeps and ejections were seen in the boundary layer on the concave wall. The sweeps appear to suppress the normal mechanism for turbulence production near the wall by inhibiting the bursting process. The ejections appear to enhance turbulence production in the outer layers as the low speed fluid convected from regions near the wall interacts with the higher speed fluid farther out. The large-scale structures did not occur at fixed spanwise locations, and could not be called roll cells or vortices. (Author).
