Book Synopsis Paleozoic Stratigraphy and Resources of the Michigan Basin by : G. Michael Grammer
Download or read book Paleozoic Stratigraphy and Resources of the Michigan Basin written by G. Michael Grammer and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2018-04-12 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Michigan Basin is a classic intracratonic basin that has played a significant role in the fundamental understanding of geological processes in such basins, and has been an important resource for oil and gas, economic minerals, groundwater, and coal. Despite the classic nature of the Michigan Basin, there has not been a "special volume" dedicated to the basin in nearly 25 years. Since that time, new advancements in the geological sciences, particularly the utilization of high-resolution sequence stratigraphy and three-dimensional geostatistical modeling, have led to a new and more comprehensive understanding of the Paleozoic sedimentary packages of the Michigan Basin. This volume provides significant new insights of the Michigan Basin to both academic and applied geoscientists; it includes papers that discuss various aspects of the sedimentology and stratigraphy of key units within the basin, as well as papers that analyze the diverse distribution of natural resources present in this basin.

Download or read book The Mineralogy of Michigan written by Eberhardt William Heinrich and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword: Michigan has a long and varied geologic history that includes repeated episodes of volcanism, mountain building, deposition of marine and terrestrial sediments, and glaciations. As a result, we have been endowed with a rich and diverse assemblage of minerals. Appreciation of Michigan's mineral resources began well before the first Europeans set foot here. When Michigan became a state in 1837, one of the first actions of the fledgling legislature was to establish a geological survey of the state, to "furnish a full and scientific description of its rocks, soils, and minerals and provide specimens of the same" Our mineral resources have been studied, categorized, and evaluated for many years, and we continue to learn more about them today. Michigan minerals helped to build the state and nation, and they continue to be an important industrial and commercial resource, a fertile subject for academic study, and a source of fascination and enjoyment for countless hobbyists.

Knox conducted seminal research on the geomorphology of the Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin. His research covered wide-ranging topics such as long-term land-scape evolution in the Driftless Area; responses of floods to climate change since the last glaciation; processes and timing of floodplain sediment deposition on both small streams and on the Mississippi River; impacts of European settlement on the landscape; and responses of stream systems to land-use changes. This volume presents the state of knowledge of the physical geography and geology of this unglaciated region in the otherwise-glaciated Midwest with contributions written by Knox prior to his passing in 2012 and by a number of his former colleagues and graduate students"--
