Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 23 (thesis year 1978) a total of 10,148 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 220 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 23 reports these submitted in 1978, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: The Gething Formation in northeastern British Columbia has long been of economic interest as a potential source of thermal and metallurgical coal. This report, which is based on 20 field sections, 34 coal exploration borehole cores and 19 geophysical and lithological well logs from petroleum exploration boreholes, describes the regional geology of the formation and provides detailed information and data on lithofacies, lithofacies relationships, age and correlation of important lithostratigraphic marker units, the distribution of coal seams and the depositional setting.

Book excerpt: Within the Lewis study area, McMurray Formation strata comprise 4 facies associations that form a depositional continuum of braided-fluvial (FA1), tidally-influenced braided- to low-accommodation meandering-fluvial and meandering-tidal channel-fills (FA2), associated overbank (FA3), and open-estuarine tidal flat deposits (FA4). The primary reservoir occurs in transgressive FA2 deposits. Lower-FA2 channels incise older water-wet FA1sand and consist of medium to locally-coarse, bitumen-saturated sand with rare to locally common pin-stripe laminated and/or 1--5 cm thick mud beds. Channels were initially confined by steep valley walls formed along the sub-Cretaceous unconformity. As a consequence, coeval interchannel sediment (FA3) was cannibalized by lateral channel migration and occurs only as common mud-clasts. The net result was the accumulation of a sand-rich, sheet-like deposit with locally-preserved fine-grained interchannel deposits, suggesting a high rate of lateral versus vertical accretion. With the filling and elimination of the irregular paleotopography along the unconformity, upper-FA2 channels became unconfined and formed thick, areally extensive inclined heterolithic stratification (IHS) deposits. Similarly, coeval interchannel deposits are more widely-distributed and thickly preserved compared to underlying strata. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

This book was released on 1985 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report is based on field work undertaken during the summer of 1974. Thirty-three rotary cores were examined and sampled in detail as a means of providing data on 1) the facies and facies relationships, and 2) the distribution, thickness, and continuity of coal seams in the Gething Formation within a very limited area of the western Foothills. Sedimentary structures and other sedimentological data were also recorded to aid in describing and interpreting the depositional environments and history of deposition in the area.

Book excerpt: Uppermost parasequences of the Grand Rapids Formation and Upper Mannville Group record progradation of open-coast wave/storm-dominated deltas in the west, passing eastward into brackish-water bay-head deltas. Distributary channel deposits occur in close proximity to both settings. Stratigraphic cross-sections indicate that autocyclic delta lobe switching occurred in both delta types. Open-coast deltas contain low-diversity trace fossil suites consisting of slightly more robust ichnogenera, most of whom reflect opportunistic colonization of storm beds. Ichnogenera typical of more marine conditions are sporadically distributed, indicating that environments were not as persistently salinity stressed as in the east. Bay-head deltas in brackish-water settings display the lowest trace fossil diversities and pronounced size reductions. Facies lack ichnogenera associated with more marine conditions. Brackish-bay deposits are the most intensely burrowed, attesting to low deposition rates. Ichnological diversities are slightly greater than in bay-head delta deposits, reflecting less marked salinity fluctuations in persistently brackish-water conditions.

Bloch and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colorado Group is the thickest and most regionally extensive succession of Cretaceous rocks in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. Colorado Group shales contain proven source rocks and hydrocarbon reserves, yet the details of their origin, composition, distribution, and maturity are largely unknown. This report presents research undertaken to address this knowledge gap and to identify distinct shale units in the studied interval, evaluate the depositional & facies controls on shale composition, and provide quantitative mineralogy & bulk chemical properties that may be used for wireline calibration and source rock & reservoir characterization. The research consisted of a basin-scale multidisciplinary study that refines the Cretaceous shale stratigraphy and provides a regional basis for further detailed exploration & exploitation of Colorado Group hydrocarbon & mineral resources. The study integrates geochemical, biofacies, and sedimentological data to identify discrete shale formations within the previously undifferentiated Group. Detailed geochemical and facies analyses provide new information on source-rock distribution and maturity. Results are also presented from pyrolysis & mineralogical studies, paleoenvironmental reconstructions, and identification of diagenetic processes.
