Book excerpt: We examine the relationship between quality-based manufacturing strategy and the use of different types of performance measures, as well as their separate and joint effects on performance. A key part of our investigation is the distinction between financial and both objective and subjective nonfinancial measures. Our results support the view that performance measurement diversity benefits performance as we find that, regardless of strategy, firms with more extensive performance measurement systems, especially those that include objective and subjective nonfinancial measures, have higher performance. But our findings also partly support the view that the strategy-measurement fit affects performance. We find that firms that emphasize quality in manufacturing use more of both objective and subjective nonfinancial measures. However, there is only a positive effect on performance from pairing a quality-based manufacturing strategy with extensive use of subjective measures, but not with objective nonfinancial measures.

A consequence of such alignment is the tendency for managers to lose sight of the strategic construct(s) the measures are intended to represent, and subsequently act as though the measures are the constructs of interest, a phenomenon referred to as surrogation. We investigate how involvement in strategy selection affects managers' propensity to exhibit surrogation. We predict and find that strategy selection reduces surrogation. Surprisingly, we do not find that engaging in strategy deliberation, a key process underlying strategy selection, reduces surrogation. Thus, managers' involvement in the actual choice of strategy appears to be both a necessary and sufficient condition to mitigate surrogation. Our paper broadens understanding of factors that influence surrogation, such as the effects of different aspects of managers' strategic involvement and buy-in. Further, by documenting how managers behave within (as opposed to simply with) strategic performance measurement systems, we highlight the potential for managers to endogenously influence the effectiveness of such systems.

Book excerpt: Strategy research has long emphasized the need to select performance measures that are appropriate for an organizational context (cf., Hayes & Wheelwright, 1984; Kathuria, 2000; Santos, 2000). On a practical level, however, the evidence and guidelines on what kind of performance metrics a particular type of organization should select and deploy are either lacking or not so explicit. This study attempts to bridge the gap in identifying performance measurement systems, or performance metrics, that measure the right things and are in line with the organizational characteristics (Garengo & Sharma, 2012; Nudurupati et al., 2015). Considering the aforesaid challenges and gap in the literature, we study the relationships between performance metrics and some structural variables, such as the organisation size, nature of the organization (manufacturing or service) and global exposure (multinational or domestic). There are many case studies on this topic, but not enough large empirical studies (Koufteros et al., 2014) such as the present one. Using data from 372 organizations in Italy, this study challenges the notion of universality of performance metrics or 'one size fits all.' Knowing which type of metrics is suitable for their organization, managers can direct resources and effort towards designing and deploying the right type of performance metrics.
