Book excerpt: An Indian author and journalist has been stripped of his Indian citizenship after he wrote an article criticising the regime of the country's prime minister, Narendra Modi. Aatish Taseer, who was born in the UK but raised in India and spent a further decade living there from the age of 25, was stripped of his citizenship of India (OCI) status on 7. November 2019. Taseer, who has written multiple books on India, described the government's move as highly suspicious and systematic. He added: "They are making an example of me and sending a warning message to other journalists..." It should be noted that India has become one of the world's deadliest countries for reporters. Assassinations include journalists who have spoken out against Hindu extremists; as well criticising Hindu nationalism and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Hence the Indian government urgently needs to address violations of press freedom; so that journalists can criticise the dictatorial regime in India without having to fear any retaliation.
Download or read book Holy Hell written by Gail Tredwell and published by . This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amma, universally known as "The Hugging Saint," went through a two-decade transformation from a simple fisherman's daughter to an international wonder worshiped by millions. Gail "Gayatri" Tredwell was there every step of the way--from early devotee to head female disciple, ever-present personal attendant, handmaiden, whipping post, and unwilling keeper of some devastating secrets. Because she became fluent in the Malayalam language and had continual intimate proximity to Amma for twenty years, Tredwell is uniquely capable of portraying this famous woman. She tells her tale with straightforward honesty, fairness, and a dash of Aussie snap and wit. Although the guru's flaws are a necessary part of her story and awakening, she strives to be factual throughout, digging deep to eschew victim frameworks and take responsibility for her own role in accepting the abuse and perpetuating the lies. Tredwell takes us vividly through her varying stages, starting with naïveté and innocent devotion, then on to dawning awareness and confusion, finally to emotional breakdown and her shocking "enlightenment"--her realization that the liberation she urgently required was is in fact liberation from her own guru

The need for meditation thus is more acute. Meditation calms the mind, brings focus and enhances the senses, resulting in a better quality of life and work. Book Synopsis At the Roots of Italian Identity by : Edoardo Marcello Barsotti
Download or read book At the Roots of Italian Identity written by Edoardo Marcello Barsotti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-10 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the relationship between the ideas of nation and race among the nationalist intelligentsia of the Italian Risorgimento and argues that ideas of race played a considerable role in defining Italian national identity. The author argues that the racialization of the Italians dates back to the early Napoleonic age and that naturalistic racialism—or race-thinking based on the taxonomies of the natural history of man—emerged well before the traditionally presumed date of the late 1860s and the advent of positivist anthropology. The book draws upon a wide number of sources including the work of Vincenzo Cuoco, Giuseppe Micali, Adriano Balbi, Alessanro Manzoni, Giandomenico Romagnosi, Cesare Balbo, Vincenzo Gioberti, and Carlo Cattaneo. Themes explored include links to antiquity on the Italian peninsula, archaeology, and race-thinking.

Book Synopsis The Barrio Gangs of San Antonio, 1915-2015 by : Mike Tapia
Download or read book The Barrio Gangs of San Antonio, 1915-2015 written by Mike Tapia and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-22 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barrio Gangs is the most comprehensive academic case study of barrio group dynamics in a major Texas city to date. This is a sociological work on the history of barrio gangs in San Antonio and other large Texas cities to the present day. It examines the century-long evolution of urban barrio subcultures using public archives, oral histories, old photos, and other forms of qualitative data. The study gives special attention to the barrio gangs’ “heyday,” from the 1940s through the 1960s, comparing their attributes to those of modern groups. It illustrates how social and technological changes have affected barrio networking processes and the intensity of the street lifestyle over time. Intergenerational shifts and the tension that accompanies such changes are also central themes in the book. Few other places are so conducive to such historical exploration as is San Antonio. Street ignobility in the barrio no doubt mirrors processes found in other Chicano communities in Texas and the Southwest. The gang contexts in major Chicano population centers have lengthy historical bases rooted in weak opportunity structures, oppression, and discrimination. This work shows that participation in street violence, drug selling, and other parts of the informal economy are functional adaptations to the social structure; the forces propelling the formation of barrio gangs are not temporary social phenomena.
