KMUs müssen dabei beachten, dass die Auswahl der erfolgsrelevanten Instrumente und deren aufeinander abgestimmter Einsatz essentiell sind. In der betrieblichen Praxis unterliegen KMUs einer gewissen Ressourcenbeschränkung. Aktuelle Personalmanagement-Themen, wie Employer Branding und Talent- und Retention Management, liefern erfolgsversprechende Ansätze für KMUs zur Sicherung der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und im Kampf um die besten Mitarbeiter. Maßnahmen des Talent- und Retention Managements konnten im betrachteten Unternehmen identifiziert werden. Projektorientierte Unternehmen müssen die Rahmenbedingungen von Projekten beim Personalmanagement berücksichtigen. Ein stärkerer Fokus auf das Personal(entwicklungs)controlling spiegelt sich auch in einer Ausweitung des Planungshorizontes wider. Das strategische Personalmanagement liefert einen Beitrag zum Unternehmenserfolg. In Bezug auf das Personalrisikomanagement sollten sich KMUs vor allem mit der Sicherstellung der Nachbesetzung des Führungspersonals auseinandersetzen. In der Praxis eines mittelständischen Unternehmens konnte in Teilbereichen des strategischen Personalmanagements die Umsetzung entsprechender Maßnahmen identifiziert, jedoch auch Verbesserungspotenzial festgestellt werden.*****This paper deals with the question of whether it makes sense to pursue strategic human resource management in a medium-sized enterprise. Die momentane Situation im Bereich des Personalmanagements wirft demnach eine wichtige Frage auf: Ist es für den Mittelstand eine sinnvolle Idee, dieses wichtige Spezialthema der Personalbeschaffung an externe Dienstleister oder neu gegründete Tochtergesellschaften zu übergeben? So können die Zeiten des „War for Talents“ erfolgreich bestanden werden und man kann gestärkt und mit motivierten, neuen, erfolgsorientierten Mitarbeitern die nächsten Jahre absolvieren mit dem Ziel, die Prozesse und Kundenzufriedenheit zu optimieren. „Verglichen mit aufwändigen Rekrutierungsprozessen in Großunternehmen scheint die Personalauswahl im Mittelstand oft wenig professionell zu verlaufen.“ Kann deshalb eine Auslagerung der Personalauswahl dem Personalmanagement im Mittelstand einen Professionalisierungsschub geben um so den „War for Talents“ zu gewinnen? Wie der Mittelstand diese Fragen beurteilt und einschätzt soll Ziel dieser Studie sein.
